3 Introduction Introduction

Situated in rural West , Cappoquin is a town of 700 inhabitants which developed at an important crossing point on the river Blackwater. The town like so many has lost its traditional industrial base and needs to reinvent itself. Cappoquin has a number of assets including its picturesque location on a bend in the river, at the foothills of the Mountains. Much of the town’s architecture is eighteenth and nineteenth century construction, in fact the town’s essential character has not changed dramatically from this time and it retains its aesthetic qualities of environment and setting. Cappoquin can be described as having • An attractive picturesque rural setting • A town centre which is under performing with considerable vacancy and dereliction Aerial photo of Cappoquin • The natural connecting hub between the River Blackwater and the

5 Origins, Evolution and Current State A Brief History of the Town

Cappoquin is sited on a bend in the River Blackwater, having grown from an early waterside settlement. Archaeological findings suggest this settle- ment dates back to the Mesolithic era. According to the website logainm.ie, the name Cappoquin is an anglicisation of the Irish name Ceapach Choinn meaning “the tillage-plot of Con”.

The maps (1656-1658) for the of Coshmore & Cosh- ma depict a castle at Cappoquin and another structure that may be the Market House. A river crossing is shown also. On the Bernard Scale map of (1776), the town is noted as Caporquin, and a slightly more detailed image of a castle appears as the only significant marker of the town. The drawing shows a two-bay structure, with one bay standing taller, perhaps showing a building somewhere in transition between the Fitzgerald Castle and that stands today.
