Brasil, 4365, CEP 21045-900, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil, e-mail: [email protected] Received April 5, 2002 – Accepted January 21, 2003 – Distributed February 29, 2004 (With 5 figures) ABSTRACT The ultrastructure of the body tegument of Metamicrocotyla macracantha (Alexander, 1954) Koratha, 1955, parasite of Mugil liza from Brazil, was studied by transmission electron microscopy. The body tegument is composed of an external syncytial layer, musculature, and an inner layer containing tegu- mental cells. The syncytium consists of a matrix containing three types of body inclusions and mi- tochondria. The musculature is constituted of several layers of longitudinal and circular muscle fi- bers. The tegumental cells present a well-developed nucleus, cytoplasm filled with ribosomes, rough endoplasmatic reticulum and mitochondria, and characteristic organelles of tegumental cells. RESUMO Ultra-estrutura do tegumento de Metamicrocotyla macracantha (Alexandre, 1954) Koratha, 1955 (Monogenea, Microcotylidae) Foi realizado o estudo do tegumento do corpo de Metamicrocotyla macracantha (Alexander, 1954) Koratha, 1955, parasito de Mugil liza (tainha) do Canal de Marapendi, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, pela microscopia eletrônica de transmissão. O tegumento é formado por uma camada externa sincicial, uma camada muscular e uma camada interna contendo células tegumentares. -

It acquaints someone involved in rearing mullets with problems he can face and topics he should investigate. We cannot go into extensive illustrative detail on every species or group, but do provide a listing ofmost parasites reported or known from mullet and sorne pertinent general information on them. Because of these enumerations, the paper should also act as a review for anyone interested in mullet parasites or the use of such parasites as indicators about a mullet's diet and migratory behaviour. -

We report the presence of L. mediterraneus from both the Mediterranean and Atlantic coast and L. cephali and L. maroccanus sp. n. from the Atlantic coast only. the latter species, which is described herein as new, resembles L. guanduensis but differs from this species mainly in having a shorter penis compared to the accessory piece, a proportionally longer extremity of the accessory piece and a less developed heel. the utility of Ligophorus spp. as markers of cryptic species of the complex M. cephalus is discussed in the context of species diversity and geographical distribution of these monogeneans on this host around the world. -

Turkish Journal of Zoology Turk J Zool (2014) 38: 698-722 http://journals.tubitak.gov.tr/zoology/ © TÜBİTAK Review Article doi:10.3906/zoo-1405-70 Checklist of the phyla Platyhelminthes, Xenacoelomorpha, Nematoda, Acanthocephala, Myxozoa, Tardigrada, Cephalorhyncha, Nemertea, Echiura, Brachiopoda, Phoronida, Chaetognatha, and Chordata (Tunicata, Cephalochordata, and Hemichordata) from the coasts of Turkey Melih Ertan ÇINAR* Department of Hydrobiology, Faculty of Fisheries, Ege University, Bornova, İzmir, Turkey Received: 28.05.2014 Accepted: 28.06.2014 Published Online: 10.11.2014 Printed: 28.11.2014 Abstract: In this paper, the current status of the species diversity of 13 phyla, namely Platyhelminthes, Xenacoelomorpha, Nematoda, Acanthocephala, Myxozoa, Tardigrada, Cephalorhyncha, Nemertea, Echiura, Brachiopoda, Phoronida, Chaetognatha, and Chordata (invertebrates, only Tunicata, Cephalochordata, and Hemichordata) along the coasts of Turkey is reviewed. Platyhelminthes was represented by 186 species, Chordata by 64 species, Nemertea by 26 species, Nematoda by 20 species, Xenacoelomorpha by 11 species, Chaetognatha by 10 species, Acanthocephala by 9 species, Brachiopoda and Phoronida by 4 species, Myxozoa and Tradigrada by 2 species, and Cephalorhyncha and Echiura by 1 species. Two platyhelminth (Planocera cf. graffi and Prostheceraeus vittatus), 2 nemertean (Drepanogigas albolineatus and Tubulanus superbus), 1 phoronid (Phoronis australis), and 2 ascidian (Polyclinella azemai and Ciona roulei) species are being newly reported for the first time from the coasts of Turkey. Four tunicate (Symplegma brakenhielmi, Microcosmus exasperatus, Herdmania momus, and Phallusia nigra) and 1 chaetognath (Ferosagitta galerita) species were classified as alien species in the region. Among the fish species present in the Tramandaí-Armazem lagoon system on the north coast of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, members of the Mugilidae are prominent and econom- ically important. This study evaluated the occurrence of ectoparasites on mullet Mugil liza caught in shallow nearshore waters in Tramandaí lagoon and the channel connecting the estuary to the sea. From January to May 2010, 63 individuals of M. liza were acquired from artisanal fishermen and the ectoparasites were observed and identified. Forty-seven fishes (74.6%) showed the following ectoparasites: 32 (68%) Ergasilus (Copepoda: Ergasilidae), 5 (11%) Gy- rodactylus (Monogenea: Gyrodactylidae), 2 (4%) Metamicrocotyla (Monogenea: Metamicro- cotylidae), 2 (4%) Caligus (Copepoda: Caligidae) on the gills; two (4%) Mollusca larvae (glochidia) and 7 (15%) metacercariae of digenetic trematodes adhered to the tegument. The preferred site of fixation was the gills.
