Ea<:h Handbook contained a general account of the district and its people, census tables and statistics on the area, houses, population, general amenities alld distribution of population by livelihood clas8cs for each village and town. The 1961 District Census Handbooks were a distinct improvement on the 1951 volume~. A uniform proce;inrc was adopted for the preparation of the Handbooks. Each Handbook contain~d three parl~ as del-ailed below: Part A. General, dealing with a general introduction about thl" district, its progress on various fields of general amenities since 1951 and an analysis of popu latioll by various demo graphic characterhtics. Part B. CF-llSUS data, dealiug with the Census Tables of1961 pertaining to the district, Part C. ViHageiTown Directory, dealing with the amellitiC'-<, Primary Census Abstract down to the level of karas/murisjdesoms in the case of rural areas and hlocks and wards in the case of urban areas and numher of industrial establishments by type. District and taluk maps were also incorporated in each District CCllSll'i Handbook. In 1971 also it has been decided to adopt more or less the ::lame paltt'l'n and publish th~ District Census Handbooks in three parts as given below: Part A. Town and Village Directory Part B. Village and Town Primary Ccn"us Abstract Part C. Administrative Statistics and Report It is proposed to print and publish Parts A and B relating to a district in it single volume with a view to making it available to the public as soon as the inf,Jrmation is 'collected and compiled. Part C win be printed as a separate volume. The collectiou and compilation of data for Part A W<::l'C uone by the OIIice of the Director of Census Operations, Kerala throu,!!h specially designed schedules for villages and tOWllS. The information on rural areas was furnished by the Tahsildars and on the urban areas by the concerned Municipal/Corporation Commissioners. 'Vhile Part B of the Handbook presents the . Village and Town Primary Census .t\bstract, Part C gives the Repon aud Administrative Statistics processed from information l'e>llected from the various Central and State Govern ment Offices, A special feature of the publication of the Handbook ill 1971 is the presentation of Primary Census Abstract not only for villages but also for the panchayats. This is the first time that an attempt has been made to present panchayat-wise figure~. The additional work involved in the new venture is more than justified in view of the growing importance of panchayats in administration. On the recommendation of Registrar General, India, lhe Government of Kerala have agreed to bring out these volumes as State Government publications and issued ordero; in G.O. MS. No. 199j70/PD., dated 17th June 1970. The printing of the Handbooks was under taken by the Superintendent of Government Presses, Trivandrum. It is not possible to have compiled a book of this kind without the co-operation and goodwill -extended by the various State and Central Government Offices. I am grateful tn them for their co-operation.. The District Census Handbook section of my office functioned under the direct control of Shri B. T. Pillai, Deputy Director of Census Operations (Tabulation) and he was assisted by a Tahulatinn Officer and necessary 'ltaff. Shri S. Ja~'ashank('1' was the Tabulation Officer in charge of the section at the time of addJ'cssing the various departments for collection of information. At the time of compilation or the District Census Handbook Smt. C. Kamalam took charge as the Tabulation Officer. I feel very happy in acknowledging thl' valuable contri~ butions maue hy these officers and other members of the staff in my office, especially SUlt. K. Sulabhamm:\, Statistical Assistant and Shri G. Krishna l\:loorthy, Computor and Shri G. Siyadasan ; IneI Smt. P. Kanakavally, .\ssistant Compilers in the compilation of this important wnrk. The entire typing work was done by Shri '!\L Krishnan and Smt. S. Salaswathy .\mrna, Typists of this office. Sarvashri K. Kl'i<;hna Pillai and M.
