"THE MESSAGE" premieres on BET Networks on Wednesday, June 4 at 10:00 pm ET, followed by new episodes every Wednesday throughout the month of June. "Hip Hop is a seed planted and nourished amongst the "broken glass everywhere" of mid-seventies New York. It has grown to be a worldwide phenomenon and the dominant culture of at least one generation. This exciting series examines the origin and the path of the music and message taking care to objectively analyze its factions and movements," said Stephen Hill, President of Music Programing and Specials, BET Networks. "THE MESSAGE" features intimate first person testimonies from Hip Hop's most influential contributors including Russell Simmons, Ice Cube, Birdman, Pharrell, Nas, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Rick Ross, MC Lyte, Master P, LL Cool J, Big Boi, Bun B, 2 Chainz, Eve, Angie Martinez, Funkmaster Flex, Luther Campbell, Clive Davis, Mona Scott-Young, Questlove, A$AP Rocky, E-40, David Banner, Fab Five Freddy, Nelson George, Big Tigger, Sway and many more including Chris Lighty's final on-air interview. "THE MESSAGE" will be broken down into four, one hour episodes: Episode 1 - The Birth and Proliferation of Hip Hop - The premiere episode traces the roots of Hip Hop from its birth in New York and spread to California with limited support from the mainstream media. Premieres June 4 at 10:00 pm Episode 2 - Trials and Tribulations - Will Hip Hop be able to grow up in a world that is no longer just about peace, love, unity and having fun? Hip Hop faces its first roadblocks with violent realities and extreme opposition from those who disagree with its messaging. Meanwhile, a new voice begins to form. Premieres June 11 at 10:00 pm Episode 3 - Women, Cash, Clothes - Hip Hop explores a new reality of lasciviousness, wealth and entrepreneurship characterized by fast cars, big jewelry, the birth of the video vixen and the start of popular clothing lines including Rocawear, Sean Jean and Wu Wear. • The Life & Rhymes of Jay-Z, an Historical Biography
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: THE LIFE & RHYMES OF JAY-Z, AN HISTORICAL BIOGRAPHY: 1969-2004 Omékongo Dibinga, Doctor of Philosophy, 2015 Dissertation directed by: Dr. Barbara Finkelstein, Professor Emerita, University of Maryland College of Education. Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the life and ideas of Jay-Z. It is an effort to illuminate the ways in which he managed the vicissitudes of life as they were inscribed in the political, economic cultural, social contexts and message systems of the worlds which he inhabited: the social ideas of class struggle, the fact of black youth disempowerment, educational disenfranchisement, entrepreneurial possibility, and the struggle of families to buffer their children from the horrors of life on the streets. Jay-Z was born into a society in flux in 1969. By the time Jay-Z reached his 20s, he saw the art form he came to love at the age of 9—hip hop— become a vehicle for upward mobility and the acquisition of great wealth through the sale of multiplatinum albums, massive record deal signings, and the omnipresence of hip-hop culture on radio and television. In short, Jay-Z lived at a time where, if he could survive his turbulent environment, he could take advantage of new terrains of possibility. This dissertation seeks to shed light on the life and development of Jay-Z during a time of great challenge and change in America and beyond. • Innovation Diffusion: Marketing Drivers of Hip-Hop Success
Innovation Diffusion: Marketing Drivers of Hip-Hop Success Chuck Tomkovick, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Justin Eder, Hip-Hop Event Organizer & Artist hen Clive Campbell, aka DJ Kool Herc, organized an after-school party in 1971 at his sister’s request, he had little idea he was inventing hip-hop, and even less of an idea Wthat his South Bronx style would spark music and fashion innovation for generations to come.1 By hopping back and forth between two turntables using duplicate copies of the same record, Kool Herc was able to extend the percussion breakdown (“the breaks”) of songs, enabling break-dancers and emcees to show and prove their skills.2 From this eclectic collage of deejaying, break-dancing, graffiti expression, and emceeing, hip-hop culture was born.3 Fast-forwarding to today, hip-hop has been an amazing commercial success. With over $12 billion in estimated annual sales4 (comprised of CDs, DVDs, digital downloads, clothing, books, magazines, ringtones, beverages, and other assorted products), the size and scope of hip-hop merchandise, and its widespread adoption, is the envy of many in the world of pop culture. Curious onlookers and those appreciative of marketing’s role in innovation diffusion wonder how this culture has spread so pervasively. Where is hip-hop in its product life cycle? Why are people of such diverse geographic and ethnic backgrounds so willing to embrace a culture that was spawned primarily by minorities in the South Bronx? Answering these and other related questions provided the motivation for this marketing module. 1 # # ʯ%ÿ৺ %# ʯ6ʯÿ6ʯ֊8ӹӹޱ״ȶʯϻ% $ÿ״ʯÿ8# ÿ6״6৺ϻ$ÿ6״״7 2 Marketing Drivers of Hip-Hop Success The diffusion of hip-hop culture, from its earliest days to its powerful world stage presence today, can be attributed to four major market- ing forces: rhythmic market visionaries with a penchant for fashion and branding, innate consumer attraction to underdogs and rebels, the merging of media and modern technology, and unabashed corpo- rate co-optation.

THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION ARTS & SCIENCES “I THOUGHT ABOUT KILLING YOU”: CONSIDERING THE UTILITY OF RHETORICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL CRITICAL APPROACHES TO KANYE WEST’S YE CORY N. STEINLE SPRING 2020 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for baccalaureate degrees in Communication Arts and Sciences and Labor and Employment Relations with honors in Communication Arts and Sciences Reviewed and approved* by the following: Bradford Vivian Professor of Communication Arts & Sciences Thesis Supervisor Lori Bedell Associate Teaching Professor in Communication Arts & Sciences Honors Adviser * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College. i ABSTRACT This paper examines the merits of intrinsic and extrinsic critical approaches to hip-hop artifacts. To do so, I provide both a neo-Aristotelian and biographical criticism of three songs from ye (2018) by Kanye West. Chapters 1 & 2 consider Roland Barthes’ The Death of the Author and other landmark papers in rhetorical and literary theory to develop an intrinsic and extrinsic approach to criticizing ye (2018), evident in Tables 1 & 2. Chapter 3 provides the biographical antecedents of West’s life prior to the release of ye (2018). Chapters 4, 5, & 6 supply intrinsic (neo-Aristotelian) and extrinsic (biographical) critiques of the selected artifacts. Each of these chapters aims to address the concerns of one of three guiding questions: which critical approaches prove most useful to the hip-hop consumer listening to this song? How can and should the listener construct meaning? Are there any improper ways to critique and interpret this song? Chapter 7 discusses the variance in each mode of critical analysis from Chapters 4, 5, & 6.

  • The Justice in Policing Act of 2020 in the U.S
June 23, 2020 Honorable Nancy Pelosi Speaker of the House 1236 Longworth House Office Building Washington, DC 20515 Honorable Kevin McCarthy Republican Leader 2468 Rayburn House Office Building Washington, DC 20515 Dear Speaker Pelosi and Leader McCarthy: Since the killing of George Floyd just one month ago, our country has seen protests grow, attitudes shift, and calls for change intensify. We in the music and entertainment communities believe that Black lives matter and have long decried the injustices endured by generations of Black citizens. We are more determined than ever to push for federal, state, and local law enforcement programs that truly serve their communities. Accordingly, we are grateful for movement of the Justice in Policing Act of 2020 in the U.S. House of Representatives and urge its quick passage. The Justice in Policing Act is not about marginal change; it takes bold steps that will make a real, positive difference for law enforcement and the communities they serve. We celebrate the long- overdue rejection of qualified immunity, emphasizing that law enforcement officers themselves are not above the law – that bad cops must be held accountable and victims must have recourse. We applaud the provisions to ban chokeholds and no-knock warrants, to establish a national police misconduct registry, to collect data and improve investigations into police misconduct, to promote de-escalation practices, to establish comprehensive training programs, and to update and enhance standards and practices. This legislation will not only promote justice; it will establish a culture of responsibility, fairness, and respect deserving of the badge. Our communities and nation look to you to take a stand in this extraordinary moment and we respectfully ask that you vote YES on the Justice in Policing Act of 2020.
