7 Ragga Music: Dis/Respecting Black Women and Dis/Reputable Sexualities Denise Noble We take the girls dem out the darkness, And put the girls dem in the light, That’s why the girls love to hear, Shabba voice ‘pon mic’ (Shabba Ranks, ‘A Wi De Girls Dem Love’, ) Through the blues, black women were able to autonomously work out – as audiences and performers – a working class model of womanhood … it revealed that black women and men, the blues audience, could respond to the vastly different circumstances of the post slavery era with notions of gender and sexuality that were, to an extent, ideologically independent of the middle class cult of ‘true womanhood’. In this sense … the blues was a privileged site in which women were free to assert themselves as sexual beings. (Angela Davies : ) In thinking about my own enjoyment of Ragga music as a Black British woman, I have been intrigued by my own contradictory responses. For as much as I have ‘disapproved’ of some of the overtly sexist and porno- graphic lyrics of some songs, I have also found myself basking in their celebration of Black womanhood. Furthermore, this very public display and celebration of Black sexuality, and particularly Black female sexuality, struck me as very different from other forms with which I had been familiar which represented Black women’s sexuality in my immediate experience of Black culture; an experience that is geographically located in London, but traversed by my familial connections with Jamaica and the USA, travels in Europe and a diasporic consciousness of Blackness that shapes my sense of myself as a Black British woman.

  • Sound System Performances and the Localization of Dancehall in Finland
Sound System Performances and the Localization of Dancehall in Finland Kim Ramstedt Åbo Akademi University, Turku, Finland [email protected] Abstract This study examines how the particular performance practices associated with reggae music have contributed to the localization of dancehall culture in Finland. At the core of this culture lies the concept of the sound system, which, in addition to a DJ, includes a master of ceremonies, or MC, who during a performance, in various ways, interacts with the audience. This article is especially concerned with how Finnish sound systems localize through their performances a particular understanding of reggae as a genre in Finland, and promote reggae as what I define as the dancehall continuum. Theoretically, this study draws on the study of folklore as performance and on sociological genre theory. The empirical material consists of interviews with sound system operators and discussions on an Internet message board. Additionally, a close reading of the written history of reggae is conducted. The study shows that Finnish sound systems do not only act as intermediaries of Jamaican music, but engage the local audience in the creation of a particular adaptation of dancehall culture in Finland. Keywords: dancehall, Finland, Jamaica, localization, performance, reggae Introduction To understand the dance hall system is to understand many of the mysteries of reggae […] If you have once stood in the middle of a sound system when the speakers are blasting the latest dub plate, you understand reggae much more profoundly than listening to it from your home hi fi for years and years. (Kaski and Vuorinen 1984: 5) As Finnish reggae enthusiasts Kaski and Vuorinen (1984) suggest in their influential documentation of dancehall culture in Jamaica, understanding the logic of the sound system performance tells us a lot about reggae music.

Sound System Nation: Jamaica GRAHAM ST JOHN from UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND the floor 1. Photo by author Several years ago, I started gathering interest in mobile initiatives committed to social and political causes in Australia called “sound systems”. The likes of Labrats and other vehicles for the performance of postcolonial desires had been rallying the disaffected to wild and weird frontlines, pursuing, as techno-activist mover and shaker Pete Strong (aka Mashy P) once said, “a sound system for all”. Back then, I’d become excited by these proactive and convivial mobilisations. Responding to local ecological and humanitarian issues, and fed by developments in electronic music culture, a groovement was afoot. Becoming interested in the roots of these developments, one path took me in the direction of the original spinners, the UK’s Spiral Tribe, whose anarchist antics ap- pealed to thousands of tekno-travelers and sonic squatters, attracting the law in the form of a four month and £4 million trial in 1994 that eventually saw Spiral Tribe participants acquitted of the charge of “conspiracy to cause a public nuisance”. The Spirals then kicked off the European and worldwide freetekno movement – whose chief cultural expression is the teknival. Robinson December 2018 The thesis of Denny Alvarez is approved. _____________________________________ George Lipsitz _____________________________________ William I. Robinson _____________________________________ Casey Walsh, Chair December 2018 ACKNOWLEGEMENTS First and foremost, I want to thank the Latinx youth of Southern California who create, attend, perform, dance, and ultimately allow musical spaces of solidarity to exist. This includes but is not limited to those who agreed to the interviews but also to those who have made the effort for these spaces to exist long before I decided to write this thesis. Without their history of creative forms of expression and organization this study would not have been possible. Specifically, I want to thank Tony for being a point of reference, for introducing me to new people, and to potential interviewees. I extend my gratitude to Jonny of SoCal Syndicate who also provided me with invaluable information of the complex forms of organization that are needed for these spaces. It was truly inspiring to witness the amount of work and effort Jonny makes to create and sustain the musical space. I am also grateful to Jesus of Emphatic Entertainment for his insight and for the efforts he makes to extend the Ska scene beyond Los Angeles such as in Las Vegas and the Inland Empire.

  • Versions, Dubs and Riddims: Dub and the Transient Dynamics of Jamaican Music
Versions, Dubs and Riddims: Dub and the Transient Dynamics of Jamaican Music Feature Article Thomas Vendryes Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan (France) Abstract Dub emerged in Jamaica in the early 1970s, and, for a decade, it became a prolific and intensely innovative dimension of Jamaican popular music. Yet, during the mid- 1980s, while dub flourished at the international level, influencing popular music in general, the genre of dub declined in popularity in Jamaica. How could this musical innovation, so evidently associated with Jamaica, expand and develop internationally while at the same time decline in Jamaica itself? In this paper, I explore the modalities and evolution of Jamaican music production and consumption. Through a description of the Jamaican music industry context, with reference to individual artists’ paths and a summary of Jamaican dub production, I show that even as the Jamaican music milieu was highly favorable to the emergence of dub, dub proliferated as a genre only by developing ties to a diaspora of international audiences and practitioners.
