FN-SSB.104 THE HEALTHFUL SOYBEAN Soy protein bars, soy milk, soy cookies, soy burgers .…. the list of soy products goes on. Soybeans are best known as a source of high quality protein. They are also rich in calcium, iron, zinc, vitamin E, several B-vitamins, and fiber. But in 1999, soy took the nation by storm. The Food and Drug Administration approved health claims that soy protein may lower the risk of heart disease if at least 25 grams of soy protein are consumed daily. This benefit may be because soybeans are low saturated fat, have an abundance of omega-3 fatty acids, and are rich in isoflavones. Research continues to explore health benefits linked to the healthful soybean. Beyond research, edamame, tempeh, tofu, and soy milk make the base for some truly delectable dishes. Exploring Soyfoods Fresh Green Soybeans Edamame (fresh green soybeans) have a sweet, buttery flavor and a tender-firm texture. Fresh soybeans still in the pod should be cooked and stored in the refrigerator. Handle frozen soybeans as you would any other frozen vegetable. The easiest way to cook washed, fresh soybeans in the pod is to simmer them in salted water for 5 minutes. Once the beans are drained and cooled, remove them from the pod. Eat as a snack or simmer an additional 10 to 15 minutes to use as a side dish. Substitute soybeans for lima beans, mix the beans into soups or casseroles in place of cooked dried beans, or toss the beans with pasta or rice salads. Dried Soybeans Dried mature soybeans are cooked like other dried beans. -

Projected imports from Mexico in 2015/16 are reduced by 595,000 STRV, as the reductions in other supplies and total use reduces the calculation of U.S. Needs, as defined in the agreement to suspend the countervailing duty investigation signed between the U.S. Department of Commerce (USDOC) and the Government of Mexico in December 2014. -

These seed coats constitute 7 to 10% of the weight of a bushel of soybeans so they provide a substantial opportunity to add value to each bushel. Overall, the United States produces approximately 6 million metric tons of seed coats each year. Biologically active compounds contained in soybean seed coats have been shown to prevent and or reduce macular degeneration, obesity, cancer, and many other debilitating diseases. For example the seed coats of YJ-100 black soybeans contain more than 20 mg/g of anthocyanins, the highest concentration of anthocyanins of all plants materials including other row crops. -

My patients have seen huge improvements by changing their sugar choices. Brown rice syrup. Your bloodstream absorbs this balanced syrup, high in maltose and complex carbohydrates, slowly and steadily. Brown rice syrup is a natural for baked goods and hot drinks. It adds subtle sweetness and a rich, butterscotch-like flavor. To get sweetness from starchy brown rice, the magic ingredients are enzymes, but the actual process varies depending on the syrup manufacturer. "Malted" syrups use whole, sprouted barley to create a balanced sweetener. Choose these syrups to make tastier muffins and cakes. Cheaper, sweeter rice syrups use isolated enzymes and are a bit harder on blood sugar levels. For a healthy treat, drizzle gently heated rice syrup over popcorn to make natural caramel corn. Store in a cool, dry place. Devansoy is the brand name for powdered brown rice sweetener, which contains the same complex carbohydrates as brown rice syrup and a natural plant flavoring. -

Florida Blueberry PROJECT ICP Pollination Blueberries Require Pollination Blueberries need to be cross-pollinated with another cultivar of the same species (rabbiteye or southern highbush blueberry) in order to produce fruit. Cross-pollination allows for better fruit set, berry size, and earlier ripening. Most growers bring in managed European honey bee hives or commercial bumble bees for pollination. Several types of wild bees are also effective and abundant pollinators of Florida blueberries. All of these different kinds of bees visit blueberry flowers to collect pollen and nectar to feed their young. Integrated Crop Pollination: combining strategies to improve pollination Having many different species of pollinators can help ensure reliable pollination. Different species of bees tend to visit flowers at different times of the day and are active at different times throughout the bloom season; having a diverse set of bees active in your fields can ensure consistent pollination from the beginning to the end of crop bloom. Honey bee abundance and wild bee diversity are both important contributors to southeastern US blueberry pollination. Cool, rainy, and windy spring weather can lead to poor pollination. When multiple pollinator species are active, more flowers are likely to be visited on poor weather days. Large-bodied bees, including all three types of wild bees that visit Florida blueberry flowers, stay more active under Pollination is essential for blueberry production.
