INTRODUCTION

A basic guide to hopefully provide a platform for staff members to be able to find suitable activities available for their clients. Please note this is a guide and things are subject to change so please check before presenting before a panel. Activities are to help clients towards independence and promote wellbeing in accordance to the relevant legal acts.

Please note most activities are for adults. Please use the information you know about the client to make decisions on what is appropriate and what level of support would be needed to enable the client to make use of what is available. Please consult the GP to make sure it is safe for the client to physically take part in activities (particularly if they have a health condition).

Most activities require some for of registration unless otherwise stated. Please make contact with provider before making arrangements.

ABOUT ACTION SPACE ActionSpace was launched in the 1960s and established as an independent charity in 1984.

Our status as a sector leader within the UK has been recognised by Arts Council in their 2015-18 National Portfolio Organisation (NPO) funding round, where we were one of only 68 organisations across all of England to be awarded a significant uplift in funding.

Our work with high profile cultural organisations such as the Royal Academy, Camden Arts Centre, the Museum of Everything, Outside In/Pallant House Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery has helped to establish a place for artists with learning disabilities in the contemporary arts sector.

We aim to make a professional career in the arts a realistic option for artists with learning disabilities who have the talent and ambition to pursue this.

ABOUT US We specialise in a variety of art forms: drawing, painting, sculpture, performance, writing, video and music. We teach computer skills and use the symbol generating software Symwriter to help our group members read for themselves – an exceptionally empowering tool.

Interacting with the local community is an essential part of our service. We visit local amenities: the cafes, shops, the park, sports facilities and public transport. We regularly make trips to see the latest art exhibitions, museum shows, theatre productions or to visit places of interest. All of these experiences are reviewed in our blog and reflected in the artwork the group produces.

Our work and films are exhibited regularly both at Cambridge House and local galleries and cinemas. Each year we stage a spectacular show at Cambridge House, open to the general public, devised and performed by the group which celebrates and showcases the uniqueness of our members. This is a very important time for the group in terms of self-esteem and confidence, and is always the subject of much future discussion.

Over the years we have created books and run workshops demonstrating innovative practice working with learning diverse groups – the books are used all over the world by schools and community groups. Our emphasis is on ensuring that the adults we work with are encouraged to see themselves and are seen by the public as a positive vital force in the community.

Have a look at The 19Plus Blog to learn more about the project and to see some of the art work the group have produced.

The group meet every Monday and Tuesday during term time, from 10:30am to 3:30pm. Currently we have 12 adults in the team with 4 artist-support workers and 2 volunteers.

CERTITUDE MY HOLIDAYS

CONTACT 0208 772 6218 [email protected]

ABOUT US

We pride ourselves on the strong relationships we have developed with a large number of famous and well regarded organisations such as The Tate, The Young Vic and The Brit School to co-produce the most innovative, exciting and engaging activities and courses for everyone who takes part. Our courses are held in community-based venues where possible.

Courses so far include themes such as Active Lifestyle, Arts and Crafts, Performing Arts, and Print and Textiles – all of which steered participants to a final exhibition, performance or celebration. For example, the Performing Arts course concluded with a joint performance with students for The Brit School, and the end of the Arts and Crafts course was celebrated with a gallery exhibition of the fine work that had been produced, some of which was eventually sold. We are already designing new and exciting courses based on the feedback and requests we have received.

CERTITUDE TRAVEL BUDDY Support is tailored to the needs of the individual and is designed to keep people safe while encouraging independence. We are looking to extend this service and would be interested to hear from you if you would like to be a travel buddy. We are particularly interested in applicants with learning disabilities who could provide peer support.

This service is available in: Wandsworth and Richmond but we may be able to provide this service elsewhere if requested.

Our seasonal menu changes every few months, and every day you can find an exciting array of specials depending on what’s available and at its tastiest. We think fresh is best, so our chefs make every dish from scratch.

We’re also committed to sourcing our ingredients locally. If you just fancy a nibble, our bar serves home made bar snacks, charcuterie from Cannon and Cannon, UK cheeses from and hand-made cakes. For those with larger appetites, our main menu includes hot dogs, super seasonal veg, and meats from local butcher W Bunting in Peckham Rye as well as our lovely neighbours William Rose Butchers.

Dishes, teas and cocktails are all seasoned using herbs grown on our very own roof garden. As we move into spring, you may find yourself relaxing in our courtyard garden and looking up to catch our chefs cultivating these herbs. Our focus is on British, mostly native species, but we’ll be trying some new esoteric varieties too.

We’re keen to be a community space, catering for everyone. We welcome families and our children’s menu features firm favourites alongside weekend specials. We serve everything from light bites and gourmet popcorn munchies to main meals. So pop in for a drink and a snack, a light lunch, or a full spread followed by a film. Whatever you have, we promise it will be fresh, well-seasoned, beautiful and it won't break the bank; especially with 10% off for all our members.

ABOUT US

(During sailing hrs - Wednesday/Thursday/Sunday 10am - 4pm)

MEMBERSHIP Membership costs £1/year for all volunteers and sailors. Volunteers come along and help out with the day-to- day running of the charity and take our participants out sailing. Many volunteers use this route to learn to sail. Have a look at the Volunteering page for more information. We aim to get you out on the water on your own as soon as possible - and will assess what you have learnt - soon you will be taking others out for a sail and sharing your knowledge. Or you can help in the clubhouse, sailing compound or with our administration; there is always lots to do.

REGISTRATION We need to have some essential information on all our volunteers, sailors and any carers who wish to sail, before you go sailing. You can provide us with this information online using this link: Tideway online registration system which will save time when you first visit us.

SAILING FEES If you want to sail on your own or as an assisted sailor (but not as a volunteer), you will need to pay a sailing fee of £10 for every sailing session (half day) (adult) or £5 (young person).

If you want to sail regularly you may wish to pay one of the following annual fees with reduced session fees:

Adults can either pay £60 for the year plus £5 for each sailing session, or £110 for the year with no further sailing fees.

Young person (young people ages 6-17) can pay £55 for the year with no further sailing fees. Parents/Guardians are asked to act as volunteers on behalf of junior members.

Version 1.4 PAID ACTIVITIES / Tideaway Sailing

ON THE DOCK

We are based on a kilometre long dock, one of the few remaining parts of the old Surrey Docks in Rotherhithe. With views across the river to Canary Wharf, it is a peaceful oasis in the heart of the city. The Dock is a haven for wildlife; the Great Crested Grebes are a favourite sighting.

The waters are generally sheltered and the Dock walls mean you can’t get lost. We provide qualified safety boat cover at all times. Access to the water is via a gentle ramp and stable pontoons. We have hoists for those who need them.

Enjoying the peaceful atmosphere, trying to outsail other boats, improving your skills with help from our safety boat crew, the Dock is your sailing playground.

RACING

On Sundays we organise informal racing for those that want it; a great way to sharpen your skills. We can teach you the racing basics to allow you to take part in your first race, and then gradually learn the skills and tactics. Races are short (typically 20 mins) with 2 or 3 in a session giving the opportunity to learn rapidly from your mistakes and see how you improve.

Our sailors are regular visitors at race regattas around the country. We have trailers to take our boats, or you can sometimes arrange to borrow a boat from the host club. One of our sailors is the current world champion in the Hansa Liberty servo class.

AWAY TRIPS

We want our sailors and volunteers to extend their sailing skills with trips to other venues.

Our Hawk dayboats are perfect for open water day sails. With a comfortable cockpit for 4 or 5 adults, simple rig that is big enough to sail even when winds are light, but easy to reef (reduce) when the wind increases, and an engine to get you home on time.

We take the two Hawks (by road) to the River Medway in Kent for day sails and racing along this river full of wildlife; sharp eyes can spot Little Egrets and Avocets and you can hardly miss the Oystercatchers and black headed gulls.

We organise a longer weekend cruise on the south coast or east coast, perhaps in company with other Hawks. Staying in B&Bs, the trip is a proper adventure with a sense of reaching a destination. Reading charts, understanding the tides, planning the day and entering a new harbour are all skills you can develop or refresh, with the prospect of a jolly evening out with friends.

A weekend with the dinghies and instructors at UKSA in Cowes is another popular trip. Each October Tideway members arrange a weekend trip to the UKSA (UK Sailing Academy) in Cowes on the Isle of Wight, the world centre of sailing. This gives us all an opportunity to sail in dinghies in the relatively sheltered waters of the Solent and throw off the shackles of Greenland Dock.

A wide range of boats is made available from Lasers to Dart catamarans and the sessions on the water provide the perfect opportunity to develop sailing skills. There is a modest charge to cover the weekend which includes all accommodation and food as well as instructors, wetsuits and the ferry crossing. The only requirement is for sailing ability to be equivalent to RYA2.

43 | Page

Version 1.4 PAID ACTIVITIES / Tideaway Sailing

THAMES

The Thames is on our doorstep. The Hawks are perfect for river trips. A short evening sail up to Tower Bridge makes a lovely first step into open water; see the City from a new angle and at a speed which allows you take it all in, then see it again on the way back.

For a longer day we sail down to Erith on the ebb tide and return on the flood, passing through the Thames Barrier.

TRAINING

We have volunteers who are qualified powerboat, dinghy and keelboat instructors who want to develop the skills of other volunteers and sailors. We need sailors with PowerBoat and RYA safety boat qualifications to support our activities every day, as well as dinghy and keelboat sailors ensuring that the Hawks have competent helms and crew. We also encourage everyone to improve their skills by completing RYA courses. We run regular sessions on the RYA syllabus and use the staff of the Surrey Docks Watersports Centre to provide an end of course assessment. For those wanting a more intensive course, Surrey Docks Watersports Centre provide a comprehensive range over the year.

ABOUT US Speaking Up Southwark is an advocacy group for people with a learning disability. An advocacy group speaks up for people so that their rights and wishes are respected. Apart from the group helper (or facilitator) all members of Speaking Up Southwark have a learning disability.

The group members visit people with a learning disability in their settings (like their day centres) to find out what they think about services like housing and job services. Speaking Up Southwark members will also hold big meetings called forums every three months to talk about subjects that matter to people with a learning disability.

At a meeting called the Learning Disability Partnership Board, Speaking Up Southwark then tells important people who make big decisions what the learning disability community thinks about issues.

THE STEPPING STONES PROJECT GATEWAY CLUB

CONTACT St Faith’s Community Centre Red Post Hill London SE24 9JQ 07950 612 914

TRANSPORT • Train North Dulwich • Buses P4

ABOUT US

From our base at St Faith’s Community Centre in Herne Hill, we operate a weekly programme of activities and classes. Stepping Stones was established in 1997 in response to a lack of provision for activities for adults with learning disabilities in the local area. Originally operating as part of St Faith’s Youth and Community Centre, we became an independent and registered charity in 2005. Today, we remain closely linked, and enjoy and benefit from our placement in the middle of a multi purpose community centre.

The majority of adults who come to Stepping Stones have moderate and severe disabilities, and many are accompanied by their carers and support workers through out the session. We aim to provide activities which can broaden the horizons of people who can so easily be overlooked by society. We know that everyone has talents to share, confidence to gain and joy to be had.

In addition to our activities at St Faith’s, we also work in partnership with other organisations and deliver off site classes in a number of venues.

We have 8 classes per week at our centre in Herne Hill. Each class is led by an experienced tutor, and some of our busier classes are also supported by support workers and volunteers. In our classes you can:

LEARN NEW SKILLS Get fitter and healthier Make friends and enjoy being part of a group

We have 3 terms per year, each for 10 weeks at a time with a half term break in the middle.

During the weekend in the spring and summer we run a project at a local allotment, and we also organise walking trips in and around London.

A regular friendly telephone call offers an opportunity for a chat, advice, help and companionship over the phone. Calls are made at a mutually convenient prearranged time. We aim to call each service user once a fortnight. An average call lasts for around 20 minutes. We are also able to make referrals to social service/sensory teams and other organisations or charities that may also be helpful

RADIOS AND AUDIO EQUIPMENT

Listening to radio programmes, recorded music, talking books and podcasts make a huge difference to the lives of blind and partially sighted people, especially those who live alone.

We act as agents for British Wireless for the Blind and in partnership with them, we can provide a radio/audio set on long term loan to any blind or partially sighted person who cannot afford to purchase their own equipment.

Radios and audio sets are specially designed with high contrast and simple to use controls.

Our staff will help you to choose the right radio or audio set and we will deliver the equipment to you and explain how to use it.

WELFARE RIGHTS SERVICE Many blind or partially sighted people live on low incomes, and therefore it is essential that they claim their full benefit entitlement. In our experience many people do not claim all the benefits that they are entitled to. BlindAids’

Welfare Rights Service offers a free benefits assessment for people who are: • Blind or partially sighted, possibly coping with other disabilities as well • A recipient of the BlindAid home visiting service • Financially disadvantaged – leading to poor quality of life • Have restricted mobility – unable to seek or take advice outside the home • Limited communication ability – unable to seek or take advice by telephone. We can offer advice by telephone or in the comfort and security of your own home if you would prefer.

CHOICE SUPPORT

Choice Support 100 Westminster Bridge Road London SE1 7XA

ABOUT US We provide flexible services to the meet the demands of people wanting support tailored to their individual needs. Our services are run by experienced and dedicated managers based at our regional offices. We aim to provide services to enable everyone we support to have lives that are full, healthy and meaningful.

WHO CAN COMMISSION A SERVICE FROM CHOICE SUPPORT? We welcome families and disabled people contacting us directly as the commissioners of the support that we provide. Choice Support has the expertise to support a wide range of people. We have created a families team to ensure that Choice Support is responsive to peoples’ needs and capable of flourishing in the on-going challenging economic environment. Find out more about our work with families or watch this video about Olivia and her mother.

TYPES OF SERVICE WE CAN OFFER Our staff help people and their families to develop their own support package from as little as one hour to 24 hours a day and this ensures we are able to meet the needs of each person we support. People can choose which staff regularly support them and can change the time of their support whenever they want to. Here is a list of the types of traditional services we are registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to offer:

• Supported living is where people live in their own home and receive the support they need to live there. • Outreach is supporting people for a part of their time to do specific things, such as going shopping, attending college or managing money. • Shared lives is where a person who wants support is matched with a shared lives carer, and shares that person's family life. • Positive behavioural support is specialist support for people whose behaviours can challenge and for people on the autistic spectrum.

Our other specialist services • Quality Checkers - we can offer training to set up your own Quality Checkers team.

SUPPORTED LIVING Supported living is where people are tenants in their own home, and receive the support they need to live there. We support many people in this way. In supported living housing and support are usually organised

68 | Page

Version 1.4 SERVICES AND ADVICE / Choice support

separately, which means that people have proper tenancy agreements with their landlords. People also have more money than if they lived in residential care services, because they are eligible for more benefits.

OUTREACH Outreach is the term we use when we support people for a part of their time to do specific things, such as help with personal care, going shopping, attending college, using public transport or managing money. This might be for a few hours a week, or much more. Often, people who receive outreach support live on their own, or with families or partners. This type of support is also sometimes called domiciliary care.

SHARED LIVES Shared lives is the new name for adult family placements. The idea is that people needing support are matched with a shared lives carer and share that person's family life. Shared lives arrangements are very cost effective and flexible. If someone is getting a shared lives service they may actually live with the shared lives carer, or they may spend some of their time with them in the carers home. Choice Support oversees the whole arrangement and makes sure it works really well. Matching the person to the right shared lives carer is critical to the success of this sort of service.

The shared lives team 0207 261 4100

POSITIVE BEHAVIOURAL SUPPORT Choice Support’s positive behavioural support team has a successful track record developing innovative services for people whose behaviours may challenge, and/or people with autistic spectrum support needs. We build local capacity and competency across Choice Support and at times work directly in some of the organisation’s services. We also offer consultancy services in the form of training and assessment.

SUPPORTMATCH HOME SHARE

CONTACT 0160 490 5517 [email protected]

ABOUT US

The aim is to set up a mutual arrangement (and legal agreement) between householder and homesharer which is both flexible and signed-off between the two parties. Supportmatch coordinators help broker the arrangement to ensure a successful match.

After registering with Supportmatch, the first step is a face-to-face meeting with our coordinator. Once we have identified the needs of the householder and the skills/requirements of the homesharer our coordinator aims to find the best suitable match. This takes 2 to 4 weeks.

Our extensive lists of homesharers are carefully selected, subject to a very thorough vetting system. We take great care over each homesharer’s requests and needs in order to create a successful match.

Once a householder and homesharer are matched our aim is to facilitate their relationship by offering a regular monitoring service for the duration of the match (usually 6 to 12 months, but matches can go on for a second or third year if required).

INTRODUCTION Following a recent reorganisation and restructure within Customer Services Revenue and Benefits we are pleased to announce the introduction of the Southwark Local Support Team.

Working towards achieving a sustainable service for the future ensuring efficiencies and economies of scale, it was determined that the former Rightfully Yours Team should be amalgamated with SESS, Hardship and One Touch to provide a combined approach offering assistance across all aspects of welfare support.

Flexible, multi skilled and able to undertake a range of duties including triage, assessment, visiting, outreach, advocacy and/or attendance at stakeholder events, this joined-up service will improve customer service and provide a deeper customer insight / more effective customer journey.

OUR AIM Provide support and guidance to those customers in an emergency, crisis or in financial hardship Support these customers in making an application to the Emergency Support Scheme or Hardship Fund and to maximise their household income by looking at their entitlement to other Welfare

BENEFITS • Calculate the need for future support for customers and plan how we ensure they have the skills to budget, go digital and ultimately gain meaningful employment if they can • Assess claims for Emergency Support / Hardship Fund using the eligibility criteria • Provide customer service excellence • Work closely with stakeholders and partners to ensure cohesive support for our customers

INCOME MAXIMISATION We offer our vulnerable residents information, advice and support to claim benefits for themselves and their household. We can assess entitlement to benefits; provide 'better off' calculations and help to resolve complex benefit issues for customers.

We provide support to some of the most vulnerable residents in Southwark (including severely disabled), who are experiencing severe financial hardship and have seen their benefits reduced as a result of recent welfare changes. We complete a benefit maximisation check on every referral.

Are you claiming all that you are entitled to? We can help you. Please visit our page for further information: Income Maximisation
