The Cowdray Health Centre Project Report

Charity No: 1036432

Forward

- In 1996 The Merton Park Unit first went to Mbaraka- Chembe (coast region north of Mombasa, near Malindi), and constructed a five-room building, to be used as a clinic. - In 1999, the unit again raised money to build a two- roomed doctor’s house, with a covered cooking area so that a doctor could be on site 24/7. - In 2002, money was raised to build a ward/maternity unit (as per Malindi Health Authority regulations). - In 2005, the unit installed a water tank, on a 10ft tower, wash-hand basins, which were then connected to the ‘mains’ water supply. - In 2009 saw the modification of the original clinic building to conform to Malindi Health regulations. A shower was also installed in the post natal room in the building, which necessitated the water tank to be higher.

Over the life of the project, Scouts from the UK have lived and worked with both Kenyan Navy Scouts and those from Mbaraka Chembe village. Thus demonstrating the positive impact that young people can have.

And so, to the 2011 project......

I would like to thank everyone who has made donations and has sponsored us, one way or another with our projects.

2011 saw the installation of electricity to all three buildings.

The construction of a boundary fence

A Ladies and Gents toilet, plus a patients toilet inside the ward/maternity block

All three buildings painted inside and out.

NB. The project site which has developed over the last 15yrs is a local community project, owned by the community, and run by an elected committee, for the benefit of the community.

With all the projects, UK Explorer Scouts have worked as a team with Kenyan Navy Scouts.

Some of the Explorer Scouts thoughts and pictures

This has been a great experience, working with the Kenyans and interacting with them has been amazing.

Working with the Kenyan Navy Scouts opened my eyes to a world that I was sealed from in my ignorance.

All in all Kenya 2011 has been one of the best ‘Holidays’ in my life and I would love to do it again.

All things considered, there’s probably not a greater bunch of people to take a trip with, you guys and gals are legends.

I made new friends, from both the English and Kenyan Scouts, and helped do something special for a special community.

Saying goodbye to the Kenyan Navy Scouts was hard as all were great friends, they will never be forgotten.
