Make the Commitment BY JOHN DELAVAN, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Volume 49, Number 4 | April 2011 don’t want to alarm you. But I feel I should alert you that, by the time you read this, 2011 will be roughly a quarter over. PUBLISHER Matt Sanderson Yes, more than three months have passed since 2010 ended. [email protected] And, if you’re like me, you’re thinking, “It’s April already? 312.673.5822 ISeriously –April?! Where did the time go?” EDITOR-IN-CHIEF John Delavan [email protected] Sure, the word “April” conjures up some good thoughts, such 312.673.4825 as the start of baseball season (Go Cubs!) and the putting away ART DIRECTOR William Wargo [email protected] (hopefully) of winter coats for a few months. But April can also 312.673.4991 bring with it some harsh realizations. Manufacturers are accustomed to seeing distributors largely as the top 15 percent and then “everybody else.” This is a great opportunity for distributors to remind them that it’s in the remaining 85 percent that they will find the new distributors who will offer the greatest potential for growth.

After all, as Doehler of the Consortium Companies points out, “[All of these training issues aside,] our ROI on running educational sessions has been huge. Why? Because it takes only a few distributors landing ongoing projects to generate significant, profitable revenue for both of us.”

Finding these distributors and developing a strategy for cultivating them is the challenge for manufacturers going forward. Granted, distributors might ask a lot of hard questions along the way. They might challenge manufacturers to provide greater depth of training than they had anticipated. But you never know. If they are astute enough to ask the hard questions, they just might be the kinds of distributors manufacturers are looking for. PS

Sometimes large organizations have game suites, andand thethe programs can be personalized for that particular corporation in the suite.

Anyone with an aversion for word problems in math classes can appreciate the text of the Tungsten Creative ad, which reads, “A hockey puck weighing 5.8 oz. is resting exactly 42 ft. from the goal line. A 195-pound right winger skates directly toward the puck at 9 mph and strikes it, causing the puck to reach 94 mph before deflecting off an opposing defenseman’s skate at a 17 degree angle and traveling past the goalie on his blocker side. What is the final speed of the puck upon contact with the back of the net? Who cares. We scored.”

The Results The programs are still digitally runun and based upon what they need per game, not a guess based on the whole season. When an NBA development team came to town, ththey ordered a similar program and were impressed that there were no leftover programs at the end of the season.

Initially, team officials were concerned about how they could afford a digitally printed program. By eliminating obsolescence (and thus unsold programs) and making the programs smaller, the Otters saved money on their printing budget while increasing sales. That’s a win for everyone.

“When it’s worked right, it’s a great solution for a program,” Mehl said. “We’ve always had the philosophy of if we’re going to do something for you, we want it to work!” PS Dispatch Printing and Tungsten Creative suggested to the Erie Otters a digitally printed color program that could be updated before each game.
