It was established under the Local Democracy (Wales) Act 2013 with the main purpose of publishing a programme of work which keeps under review the electoral arrangements for the 22 principal councils. The Commission makes electoral review recommendations, which it feels are in the interest of effective and convenient local government. This review has been conducted as a result of the former Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Local Government’s Written Statement of 23 June 2016 as part of an all Wales review programme for the 2022 local government elections. © Crown copyright and database rights [2019] OS [100047875] Summary of our Recommendations: The Commission recommends a council of 40 members, a reduction from the present 44 members. The Commission recommends a change to the arrangement of electoral wards that will achieve a substantial improvement in the level of electoral parity across the County Borough of Torfaen. The Commission recommends 18 electoral wards, a reduction from 24 existing wards. The largest under-representation is recommended to be 22% above the proposed county average in Croesyceiliog and Upper Cwmbran. The largest over-representation is recommended to be 15% below the proposed county average in Llantarnam and Pontnewynydd and Snatchwood. The Commission recommends 14 multi-member wards in the County consisting of six two -member electoral wards and, eight three-member electoral wards. The Commission recommends no change to 11 electoral wards. The Commis sion recommends two electoral wards within the county which combine a part of a warded community, along with its neighbouring community. These community splits are present within the Communities of Cwmbran Central and Llanyrafon. It now falls to the Welsh Gov ernment, if it thinks fit, to give effect to these final recommendations either as submitted, or with modifications.     Usk Valley Working Gundog Club ID 718 Newsletter 2016 Chairman’s Report Dear Members, I am very pleased to inform you 2015 was another busy year for the Committee once again they organised a number of very successful and enjoyable events. You will find full details of all of the events held during 2015 within the Secretaries reports including the successes of our Retriever and Spaniel Teams at the Sherborne Country Fayre and our first HPR Working Test. During the summer the Club were invited to put on Gundog Displays at three Country Shows, Monmouth, Llangyndir, and Usk and the Club was invited to provide a demonstration at Greenmeadow Community Farm. Thank you very much to everyone who gave up their time to participate on the day and for making them all a great success. Thank you to Johnny Morris, Julian Price and Tyrone Axford for taking on the task of putting together the well-received displays. The Training Classes' are going from strength to strength and judging by the positive feedback received they were enjoyed by all, thank you Alan, Glyn and Tyrone. Organisation of the 2016 schedule has already started full details are published in this newsletter, on our Website and this year on our Facebook page.     Community Langstone Record No. 2903 Name Thatched Cottage Grade II Date Listed 3/3/52 Post Code Last Amended 12/19/95 Street Number Street Side Grid Ref 336900 188900 Formerly Listed As Location Located approx 2km S of Langstone village, and approx 1km N of Llanwern village. Set on the E side of the road within 2.5 acres of garden. History Cottage built in 1907 in vernacular style. Said to be by Lutyens and his assistant Oswald Milne. The house was commissioned by Lord Rhondda owner of nearby Pencoed Castle for his niece, Charlotte Haig, daughter of Earl Haig. The gardens are said to have been laid out by Gertrude Jekyll, under restoration at the time of survey (September 1995) Exterior Two storey cottage. Reed thatched roof with decorative blocked ridge. Elevations of coursed rubble with some random use of terracotta tile. "E" plan. Picturesque cottage composition, multi-paned casement windows and painted planked timber doors. Two axial ashlar chimneys, one lateral, large red brick rising from ashlar base adjoining front door with pots. Crest on lateral chimney stack adjacent to front door presumably that of the Haig family. The second chimney is constructed of coursed rubble with pots. To the left hand side of the front elevation there is a catslide roof with a small pair of casements and boarded door. Design incorporates gabled and hipped ranges and pent roof dormers. Interior Simple cottage interior, recently modernised. Planked doors to ground floor. Large "inglenook" style fireplace with oak mantle shelf to principal reception room, with simple plaster border to ceiling.

    Abersychan World War One Roll of Honour This Roll of Honour was produced by volunteers from Coleg Gwent, as part of the Heritage Lottery Funded Sharing Private O’Brien project, using several sources including: Pontypool and Abersychan War Memorial unveiling ceremony pamphlet (D2824/6), the Free Press of Monmouthshire and the accompanying index of deaths compiled by the Friends of Gwent Record Office, the Gwent Roll of Honour compiled by Gwent Family History Society, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website, and service records, census, births, marriages and deaths etc. available on Find My Past and Ancestry Library. If you know of anybody from Abersychan and area who died in WWI and who does not appear on the list please let us know. Allen, Alfred Joseph: Ordinary Seaman, J 86305, Royal Navy. Alfred was born in 1899 at Talywain and died on 18 April 1918 at Plymouth Royal Naval Hospital from cerebro spinal fever while serving on HMS Vivid I shore training establishment. He was the son of Emily of 7 Woodlands, Talywain. Alfred was a member of St. Francis Roman Catholic Church and worked as a collier at Lower Varteg Colliery before enlisting in the Royal Navy in March 1918. He is buried at Plymouth, Devonport and Stonehouse Cemetary, Plymouth and commemorated on Pontypool and Abersychan Memorial Gates. Badman, Ralph Ivor: Munition worker. Ralph was born in 1893 at Varteg and killed while on munition work in 1914 in Bedwellty district. He was the son of Charles Henry and Olivia Tamar Badman of Salisbury Terrace, Varteg, and brother of Raymond Clarence (see below), Wilfred, Ernest, and Francis.
