FOLLOW US ON FACEBOOK www.MontebelloReporter.com VOL. 6 NO.6 JUNE 2020 CHALK-FOR-A-CAUSE TO BENEFIT MONTEBELLO COMMERCE YMCA The community was invited to be colorful and creative alongside The Shops at Montebello and The City of Montebello to add color to the parking lot and leave messages of hope and positivity during the Montebello #ChalkWalk. The #ChalkWalk was a fundraiser for Montebello-Commerce YMCA to support their community programs that continue to make an impact.

The event was held May 22 and 23 with the registration fee going to help the Montebello-Commerce YMCA. With a donation of $30, the chalk artists were assigned a parking space to design, a specific date/time, a bucket of chalk and a roll of painter’s tape. Chalk artists included residents, business owners, community leaders and all five members of the Montebello City Council.

“Thank you once again to our wonderful community, to our enthusiastic volunteers, and to all the chalk artists for supporting the Chalk Walk for a Cause at The Shops at Montebello on May 22nd & 23rd, with proceeds help- ing the YMCA’s COVID-19 emergency relief efforts including our “Grab & Go” meals,” said Paul S. Parzik, Executive Director of Montebello-Commerce YMCA. “It was wonderful to see folks from many of our partners including City of Montebello Recreation & Community Services and our City Council members, Beverly Hospital, Montebello Reporter, Mexican American Oppor- tunity Foundation (MAOF), and Tobacco Free Partnership, Montebello, as well as Y Board members and staff volunteering their time too!! This year especially, Beverly Hospital thanked and celebrated our health care heroes for their courage and selflessness especially during this battle against COVID-19.

From nurses and doctors to environmental and nutritional services staff, all of the team members have been essential in this fight. Beverly Hospital could not successfully serve their patients in their time of need without these dedicated professionals. Lives are being saved because of the commitment and compassion they bring in to work every day. This pandemic has presented many new challenges in the health care setting. However, hospital team members continue to find ways to overcome these barriers and provide patients with the best overall care possible.

MONTEBELLO REPORTER JUNE 2020 Community 5 LOCAL ATTORNEY HELPS FAMILY IN NEED DURING COVID-19 CRISIS By Anne Donofrio-Holter Contributing Writer

With so many struggling during this challenging time, when Montebello attorney George Pacheco learned of a family that needed assistance, he wanted to help.

“We learned of the family’s circumstances when a social worker from my daughter’s school referred the family to the Montebello Rotary Club,” said Pacheco. “How- ever, the Club had no funds to help out, so my wife Liz and I decided to step in.”

According to Pacheco, although struggling, the family had been able to make ends meet until the Covid-19 virus hit.

“The mom lost her job and suddenly the family found themselves in a financial crisis,” said Pacheco. “There are three teenaged children in the family. The middle daughter works, but only part time with limited income.”

Pacheco and his wife accompanied the family to Costco where they were able to stock up on paper goods and toiletries.

Pacheco insisted they also get food and other essentials.

“It was our privilege to help this family during these trying times,” added Pacheco. “It’s our way of giving back to a community that has been good to us.”

The family expressed their deep appreciation to the Pacheco’s for their act of kindness and generosity.

The family also received gas money donated by local businessman Robert Tapia.

MONTEBELLO REPORTER JUNE 2020 Community 9 LONG TIME MONTEBELLO RESIDENT CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY QUARANTINE STYLE Elizabeth “Liz” Barron celebrated her 80th birthday Quarantine Style on April 29 with a drive-by parade that included about 20 vehicles filled with family and friends, a Montebello Fire Truck, several Montebello Police Units and even a representative from the neighboring city of Pico Rivera.

Liz and her husband, Ernest, have been Montebello residents since 1967 and are retired from their careers as a coffee packer and upholsterer. All five of their now grown children graduated from Montebello High School. But that isn’t their only tie to the City. Sons, Danny, Ernie, and son-in-law, Brian Bart, were career officers of Montebello Police Department and over the years many of their fellow officers were fed a working holiday dinner at their modest home in South Monte- bello. Little brother, Paul Barron, is a Sergeant with the LAUSD Police Department.

Daughter, Sylvia said, “We tried to surprise Mom with the drive-by, but she caught us taking her balloons outside. As kids we could never get away with any- thing and that’s still true today.”

As the school year comes to an end, the class of 2020 will soon become graduates and enter adulthood.

With advanced placement exams completed and courses coming to an end, seniors turn in their final assignments for a cap and gown.

All local Montebello High School, have been going out of their way to express how proud they are of their senior class. From having lawn signs personally delivered to getting banners hung around our community, us seniors appreciate how much effort our schools are going through only to make our last moments of high school memorable.

Although our at-home school sessions took a bit of time to adjust to, students made the most of it. We appreciate having supportive teachers that are willing to be there for us, especially during this time of need.

Even though everyone understands the importance of this quarantine, we do miss seeing our friends at school every day and sharing conversations with our favorite teachers. We wish we could have spent our last moments of high school laughing in our classrooms but are trying to make the most of what we have.

At Schurr High School, the AVID program encouraged everyone to think of creative ways to share where they committed to in the fall. Something as small as this helps keep us motivated and reminds us that we are all going through this situation together.

If you know a high school or college senior, take time out of your day to remind them that everything they did in their educational career, such as extracurriculars and high-level classes, are an accomplishment that they should be proud of, regardless of the situation we are currently going through.

As part of the class of 2020, I would like to say thank you to my family and friends that have supported me through high school. Thank you for encouraging me to join colorguard and to write for this newspaper. These are some of the best decisions I have made throughout my high school experience.

LEBOW @ RELIANT URGENT CARE In the age of COVID- 19 there are now vital new health rules necessary to host a successful Summer BBQ. Do not cross contaminate cooked prepared food with raw meat or fish, keep in separate containers. 13. Kitchen knives and sharp cooking implements are a frequent source of serious injury, make sure they are in a safe place away from children. 14. BBQ’s can be the source of severe burns, make sure your BBQ is well maintained and that children are kept away from it. 15. Do not leave food in the sun or a very warm place such as mayonnaise, potato salad, dairy and even rice as these can quickly build bacteria and could get you very sick. Keep food cool. 16. Isaac has achieved some fine accomplishments during his years at Schurr. He has become a life member in the California Scholarship Federation club, (CSF) ,while maintaining perfect atten- dance.

He was presented with a Track & Field Coach award. Also was presented a Nerds Award from Chick Fil-A for his high grades. Then, too, an Outstanding Service Award from his Church, GCC, Grace Community Church.

This can be very stressful to the mind and to the body. That is why it is very important to set aside time to reflect, release, and distress. Some ways that you can do that are through:

MONTEBELLO REPORTER 30 Community JUNE 2020 CHEVROLET OF MONTEBELLO GIVES BACK TO THE COMMUNITY AND RECEIVES HIGH MARKS In April, Chevy of Montebello celebrated its 10-year anniversary and had plans to close the dealership down for the day and take the entire staff and their families to Knotts Berry Farm for a celebration. But because of the COVID-19 virus, all plans had to be canceled. Instead owner Chris Teagues along with General Manager Peter Fice organized a BBQ luncheon for Montebello Firefighters and Police to thank them for all their hard work and sacrifice during these difficult times.
