Now Bernsen is setting his sights closer to home, on Akron, Ohio, with the hopes of saving an ailing soap box derby tradition. Bernsen is directing "25 Hill," a family-friendly production with a budget of about $500,000 that begins shooting Wednesday in the town once nicknamed the Rubber City. He aims to save Advertisement Corbin Bernsen (Getty) its nearly 75-year-old racing league, the All-American Soap Box Derby. In September, Bernsen read an article in USA Today about how the derby had a debt of $623,000 with a local bank and was facing extinction. "The derby used to be this huge event; 50,000 people used to show up, and Chevrolet was a huge sponsor," Bernsen said Monday from his production offices in Akron. "But the times, the economy, the kids got into other interests. Sponsorship has really dwindled. It's a nonprofit, and it needs money." The boy teams up with a father figure whose own son, a firefighter, died in the line of duty, and the two help each other find redemption and revive the derby. "The Larry David working on more 'Curb' idea is to show that the derby is alive and well. This is not a nostalgic period movie." 545 Bernsen helped the town raise the money for the shoot, which will be done in three segments, incorporating into the schedule his work on USA's "Psych." • Actor Bernsen Enjoying Ride of Derby Movie Project: Akron Beacon Journal
Actor Bernsen enjoying ride of derby movie project: Akron Beacon Journal By Rich Heldenfels, Beacon Journal staff writer POSTED: 06:34 p.m. EST, Nov 20, 2009 Corbin Bernsen after crossing the finish line at Derby Downs Friday. The actor has written a screenplay with a story line involving the All-American Soap Box Derby and is in town to scout out the location for filming.(Karen Schiely/Akron Beacon Journal) Actor-producer-director Corbin Bernsen stood gleefully at the bottom of the hill at Derby Downs minutes after having ridden down in an All-American Soap Box Derby racer. ''It's unbelievable,'' he said. ''No, you're not going 8,000 miles an hour but it's pure. Simple. It's clean. It's just a real thrill. And you know what's funny? . It actually sustains. I'm still smiling. It's not like it's over and then it's OK, get me to my next computer thing. As much as I want to go back up there, I wish my littlest son were here. I wish all my sons were here right now. They would have the biggest smiles on their face.'' The words poured from the voluble Bernsen, whose credits include L.A. Law, Major League and Psych. He was feeling something firsthand that is familiar to the generations of racers who have passed through Akron, or dreamed of getting there. It is something Bernsen sensed was important when he read a story about the derby's financial woes in USA Today. And the story led him to write, in a rapid six weeks, a derby-themed screenplay.

It was a staple in the diets of legionnaires, of Ancient Rome, the infantry. It’s basically Parmesan’s saltier, tangier, cooler cousin. It’s worth noting that my saltier, tangier, cooler cousin is here tonight, Rachel. [cheers] Yeah. Hrishi, do you know what part of Italy this particular block is from? HRISHI: [laugh] It’s from, I think, a region called “Cost-a-co.” JOSH: That’s right! [audience laughs] Cost-a-co, Italy! [audience laughs] A city that specializes in great bargains on oversized comestibles. [audience laughs] Listen, I’ve done the math. As I mentioned, it’s a 50 pound block of cheese.
