the new blue: yale’s women of note

HISTORY In the fall of 1969, the first-ever class of female undergraduates set foot on the campus of Yale University. Despite the presence of a thriving group culture, an all-women’s ensemble was conspicuously absent from the university’s musical scene. Amee Wood, a member of a women’s a cappella group at Skidmore, and Jim Weber, then president of the Yale Club, collaborated with Glee Club conductor Fenno Heath to organize auditions for the first female a cappella group at Yale. Following the inaugural auditions, eleven women were accepted to the group and then left to their own devices. Intent on breaking from the all-male tradition of Yale’s “Old Blue” and embodying the new face of the university, these pioneering women dubbed themselves “The New Blue.”

As representatives of a new musical genre and a new type of leadership at Yale, New Blue’s early members fought for the group to be taken seriously. The dismissive phrase “the new who?” became a campus joke; sassy from the start, New Blue responded by releasing their first studio LP in 1970, entitled Since You Asked. The group’s sound and image continued to evolve as members composed original arrangements intended to highlight the diversity of the female vocal range; harmonies weaving soaring soprano notes and tenor-range alto basslines challenged the notion that a complex and wide spectrum of sound was the exclusive territory of men’s a cappella. The group’s standard of professionalism and musical excellence commanded respect both on- and off-campus: a review in the 1975 Yale Daily News called The New Blue “a fine group of singers” and in the same year, members of The New Blue were the first women to step inside Mory’s Temple Bar, a famous Yale dining room and club previously open only to men. For the same spirit of distinction and quality, The New Blue’s thirtieth anniversary CD, Can’t Stop, received the Contemporary A Cappella Society’s award for Best Collegiate Album.

Today, The New Blue is to maintaining a dynamic repertoire that encompasses a wide variety of styles and is arranged exclusively by members. We produce a new studio album every other year, and our latest album, Joyride, was recorded during the 2012-2013 school year and will be released in late August. We also embark on two performance tours each year; recently, we’ve entertained audiences in San Francisco, Puerto Rico, Washington, D.C., and Pittsburgh on domestic tours, while international tours have taken us to London, Paris, Athens, and Istanbul. In the next academic year, we look forward to touring Hong Kong and Singapore in the winter and Chicago in the spring.

The New Blue is a completely student-run group that is financially and managerially independent from Yale University. A registered 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization, New Blue is funded by its own CD sales and concert fees. In recent years, The New Blue has performed at Oxford University, the Empire State Building, and the Pentagon; we have performed the National Anthem for a Panther’s NHL game and serenaded such actors as Bill Cosby and Steve Martin, as well as former President George H. W. Bush and current president Barack Obama during his term as senator. During the school year, The New Blue performs for a variety of schools, country clubs, private parties, and special events across the Northeast. Composed of fifteen talented, intelligent, and personable undergraduate women from across the country and around the world, New Blue offers top-notch infused with youthful spirit, producing memorable events for audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Whether singing for an intimate black-tie affair, singing in a community benefit concert, or sharing with students, the women of The New Blue consistently captivate audiences with their professional poise and inspiring presence.
