  • The Montreal Forum: the Final Season?
Palimpsest III: The Dialectics of Montreal’s Public Spaces Department of Art History, Concordia University The Montreal Forum: The Final Season? Rob Coles September 2010 Cynthia I. Hammond, ed. Palimpsest III: The Dialectics of Montreal’s Public Spaces Coles 1 As a site of identity for the multiple affiliations of the people of Montreal, the Montreal Forum represents much more than a hockey arena. Between 1924 and 1996, the Forum hosted thousands of events, from professional hockey, to rock concerts, circus performances, religious gatherings, professional wrestling and events of the 1976 Summer Olympics. In 1996 the Montreal Canadiens Hockey Club, the main occupants of the site, moved from the Forum to the Molson (now Bell) Centre. After the departure of the Canadiens was announced, many Montreal residents feared that the Forum would be destroyed. A huge public outcry to save the building ensued. The Forum was ultimately saved and transformed into an entertainment complex called the Pepsi Forum that incorporated some memorabilia from the site’s history into its design. With this attempt to keep the local affect of the Forum alive in mind, this essay asks why so many were opposed to the demolition of the Forum? Was the adaptive re-use of the Forum successful in capturing the essential and important aspects of the building for its fans? The Montreal Forum was a key site of expression and identity in Montreal not only for supporters of the Canadiens hockey team. For the city’s francophone population and fans of popular music, the Forum was also important. As this essay demonstrates, while the Pepsi Forum includes memorabilia in its interior design, important connections between the Forum and the rise of Quebec nationalism are only summarily represented, as is the impact of the Forum as a key music venue in Montreal; the “Forum Gallery”, a small museum located on the second floor of the building, is out of the view and spatial experience of most visitors today.

OLLECTORS CAFE PRESENTS Jackie Robinson’s Original 1945 Montreal Royals and Original 1947 Brooklyn Dodgers Contracts Founding Documents of the Civil Rights Movement OLLECTORS CAFE The Global, Lifestyle, Collectibles Brand is Coming! The Collectibles and Memorabilia industry is a $250+ billion dollar per year global market that is substantially fragmented with no one entity owning more than one half of one percent of market share. Further, there is NO MEETING PLACE for collectors to gather with other like minded collectors socially, and display their passion for their own collections. Lastly, there is no place to purchase all categories of collectibles, under one trusted umbrella, in a safe, AUTHENTICITY INSURED, environment. This is all about to change with the launch of the Collectors Cafe Company, where “PRE-APPRAISED, “PRE-AUTHENTICATED” and “PRE-INSURED” collectibles will be coming soon. Through the invention of AUTHENTICITY INSURANCE by company founder Mykalai Kontilai, Collectors Cafe has successfully executed agreements with some of the largest insurance companies who will underwrite all collectibles offered on the website. Lloyds of London (Hiscox), AIG, Liberty Mutual, Chubb, C.V Starr, Navigators, and XL are all exclusive underwriters and partners. This amazing accomplishment, we believe, will spark a COLLECTIBLES REVOLUTION, which will begin to consolidate the industry through the first online and global “One-Stop Shop” for buying, selling, and social networking for the entire collectibles market place. Driving the brand will be a plethora of multi-media assets, including but not limited to, the Collectors Cafe TV Series, The Collectors Cafe Blogger Network, The Collectors Tube Digital Content Platform, The Collectors Cafe Celebrity Collector Portal, The Collectors Cafe Master Dealer Network, and the Collectors Cafe IP Portfolio.

WINTER 2020 weyland siblings supporting each other on & off the ice! Feature Interviews With: COLE MILLER From kc to the whl Wes McCauley NHL’s top referee Hockey participation offers families value beyond making an individual player a better player or even a better athlete. The game of hockey is a powerful platform for participants to build character, foster positive values and develop important life skills. These benefits are available to all players, desirable to every family and transcend the game. WE BELIEVE • Hockey should be an enjoyable family experience; all stakeholders-organizations, players, parents, siblings, coaches, referees, volunteers and rink operators-play a role in this effort. • Hockey’s greatest value is the role it plays in the development of character and life skills. ISSUE • All hockey organizations, regardless of size or level of competition, bring value to players and families in their abaility to deliver a positive family experience. • Physical activity is important for a healthy body, mind and spirit. • There are significant benfits of youth participation in multiple sports. • Hockey programs should be age-appropriate for all players, accounting for each individual’s physical, emotional and cognitive devlopment. • There is great value in all forms of hockey, both on and off the ice. • All hockey programs should provide a safe, positive and inclusive environment for players and families regardless of race, colour, religion, national origin, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation and socio- econmic status. Simply put, hockey is for everyone. We believe in our ability to improve lives and strengthen communities globally through hockey. Operational and Policy Governance are clearly understood. The Board of Directors and Members have adapted well. Again, I stress how pleased I am to work with a team striving to improve our organization and game. The Board recognizes that hockey is a passion with high expectations from our country. The mandatory Initiation Program is experiencing some concern in a few areas; however, I have been impressed with the progress and attitude of the Members actively involved in promoting the value of this program. It is pleasant to receive compliments supporting the Board for this initiative. It is difficult to be critical of a program that works on improvement and develops skills as well as incorporating fun in the game.

  • The Pittsburgh I Remember Is a City That Will Use This Act of Hate to Build a Place of Love and Hope
THE PITTSBURGH I REMEMBER IS A CITY THAT WILL USE THIS ACT OF HATE TO BUILD A PLACE OF LOVE AND HOPE By Ron Sirak • @ronsirak October 28, 2018 I remember the old Pittsburgh, the grimy city of steel mills and pollution, a lunch pail-carrying kind of place where the sweat of the blast furnaces was washed away with a shot and a beer. I remember a fiercely proud area that viewed Eastern Pennsylvania as another state, perhaps even another country. Pittsburgh, Western Pennsylvania, even has its own language. Phrases such as: “What yinz doin’ after you red up the house?” clang on the outsider’s ear like the wail of a car alarm at 3 in the morning. My mother, who worked as a welder from 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. and then as a cleaning woman in an office from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., said of Eastern Pa.: “They’re from the anthracite region; we’re from the bituminous region,” as if that was a stamp you’d get on your passport. My father drove a ladle crane in about every mill in Western Pa. and Eastern Ohio as the steel industry was dying. United Engineering. Mesta Machine. Youngstown Sheet & Tube, Sharon Steel, Jones & Laughlin and finally Pennsylvania Engineering in our hometown of New Castle, 50 miles from Pittsburgh. That’s where he was working when he died at the age of 45, the life sucked from him by relentlessly hard work. When I was a kid the Interstate hadn’t been built yet and the drive to Pittsburgh to see a Pirates game at Forbes Field was an arduous affair, following a windy road that that traced the river.
