2014

Oct "The Art of Japanese Urushi" (speech given at the Japan Society NYC). I travelled to New York at the invitation of Ninohe City, Iwate Prefecture to promote Joboji urushi through a series of events and lectures. May Invited to Hawaii as "artist in residence" to the East West Center where I gave various gallery talks and lectures at their gallery. I also gave lectures and taught workshops at the Honolulu Museum of Art.

2013

Nov I acted as a consultant intermediary for the East West Center to produce the "Living Lacquer Traditions" exhibition at their gallery in Honolulu, Hawaii. April Embarked on a range of educational activities including lessons for foreign students, lectures, events and tours involving Kanazawa University and the government run "Cool Japan" programme.

Oct Collection exhibited at Jinai Machi Art and Craft Fair, Osaka April Entered Ishikawa Kenritsu Wajima Shitsugei Kenshujo as a postgraduate student in the specialist Futsuka course in 'Kyushitsu' which includes all aspects of lacquering, carpentry and kanshitsu. I was fortunate enough to study with the Living National Treasures Isao Onishi, Ryozo Kawagita, and Kunie Komori.

1995

March Graduated Futsuka 1992

April After graduating the foundation course I followed on to the specialist 'Futsuka' course to study all forms of decorative techniques in maki-e. This course also included carpentry, technical drawing, design, watercolor painting, tea ceremony and flower arrangement. During this course I had the honour to study with the Living National Treasures Yoshikuni Taguchi , Naoji Terai, Shogyo Oba, Mashiki Masamura and Keishiro Shioda.

1990

April Entered Ishikawa Kenritsu Wajima Shitsugei Kenshujo on the foundation 'Senshuka' course which included lacquering techniques, decorative techniques in maki-e and chinkin (with Living National Treasure Fumio Mae). March Received a scholarship from the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation to study urushi.

1984

June After studying art and design in England I came to Japan to study urushi (lacquer) art. In preparation for this I studied various aspects of Japanese art such as ink painting (sumi-e), calligraphy, flower arrangement, kimono and seal carving (inkan).
