Proudly supported by McDonald Real Estate Ltd. 2 District Governor’s Message Hi all Lions There has been a lot happening in our 202D District since our last cabinet meeting in Patea. The DG visits by Louise, Megan and myself are nearly complete and I thank the two VDGs for the effort they have put in. Our District is fortunate to have two very capable people as VDGs. What a pleasure it has been to meet so many enthusiastic Lions and hearing about variety and the wonderful service projects they undertake in their communities. I look forward to visiting all Lions Clubs in our District before the end of the Lions year. It is encouraging that clubs are taking up the challenge to review how they operate, and the projects they undertake. It is good to see changes being made, adapting to what actually works best for them and their communities. May this continue to all sectors of the Lions organization. YOUTH EXCHANGEES Urgent request from our North & South Youth Coordinator’s for Lions to host the following exchange coming into our 202D District in December 2019. PLEASE HELP.  3 young women from 21/12/2019 to 27th Dec when they leave to attend camp in Tauranga. Ages, one 18 yr and two 17yrs  Malaysian & Australian from 17/12/2019 to 27th Dec when they leave to attend camp in Tauranga. Two Malaysian young ladies One Australian boy. DISTRICT MEMBERSHIP Our District membership is at 1087 which is minus 14 from 1st July 2019. Clubs are inducting new members but some are yet to be registered on My LCI. A reminder to clubs that members who have been inducted but not registered are not covered by Lions Insurance while undertaking projects. Proudly supported by McDonald Real Estate Ltd. 3 District Governor’s Message cont; NEW CLUBS Central currently has 16 members plus two friends of Lions, still 5 – 6 members short to charter, and Palmerston North Clearview Park are also sitting at 16 members with a further 2 prospective members in the wings. With a concerted effort both clubs should charter in this Lions year. LIONS TRAINING The District had 1st VDG Louise and 2nd VDG Megan attend ALLI training in Christchurch. As cabinet we need to continue to encourage members to attend training courses by utilising the programmes which are available such as; Stand & Deliver in Wellington on 15-16th Feb 2020 and ELLI in Christchurch on 17thto 19th April 2020 and Pathways to Leadership TBC. For those keen to learn more about Lions the LCI site has many opportunities to undertake courses on a varied range of topics. DISTRICT GOALS As District Governor I am required to set goals for our District. This is current brief overview: Leadership

 Club Officer Training 92% achieved from the two evenings held. The clubs which did not attend training have received the full complement of manuals along with a discussion on training to achieve 100%.  Zone Training: 100% achieved  Lions Leadership Institutes: To have six members attend LLI training. Currently we have 2 attending ALLI and look forward to at least another 4 either at ELLI, Pathways to Leadership and Stand & Deliver in the New Year. Regardless of where you live, the change of the seasons comes with certain rituals. For many of us, those rituals involve food. Whether it’s the smell of your grandmother’s soup or your neighbor’s hot dogs on the grill, the smells of the season fill you with warm memories. But that may not be the case for those living with hunger. For many, this time of year brings fear and anxiety. Yet another cold winter to make it through with little to eat. Or one more long hot summer without a school lunch for a hungry child. As Lions, it’s our responsibility to help those who need us. No one in our communities should wonder where their next meal is coming from. But whenever possible, we should look beyond the short-term fixes. Yes, we should stock food pantries and man soup kitchens. But we should also look at the bigger picture. What is causing our neighbors to be hungry? And how can we, as Lions, help change the odds for families that are struggling? Everyone should have the opportunity to make choices that are good for their health. Everyone should have access to fresh fruits and vegetables. Everyone should be able to take a walk in a park or have a safe, reliable way to get to work. So, when there is a gap — no grocery store for miles, no reliable transportation, no parks — Lions can help repair these holes in our communities. We can form the social safety nets that keep our neighbors living healthy, fulfilling lives. As you plan your holiday meals or fire up your summer grills, think of ways your community could be better serving everyone. And find a way to fix it. Sincerely, Dr. Jung-Yul Choi International President, Lions Clubs International Proudly supported by McDonald Real Estate Ltd. 7 Multiple District News

Proudly supported by McDonald Real Estate Ltd. 8 District News District Governor Report cont. Membership:  Target to be plus 10 at the end of this Lions year  We started the year with 1101 currently with are at 1087, -14 so a bit of work to do here. The Orientation and Retention team are working on some ideas on both of these key aspects.  Women’s Expo in New Plymouth had 12 potential new members speak with the team on duty. Thanks to those who set up the stall and manned it.  Papaioea Rose City club held a potential member meet and greet evening, the outcome was a number of

attendees as potential Lions. Service Activity:  A very bold goal has been set to serve 250,000 people with 75,000 being under 18 years old. It is important that clubs do report their activities, currently only 15 out of 37 clubs have reported an activity. I acknowledge clubs are having difficulty in accessing MY LION. The IT teams have been working hard to ensure at least two members in each club can operate MY LION. Goal is to 92% of clubs accessing MY LION. LCIF:  Goal is to have 80% of clubs understand the impact of our Foundation and demonstrate their support with a donation to LCIF. Increase donations by 10% over last year’s donations of US$12,510.27. Currently only two clubs have donated but most donate in May &June.

Proudly supported by McDonald Real Estate Ltd. 9 District News District Governor Report cont; Environment:  Every club has received information from the 202D District Environment Coordinator to register an Environmental project that they can be proud of. The key is to let Gerard Karalus know what project you are attending to undertake in this 202D initiative. Plan your project. Promote your project in your community Report your project on MY LION Zone chairs please promote this initiative Lions continue the wonderful projects of service you are doing, have fun and enjoy fellowship of one another and keep asking; What is my job in Lions? What is it that needs doing that I know something about that probably won’t happen unless I take responsibility for it? • Meet on a monthly basis and clean up a beach, community space, or roadside area as a club.

• Challenge all Lions in your club or district to add at least one green habit to their daily lives. Inspire others by sharing your actions on social media. Habits might include: −−Using a reusable water bottle or coffee mug rather than disposable products.

−−Changing to energy-saving lightbulbs.

• Recognize a local organization or community leader for their efforts in environmental conservation.

• Calculate your carbon footprint with an online calculator. If your footprint is bigger than you would like, purchase carbon credits that are Gold Standard Certified and brainstorm ways you can lower your carbon input.

• Volunteer with your local park service to maintain trails. You will help more people access and enjoy nature!

• Collect used cell phones and donate them to individuals in need.

• Develop a demonstration garden or landscaping plot using native plant species to encourage restoration of the local natural habitat and water conservation.

• Work with local schools to establish organic school gardens and a composting program to improve the quality of school meals and reduce waste. Proudly supported by McDonald Real Estate Ltd. 11 What’s Lions Hi everyone, it’s been a while since I’ve had a reason to reach out to our Lions partners but as we’re now into Spring and Diabetes Action Month (November) is well and truly at the forefront of our minds I wanted to touch base to let you know the theme of this year’s campaign. I’m pleased to be able to advise that our theme this year will be “It’s About Time”. The theme gives us scope to have fun but also plays on the idea of encouraging early detection and early, optimal treatment for type 2 diabetes. It encompasses time bound actions for individuals, whanau, the wider community, healthcare professionals and the government who can all take action NOW to make a difference for themselves, their families and their communities.

Our Branches are still very much in the process of organising their events and activities, but early indications are that many of the events that took place last year are likely to be repeated this year. If your club would like to offer your support please let me know and I can put you in touch with your nearest DNZ branch if you don’t already have a contact there. For your convenience I have attached a link to the Branch page of our website also. https://www.diabetes.org.nz/branches

If there isn’t a DNZ branch in your area, you may like to organize something independently. Strides events have always been a successful way to create a buzz in communities and is always a great fun filled family focused day. https://lionsclubs.org/sites/default/files/Service-Project- Planners/SPP_Strides-for-Diabetes_en.pdf. Last year some Lions clubs offered to distribute posters highlighting symptoms of Type 1 diabetes to medical centres in their communities. We have plenty left so if you didn’t do it last year, perhaps 2019 could be the year for you? Proudly supported by McDonald Real Estate Ltd. 17 Club Leadership---Global Leadership Team PN Middle District Presidents Report (Dennis Wan): What a month for me. Jan’s brother died suddenly late Aug with- out leaving a will and having no family except his brother and two sisters. Making it more difficult was he lived in Australia. This is going to be a long and expensive process. I would urge everyone who does not have a will to make one as soon as possible as it will save your family a huge amount of heartache and worry. Tell your children to make one as well. Now on to better things. The club has been busy especially the various sub committees such as the convention committee who I know are hard at work preparing for Feb 2020. The mini golf people seeking resource consent and preparing plans and of course the projects committee preparing for the coming summer of fund-raising events. The first one commencing in a few weeks’ time. Well done every-one and thank you for all your good work. Well done to DG Roy and Zone Chair-man Graeme who attended the Clearview meeting at Julia Wallace and assisting with the formation of a full Lions Club. They currently have approx. 16 members but need about 20-22 to form. MDL have been asked to sponsor this fledgling club and I urge you all if there is some way you can assist please let DG Roy know. The spuds are all in the ground and we all (except Terry and John) have 94 days to produce maximum crops. T & J had 96 days. You never know it might make a difference!!! Good luck everyone. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Hawera Mt View President’s Report—Maree Goldworthy A busy time with Cameo, Pink ribbon and World Service day. This was very enjoyable and thanks to everyone that helped in any way. 9 of us went to Normanby Lions Tea meeting. Mike Short was the speaker, he is the Publicity and Marketing officer and is in cabinet. We have a few things coming up between now and Christmas and I know everyone will do their bit to assist. We have the CMF Walk for Kids 19th October, Speechmakers on 3rd November. Then there is Arts in the Park, the Christmas raffle, Breakfast with Santa 14th December and Christmas potatoes. These are just a few of the things coming up. Put your running shoes on ladies! Proudly supported by McDonald Real Estate Ltd. 18 Club Membership---Global Membership Team District --- Marketing & Publicity On the 19th and 20th of this month there was a “Woman’s Lifestyle Expo” held at the TSB Stadium in New Plymouth. Thousands of women attended the expo to seek out what’s new and available in feminine products and services. On the 19th(Saturday) it was mayhem and most exhibitors were busy, however on the next day the client was a little more relaxed and layback, and a mother daughter outing.

There were more than 120 companies involved at the annual New Plymouth Women's Lifestyle Expo at the TSB Stadium over the weekend, with features including a beauty lounge, makeup lounge, hair lounge plus a taste zone, artisan craft zone, goodie bags and service groups. Among the Service groups there was Lions Club-New Voices promoting Lions clubs in our region and actively seeking the recruitment of women for our clubs. Over the 2 days we obtained over a dozen membership requests to join clubs from Whanganui up to Waitara.

Proudly supported by McDonald Real Estate Ltd. 19 Club Membership---GMT cont; Bell Block Puketapu Jenny joined our Bell Block Puketapu Club in July 2006, having been an Eltham Lion since February 2004. She became a Director, then Vice President for the next 2 years before becoming President in 2009-10. The next year she was Zone 6 Chairman. Towards the end of 2010, it was suggested that 202D hold a Multiple District Convention in New Plymouth. So one thing led to another, the Zone agreed to help, a Committee was formed and Jenny was asked to be Chairman. All this while she was on the District Cabinet as well. Once it was all over, Jenny was presented with Life Membership of the Lloyd Morgan Lions Clubs Charitable Trust of which she was already an Honoured Member after her year as President. Jenny has continued leading from the front over the past few years - Director of Welfare, Youth, Programme, and even Cabinet Almoner. Also Tail Twister twice and fill in on many other occasions. Now a senior Club member, it is time to officially recognise what Jenny has given for the Bell Block Puketapu Lions over the past 13 years. District Governor Roy makes the presentation to Jenny. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Suddenly, the man realized that the next day, he would need his wife to wake him at 5:0 0 AM for an early morning business flight. Not wanting to be the first to break the silence (and LOSE), he wrote on a piece of paper, 'Please wake me at 5:00 AM. He left it where he knew she would find it. The next morning, the man woke up, only to discover it was 9:00 AM and he had missed his flight Furious, he was about to go and see why his wife hadn't wakened him, when he noticed a piece of paper by the bed. The paper said, 'It is 5:00 AM. Wake up.' Men are not equipped for these kinds of contests. God may have created man before woman, but there is always a rough draft before the masterpiece ############################################################### Feilding Host Please, please help! I’m having a problem with my car. I think the transmission is messed up. My car works fine during the daytime but won’t drive at all at night. I put it in “D” for daytime and I can go where I need to, but at night time when I put it in “N” for night, it won’t move. To top it off, the other day I was sitting at the Lights and this Guy sitting next to me wanted to race. The lights turned green, I slammed it into “R” for race, stomped on the Accelerator, and slammed into the car behind me. Any help with this situation would be greatly appreciated.

She replied that she was nervous and afraid she would not remember what to do. The celebrant told her that she only needed to remember 3 things. First the aisle, because that is what you'll be walking down. Secondly, the alter because that is where you will arrive. Finally, remember hymn because that is a type of song we will sing during the service. While the bride was walking to the wedding march, family and friends of the groom were horrified to hear her repeating these 3 words to herself. . . One afternoon they were carrying on in the bedroom together when her husband arrived home unexpectedly. ‘Quick,’ said the women to the lover, ‘into the closet!’ and she pushed him in the closet, stark naked. The husband, however, became suspicious and after a search of the bedroom discovered the man in the closet. ‘Who are you?’ he asked him. ‘I’m an inspector from Bug-B Gone,’ said the exterminator. ‘What are doing in there?’ the husband asked. ‘I’m investigating a complaint about an infestation of moths,’ the man replied. ‘And where are your clothes?’ asked the husband. The man looked down at himself and said, ‘Those little bastards!’

The next Emerging Lions Leadership Institute for Lions members of MD202 New Zealand will be held in Christchurch from 17 – 19 April 2020.

This institute teaches valuable leadership skills at the club level and is targeted at Lions who have not yet been a club president.

We actively encourage qualified candidates to apply.

Any Lion who has not yet served as President is eligible to apply. This course is excellent preparation for those who are about to take on Board roles, particularly those of President or Vice President.

The cost to participants is NZ$100.

Please think about it, and discuss with your club Board. It would be great if our district could send a good contingent of members to this institute.

Please get in contact with Louise Knapman [email protected] for registration forms and further information.
