SOAP MAKING with Argan

by Amanda Gail, LovinSoap.com Soap Making With Argan Oil

Argan oil was the hot topic in my soap making Facebook Group, Saponfication Nation this past week, so I wanted to simply share some of my favorite soap recipes using this wonderful oil. A couple of years ago I was on an argan oil kick. I put it in everything! I love this oil and customers loved it just as much.

Argan oil is the oil produced from the kernels of the argan tree ( spinosa L.). Workers (usually women’s co-ops) still process the kernels by hand to this day. Argan kernels are ground and pressed to obtain the oil.

Argan oil contains tocopherols (vitamin E), phenols, carotenes and squalene. Depending on how it produced, it is thought to have a longer shelf-life than .

Traditionally it has been used by Moroccans as a cosmetic oil for skin and hair. It has anti-inflammatory properties. It is wonderful for flaky skin and for moisturizing the hair. Keep a bottle of pure argan oil on hand to use directly on your skin and hair.

Here are some of my favorite recipes from my argan oil phase of research and soap making. The soap recipes are 900 gram oil batches and fit in a 10” silicone loaf mold from Bramble Berry (except for the salt bars). Use individual cavity molds to make the salt bars.

I like to use 5-10% argan oil in soap.

You can turn this recipe into a lip balm, body balm, nail balm...etc. If you want to harden the recipe, use more beeswax. If you want to soften the recipe, use more argan or coconut oil. Start with small batches. You can always melt to add more wax or liquid oil to change the hardness. Have fun experimenting!

Use essential oil at 1-3% of the recipe. If you are making lip balm, make sure that your essential oil or fragrance oil can be used on lips.
