(16 Starters) Overseas Expert Column by Naohiro Goda Both LUCKY NINE and GREEN BIRDIE ran as well as I expected in the G2 Centaur Stakes at Hanshin on 11 September. Both came out of the race well and moved from Hanshin to Nakayama Racecourse on 14 September. It was an uneventful trip even though it took nine hours and five minutes by horse van, and they have settled very well in the barn area at Nakayama Racecourse. LUCKY NINE, second in the Centaur Stakes, and GREEN BIRDIE, who was demoted from 4th in the same race to 14th in the stewards’ room, were lightly breezed for 800m on the grass course at Nakayama on 23 September. They were given another breeze on the same course on 27 September. Both Hong Kong raiders look to be happy and are enjoying their time in Japan, and I believe they are ready to produce their best form on 2 October.

When the duo last met, Viadera was just able to get to the line first after Blowout set a torrid pace in the Sept. 25 GIII Noble Damsel S. at Belmont Park. Blowout zipped out to the early lead at Del Mar Sunday, was clear around the first turn and completed the opening quarter in :22.62, but Juddmonte homebred Juliet Foxtrot (GB) (Dansili {GB}) surged to the lead midway down the backstretch and was two lengths in front of Blowout through a half in :45.63 as Viadera remained unhurried near the back of the pack. • Subject: Results of the 51St Takamatsunomiya Kinen (G1
FROM: Media & Publicity Department, THE JAPAN RACING ASSOCIATION (JRA) DATE: March 28, 2021 SUBJECT: RESULTS OF THE 51ST TAKAMATSUNOMIYA KINEN (G1) The Takamatsunomiya Kinen, one of two G1 championship events for sprinters held by the JRA together with the Sprinters Stakes (G1, 1,200m) in autumn, was formerly named Takamatsunomiya Cup in honor of Prince Takamatsunomiya who presented the trophy to the winner in 1971. The race was shortened from 2,000 meters to 1,200 meters and granted a Japanese G1 status in 1996, then renamed Takamatsunomiya Kinen in 1998. The first of flat turf G1 events held annually, the race was temporarily shifted to Hanshin Racecourse in 2011 and was contested over the newly renovated track back at Chukyo in the following year with added challenges of an uphill and a longer homestretch exceeding 400 meters. The Takamatsunomiya Kinen was designated an international race in 2001 and welcomed its first two foreign participants—Disturbingthepeace (13th) and Echo Eddie (17th)—from the U.S. in 2003 and was part of the Global Sprint Challenge, the international championship series for sprinters between 2011 and 2017. Aerovelocity (NZ, by Pins) from Hong Kong became the first foreign horse to win the race in 2015 and Blizzard (AUS, by Starcraft), also from Hong Kong, finished fifth in 2018. • Gentildonna Becomes First 3Yo Filly to Claim Horse of the Year Title
FROM: Yuji Kinoshita General Manager, Media & Publicity Department, The Japan Racing Association (JRA) DATE: January 28, 2013 GENTILDONNA BECOMES FIRST 3YO FILLY TO CLAIM HORSE OF THE YEAR TITLE The Japan Racing Association today will present its 2012 Horse of the Year title to Gentildonna, who turned in a stellar season as the first three-year-old filly to capture the Japan Cup and only the fourth filly in JRA history to sweep the Triple Crown for fillies. The annual JRA Awards, which will be handed out in a ceremony today, recognize horses, trainers, jockeys and thoroughbred-related individuals and organizations for accomplished performances or achievements in the 2012 season. Gentildonna scored her historic victory in the Japan Cup against one of the toughest-ever fields, including Solemia and 2011 Horse of the Year Orfevre, who had recently taken first and second, respectively, in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. The Deep Impact filly, who dominated judging by receiving 256 out of 289 votes, is the first three-year-old filly to win the JRA’s highest honor. She also was the unanimous pick for Best Three-Year-Old Filly. Gentildonna and jockey Yasunari Iwata Orfevre, with a sole G1 triumph in the Takarazuka Kinen after winning four G1 titles in the previous season, earned high marks for his runner-up effort in the Arc to collect 273 votes for Best Older Colt or Horse. Gold Ship, who claimed two of the season’s three-year-old classics and bested a field of senior G1 runners in the Arima Kinen, was the unanimous pick for Best Three-Year-Old Colt.

  • Triple Crown Orfevre Named Horse of the Year
FROM: Yuji Kinoshita General Manager, Media & Publicity Department, The Japan Racing Association (JRA) DATE: January 23, 2012 TRIPLE CROWN ORFEVRE NAMED HORSE OF THE YEAR Triple Crown-winner Orfevre (JPN) claimed the Japan Racing Association (JRA)’s 2011 Horse of the Year title for several outstanding achievements during his three-year-old season, coming just one vote short of becoming the fourth unanimous pick for the JRA’s highest honor. The son of Stay Gold garnered the highest number of votes for any winner of this prestigious award in the last 10 years, and also distinguished himself as the unanimous choice for the Best Three-Year-Old Colt award. Nine out of 10 award-recipients won decisively with at least 94 percent (268) of total votes (285). The award for Best Older Colt or Horse, however, was a tight contest between Tosen Jordan (JPN), who claimed the Tenno Sho (Autumn) (G1) in record time and finished second in the Japan Cup (G1), and Victoire Pisa (JPN), the first Japanese thoroughbred to capture the Dubai World Cup (G1), the selection eventually going to Victoire Pisa by 25 votes for his second JRA Award after being named Best Three-Year-Old Colt in 2010. Buena Vista (JPN) capped off a highly decorated career with 277 votes for Best Older Filly or Mare, leaving her with no less than five JRA Awards, including at least one each in four straight seasons. Orfevre and trainer Victoire Pisa and trainer Buena Vista and jockey Yasutoshi Ikee (horse’s left) Katsuhiko Sumii (far left, grey suit) Yasunari Iwata Katsuhiko Sumii, a familiar face among recent JRA Award winners, captured his first Best Trainer (Races Won) and third-consecutive Best Trainer (Training Technique).
