A Message from the President A Message from the President of the Corvette Club of Richmond for June 2016

Fellow CCR Members, The club has a few activities in June, which means there is plenty of opportunity to have your Corvette cleaned and polished for car shows, Vettes and vittles, and the occasional cruise with your best partner. We are ready to let the top down and enjoy a warm weather cruise in our Corvette convertible.

The main event for June is the 20th Annual CCR Roundup at Ironbridge Sports Park, 11400 Iron Bridge Rd, Chester, VA 23831. The hours are from 9AM – 2PM. The event is held rain or shine. Please come out and support this event. Trophies, door prizes, silent auction items, and food on site are offered to atten- dees. You can still register to enter your Corvette on the day of the show for only $25.

On June 5, a charity event “Ride 4 Kids” will occur. Barry Deis is the OD for this special occasion. De- tails are on our website.

Our general membership meeting is on June 10th at Grace Lutheran Church in Chester. Meeting time is 7:30PM, and with warmer weather, many members and guests will arrive 45-30 minutes early for some social time. After all this is a social club. The after meeting Meet & Greet for June will be held at Pietro’s Restaurant.

Hendrick Chevrolet is sponsoring a special car rally on July 16th. All Corvettes are welcomed, and I would expect many members from CCR to attend this event. It will start at 10:00 AM. The plan is for trophies, door prizes and entertainment by the dealership. Hendrick Chevrolet was formerly Dominion Chevrolet, which was the founding sponsor when this club was formed.

Lastly, thanks for all the support over the past few months. The kind words and messages were welcomed by me and Kathy. Let’s have a great summer!

Save the wave! Rick Page 3 June 2016

“SUNDAY WITH THE CLASSICS – CORVETTE, AN AMERICAN LEGEND” By Gregory Lucyk

Did you know the Chevrolet Corvette has English lineage? In designing the first Cor- vette in the early 1950’s, GM styling engineers were urged to adopt the British sports car model, with a two seat cockpit, long nose and short rear deck, much like the popular Jaguar XK120. You would have heard this bit of Corvette history and much more if you were present at “Sunday with the Classics – Corvette, an American Legend,” on a beautiful Sunday after- noon, May 15th at Deep Run Park in Henrico County. Jointly sponsored by CCR and the Hen- rico County Department of Parks and Recreation, more than 70 Corvettes and over 250 people attended this all-Corvette Cruise-In (with one Cadillac XLR), featuring Corvettes from all seven generations, and a multi-media historical and cultural presentation of 60 years of Cor- vette design and accomplishment. CCR members were joined by several visitors from the Colonial Corvette Club in Wil- liamsburg, including Bob Gennaro, President, (’63 split-window resto mod) all showing their Corvettes, and even a few British cars from our friends in the Central Virginia British Car Club. We were also pleased to welcome Scott Weis from Lakeside Auto, Corvette Specialists, who brought his gorgeous 1967 Elkhart Blue convertible, and Andy Young from Zip Products. Andy contributed a well-stocked Zip’s Gift Bag won by one lucky attendee after the presenta- tion. Special thanks go out to Terry Corbin and Dan Raidabaugh for their assistance in park- ing at the site, and to Barry Deis for coordinating the pre-show staging at O’Charley’s, and then leading the Corvette caravan (in precise order of year, from oldest to newest) to Deep Run Park. Thanks also to all the club members who brought their cars out and participated in the presentation. Finally, thanks to Debbie Nolen, Henrico Parks Event Manager, for suggesting the event and providing staff, facilities and refreshments. It was a great day, a successful event, a lot of fun, and I think everyone left having learned a little something new that they didn’t know before, about our Great American Legend – the Chevrolet Corvette.

in the news Recent trademark filing hints at return of Corvette ZR1

Viknesh Vijayenthiran, 23 May, 2016

General Motors Company [NYSE:GM] on May 16 trademarked the ZR1 name with the United States Pat- ent and Trademark Office, supporting rumors the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is set for a return.

GM applies the ZR1 name to its most extreme Cor- vettes (ZR-1 for earlier generations) and so far has used it on the C3, C4 and C6 generations.

The last ZR1 was launched for the 2009 model year and was powered by a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 deliver- ing 638 horsepower and 604 pound-feet of torque.

Recently, it's been reported GM will send off the current C7 Corvette with a model positioned above the Z06. This model is said to be bowing at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show... perhaps badged a ZR1.

There could be even more significance to this car than just its name, though. It may just end up as the last front-engined Corvette because the C8 generation is thought to be switching to a mid-engined layout.

Note, the recent trademark filing alternatively could simply be a way for GM to protect a storied name. An earlier trademark filing for ZR1 had expired in 2001.

By Barry Roper, NCM Ambassador/Lifetime Member

The annual Michelin Bash at the National Corvette Museum is just settling into the history books but the intrepid twelve Corvette lovers and CCR groupies making the journey know that the road trip, activities, shared meals, and camaraderie will remain fond memories for years. Even before we departed, we 'enjoyed' a review of Virginia's requirement for display- ing both front and rear license plates from VA Trooper Woodward after he saw us congregated at the Broad Street WAWA. His coffee stop netted us a humorous discussion with no cita- tions. Thereafter, the dozen participants in six cars departed April 26th on the six-day, 1320 mile round trip to Bowling Green, KY, with the first night spent In Charleston, WV.

Only three of our group had visited the Museum previously so anticipation was high for the gathering that included a Corvette Assembly Plant tour, first viewing of the 2017 vehicles, seminars, workshops, laps at the NCM Motorsports Park, and inspection of the infamous Sinkhole, now sealed but visible as part of the Museum tour. The restored Corvettes as well as the remains of those deemed not repairable were available for inspection.

Those making the six day pilgrimage to the NCM included OD's Kirby and Marcie Montgom- ery, Barry Roper, Mike Phaup, Dean and Cheryl Maddern, Pete and Olivia Garland, Peter and Linda Dunn, and Mike and Gayle Gill. The Bash is an annual event and a very enjoyable road trip. Consider now setting aside a few days next April to join the 2017 entourage to the NCM! Page 18 June 2016

Final entry list: Corvette Racing heads U.S. contingent for 24 Hours of Le Mans May 18, 2016

60-car entry list revealed for June 18-19 sports-car classic

The Automobile Club de l’Ouest announced the 60-car, 180-driver final entry list for the 24 Hours of Le Mans on Wednesday. Cor- vette Racing returns to defend its LM GTE Pro victory with a two-car entry driven by six IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Champion- ship regulars, including 2015 winners Oliver Gavin, Tommy Milner and Jordan Taylor in the No. 64 Corvette C7.R. Milner feels that the test day on Sunday, June 5 will be a key step toward defending the team’s Le Mans title.

The United States leads the entry list for the prestigious endurance race on June 18-19 with 12 cars, 10 of which compete in the WeatherTech Championship.

“This year, especially the test day, is more important than it has been in years past,” Milner said. “We have a new rules package for GTE Pro. Now we go there with a car that will have quite a bit more downforce potentially. For us, having a good test with no me- chanical issues makes race week that much less stressful.

“You can focus on the details of the race, getting all three drivers cycled through and not worrying about finding extra speed. That’s what we had last year. We had a Corvette that was comfortable and fast. Jordan came in and was on-pace right away, which is obvi- ously good. Going back there with the same driver lineup leaves us feeling pretty confident that we can achieve that again.”

Ford Chip Ganassi Racing will field four Ford GTs, running its two-car WeatherTech Championship team in addition to its two-car British-based team that competes in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). Also in GTE Pro, Risi Competizione will race its Ferrari 488 GTE, while the German-based Porsche Motorsport team will use six drivers that compete in the WeatherTech Cham- pionship, including 2015 GT Le Mans (GTLM) champion Patrick Pilet and 2015 Le Mans overall winners Nick Tandy and Earl Bamber.

The LMP2 entry includes full-time WeatherTech Championship competitors Michael Shank Racing -- making its Le Mans debut -- in addition to two cars from Extreme Speed Motorsports and an entry from the Krohn Racing team that races in the Tequila Patrón North American Endurance Cup. Drivers in the class include 2016 Rolex 24 at Daytona and Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring over- all winners Ed Brown, , and ; 2016 Rolex 24 pole winner Mikhail Aleshin; and WeatherTech Championship regulars , Ben Keating, Jeroen Bleekemolen, Marc Goossens, and Ozz Negri.

Scuderia Corsa will field a Ferrari 458 Italia, bringing back former team drivers and 2015 GT Daytona (GTD) champions Bill Sweedler and Townsend Bell. Also, the WeatherTech Championship Alex Job Racing team is partnering with German Proton Com- petition in entering a WeatherTech-sponsored Porsche for IMSA regulars Cooper MacNeil, Leh Keen and Marc Miller.

Current GTD points co-leader Chris- tina Nielsen will drive a Ferrari for Denmark-based Formula Racing. She is one of two women on the Le Mans entry list, joining Ines Taittinger from France. Page 19 June 2016 Tech Tips Corvette Tech Tips SUN ‘N FUN VETTES, INC.

C1-C3 Tips In this day and age with electronic ignition systems, we forget the older points/condenser ignition systems need to have a tune-up every 10,000 miles. The points wear out that fast!

C4 Tips 1988-96 headlight door motors can usually be repaired. This is a lot less costly than buying new motor assemblies.

Weather strips on the C4 are prone to crack/deteriorate quickly. If you use the GM silicone grease #12345579 (sparingly) on them they will last longer.

LT1 (92-96) engines hold 4.5 quarts of oil with filter change (1992 manuals incorrectly stated 5 quarts). Correct AC filter used is PF52 (PF51 discontinued).

When first driving the car after starting, at 4 mph, you will hear the ABS pump cycle for a self-test. This is normal.

C5 Tips Early C5's (97-01) have a PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system design that tends to allow oil to get into the intake, valves, and piston areas. Sometimes this will cause detonation (pinging). It is important to not overfill the crankcase when changing the oil. Use 6.5 quarts of oil (Mobil-1 or equivalent synthetic) maximum. Also, an occasional induction cleaning can help.

All Corvettes If your heater or A/C air flow only comes out the defroster vent, you probably have a vacuum leak somewhere in the system.

Since 1982, Corvettes have had electronic engine management controls. You know, the thing that turns on the “Service engine” light. Most folks know that you can usually turn the light off by disconnecting the battery for 5-10 minutes. Be aware that the computer stores an error code that can help in diagnosing the problem and clearing it without extracting it may delay repair of the problem. Auto technicians use a special “scan tool” to extract the error code to facilitate repairs.

If you have a fully charged battery, it should be able to start your Corvette for 30 days without charging. If not, there is some sort of unusual drain on the battery from something in the electrical system or the battery is bad.

Automatic transmissions fail mostly because the fluid has not been changed at least every 36,000 miles. City driving is considered “severe duty” on auto transmissions (especially with the high temperatures here in Florida).

The cooling system needs to be serviced at least every two years with the “green stuff” and at least every 5 years with the “red stuff”. Otherwise, rust will form in the engine (C4 and previous) and water pumps can fail.

Not sure which differential (rear end) ratio your Vette has? Check the rpm in 4th gear at 70mph: 3800 rpm = 4.11 gears 3200 rpm = 3.70 gears 3100 rpm = 3.55 gears 2500 rpm = 3.08 gears

“SM” Motor Oils Since the introduction of "SM" motor oils, the zinc / phosphorus content has been too low for engines with "flat tappet lifters". This applies to 1953-1986 Corvettes (and all ZR-1 Corvettes from 1990-1995). New cars all have "roller lifters" which put much less wear on a cam and are not affected.

Shell Rotella T 30 wt or 10W 30 in these older Corvettes is recommended, or one can use any other brand-name oil whose primary API rating is CI-4 or CJ-4; oils with that API rating contain adequate amounts of phosphorus and zinc (1100-1200 ppm) to protect any OEM valve train. Do NOT use any oil whose primary API rating is "SM" - their phosphorus / zinc levels have been reduced to a maximum of 800 ppm to protect cata- lytic converters.

If you only drive your Corvette a few hundred miles a year, you won't live long enough to see the difference in cam wear. If you have a perform- ance high lift cam, you do need the 1100+ ppm phosphorus/zinc oils. Page 20 June 2016 The CCR Store Page 21 June 2016
