Broughton House & Garden 12 High Street, in Kirkcudbright town centre. DG6 4JX Broughton House was the home of Scottish artist E A Hornel, best known as one of the ‘Glasgow Boys’. This fine 18th-century town house was bought by Hornel in 1901 and became his home and studio. Newhailes In Musselburgh, off Newhailes Road (A6095). EH21 6RY This fine house, set in a fascinating 18th-century designed landscape, is something of a time capsule. Newhailes contains a fine collection of paintings, including portraits by Medina and Ramsay, and its library played host to many famous figures of the Scottish Enlightenment. Much original decoration and furnishing has survived intact, though worn, and Inveresk Lodge Garden visitors will see a mellow rather than immaculately restored house.
