Russell Thorndyke : Doctor Syn: A Smuggler Tale of the Romney Marsh before purchasing it in order to gage whether or not it would be worth my time, and all praised Doctor Syn: A Smuggler Tale of the Romney Marsh:

More importantly he offers us very strong questions about morality and the poor. He introduces us to poor who will not take poverty lying down. He introduces us to a church leader who, while taking Christ's lessons literally, has a very broad method of interpreting them. These are adventure stories and can be enjoyed as such. But if you like to have your understanding of right and wrong challenged, if you like your characters in shade of gray rather than black and white, these are thinking people's adventure stories. No one here is exactly who they first seem to be.Thorndyke's writing is beautiful and skillfully crafted. He writes like a fine illustrator draws and he brings the coast of England and its marshes alive. After reading a couple of these tales you'll want to see the places he writes about for yourself.Suspenseful, exciting, not inappropriate for children but be prepared for some questions that may not be easy to answer.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful World of the ScarecrowBy Jimmy Lee B.This book, although first from a publication perspective, is really the last of the 's adventures. Perhaps it sets the stage for the retrospective books to follow, but I would have preferred to read it last, myself, assuming I can find all the other books in the series.I think most readers who pick up Thorndyke's tales are familiar with the Scarecrow, thanks to the Disney two- or three- parter we all adored in the 1960's. Of all Thorndyke's tales, this is the closest to that Disney tale: the king's men have come to Romney Marsh to search for smugglers. They are greeted by the local minister, as well as various local characters and the magistrate. A number of tales are told to the searchers; unusual happenings occur - and a famous pirate, long thought dead, seems to be alive. The Sabatini-like prose isn't fast moving, but the book nonetheless offers a plot twist or two. The Disney team took their liberties (there's an impossible-to-find screen2print book from that effort in addition to the more straightforward Vic Crume book) to tighten up the story and make it work within the limitations of the Wonderful World of Color. So when you do pick this original up, there are a few surprises and it's worth persevering. On its own, this is an incredibly creative story, and, if I wasn't familiar with the characters, no doubt a bit frightening. You can see what inspired the Disney team. It's a pity they didn't embark (forgive the pun) on producing a few more adventures.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The end is the beginningBy MoserGrayIf you loved the Disney show, "The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh", then you might be interested in this book as this is the tome that inspired that tale. The similarities are few I'm afraid, The Scarecrow doesn't show up until near the end of the book and he doesn't do that much. Curiously, this book takes place at the end of the Scarecrow's reign as Vicar Synn is presented much older, although it is the first in the series of book featuring the character; later volumes would serve to flesh out The Scarecrow's surprisingly complex back story.

First in the series of Doctor Syn novels, in which we are introduced to the complex Christopher Syn, the kindly vicar of the little town of . Syn seems pleasant, but we soon learn that he has a sinister past. At one time he was the vicious pirate Captain Clegg and he is also the mysterious "Scarecrow of Romney Marsh", masked leader of the local smugglers.
