COLONIAL AMERICA’S REJECTION OF FREE GRACE THEOLOGY L. E. BROWN Prescott, Arizona I. INTRODUCTION Many Free Grace adherents assume that grace theology, the de facto doctrine of the first century church, was lost until recently. Such is not the case. Michael Makidon has demonstrated, for example, that Free Grace views surfaced in Scotland in the 18th century Marrow Contro- versy.1 The “Marrow Men” were clear: faith is the sole condition of justi- fication, and assurance is the essence of justifying faith. Eighty years earlier peace was broken in the Massachusetts Bay Col- ony (MBC) over these doctrines. That upheaval, labeled the “Antinomian Controversy,” occupied the MBC for seventeen months from October 1636 to March 1638. The civil and ecclesiastical trials of Anne Hutchin- son (1591-1643), whose vocal opposition to the “covenant of works”2 gained unfavorable attention from the civil authorities, and served as a beard for theological adversaries John Cotton (1585-1652) and Thomas Shepard (1605-1649). This article will survey the three main interpretations intellectual his- torians offer for the Antinomian Controversy. The primary focus will be on the doctrine of assurance, with an emphasis on sixteenth-century Brit- ish Calvinism. We will evaluate the opposing views of John Cotton and Thomas Shepard. An Interview with Paul M. Smalley about his co-authored book Prepared by Grace, for Grace: The Puritans on God’s Ordinary Way of Leading Sinners to Christ. Grand Rapids: Reformation Heritage Books, 2013, 297 pp., paperback. Interviewed by Brian G. Najapfour Brother, congratulations on your well-researched co-authored book with Dr. Joel Beeke. I am confident that Prepared by Grace, for Grace is destined to be a standard work on the subject. Thank you, Pastor Najapfour. We hope that by God’s grace the book will be useful. Here are some of my questions for you about your book: 1. Could you please briefly define the following terms as used in your book? I think defining these terms will help the readers of this interview better understand your discourse. a. Reformed, Puritan, & evangelical. Reformed refers to the stream of Christianity beginning with sixteenth-century Reformers such as Zwingli and Calvin, and defined by adherence to confessions such as the Heidelberg Catechism and the Westminster Standards. Puritanism was a movement of British Christians from the 1560s through about 1700 that emphasized applying the biblical doctrines rediscovered in the Reformation to one’s personal life, family, church, and nation. The Reformers (including Reformed and Lutheran Christians) called themselves “evangelicals” in the sixteenth century because God has restored to the church the biblical gospel (“evangel”) of salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone according to Scripture alone for the glory of God alone. The term continues to be used today. b. Doctrine of preparation (Is this doctrine biblical? How is it different from the so- called preparationism?) The doctrine of preparation is the idea that God’s general way of bringing sinners to Christ is to awaken them to a sense of their spiritual need before they trust in Christ to save them. -

ROWLAND August 2011 Copyright Gary A. Rowland 2011 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT Historians are divided concerning the ecclesiological thought of seventeenth-century minister John Cotton. Some argue that he supported a church structure based on suppression of lay rights in favor of the clergy, strengthening of synods above the authority of congregations, and increasingly narrow church membership requirements. By contrast, others arrive at virtually opposite conclusions. This thesis evaluates Cotton's correspondence and pamphlets through the lense of moderation to trace the evolution of Cotton's thought on these ecclesiological issues during his ministry in England and Massachusetts. Moderation is discussed in terms of compromise and the abatement of severity in the context of ecclesiastical toleration, the balance between lay and clerical power, and the extent of congregational and synodal authority. -

Anne Hutchinson Claims That God Has Revealed Himself to Her 1637 In Massachusetts Bay, Anne Hutchinson held religious meetings that assaulted the Puritan practice of rele- gating women to the role of “man’s helper.” At the same time, her ideas promoted the importance of individ- ual conscience, none more so than when, on trial for her beliefs, she declared that she alone could determine whether God had entered her soul. Anne Hutchinson was born Anne Marbury in 1591 in Alford, Lincolnshire, England to Bridget Dryden and Francis Marbury, a dissenting Anglican clergyman. Exposed to theology at an early age, she became conversant in the ongoing turmoil between the Church of England, also called the Anglican church, and the Puritans, who thought the Anglicans morally corrupt and spiritually bankrupt. In the years after she married William Hutchinson, a merchant, in 1612, Anne Hutchinson gravitated toward the preaching of John Cotton, a Puritan. When Cotton immigrated to Massachusetts Bay in 1633, she convinced her husband they should do likewise, and in 1634 the couple, along with several of their children (she had 13 altogether), journeyed across the Atlantic. Because William Hutchinson was wealthy and prominent, he received a large plot of land in Boston for his family’s house, a practice in keeping with a complex distribution system in which the amount of land a Puritan received was related, in part, to his standing in society. -

It argues that antinomians, by rejecting traditional concepts of social authority, created divisive political factions within the godly party while it waged war against King Charles I. At the same time in New England, antinomians organized a political movement that called for a democratic commonwealth to limit the power of ministers and magistrates in religious and civil affairs. When this program collapsed in Massachusetts, hundreds of colonists returned to an Old England engulfed by civil war. Joining English antinomians, they became lay preachers in London, New Model Army soldiers, and influential supporters of the republican Levellers. This dissertation also connects the study of republican political thought to the labor history of the first British Empire.
