The Grand Master of the Order, the V ∴∴∴Ills ∴∴∴Bro ∴∴∴ Njördur P. NJARDVÍK gave his inaugural address to all members of the Convention: INAUGURAL ADDRESS BY THE GRAND MASTER OF THE ORDER Dear Sisters and Brothers in your degrees and qualities: Firstly, I would like to welcome you all to the 13th International Convention. This Convention is the parliament of our Order, where elected delegates will take important decisions for the future of our beloved Order, the International Order of Co-Freemasonry "Le Droit Humain". I urge all delegates to consider very carefully how they will vote, especially on amendments to the International Constitution, and to bear in mind at all times the welfare of our Order as a whole, beyond the bounds of national interest or pride. In our Order we cannot be nationalists, as we have no nation. We are a microcosm of humanity, which we serve unconditionally through our timeless ideals, which must be adapted to an ever-changing world. Glorification of a single nation or a single culture breeds feelings of superiority contrary to our Masonic principles. In an international Masonic Order like ours there can be no place for glorification, except glorification of work, glorification of service to humanity. At the same time the International Convention is a unique meeting place, providing a unique opportunity to meet Sisters and Brothers from all over the world and to experience together how our ideals transcend cultural, philosophical and religious barriers, and unite us in the conviction that humanity is but one family, with the same essential needs, the same aspirations, the same dreams of peace and prosperity for one and all, the same desire to achieve the highest possible degree of moral, intellectual and spiritual development for all people. Minutes of the International Convention 2007 (C ∴E∴) Page 5 of 82 I hope you will all seize this opportunity of becoming better acquainted with your Sisters and Brothers in an atmosphere of mutual respect, and sense the fraternal bond between us. Generations come and generations go, but the earth remains for ever, Ecclesiastes tells us, and so it is with us in the service of our Order. There is a time to come and a time to go. After 10 years in the office of Grand Master it is now time for me to leave. It was my proposal that the Grand Master’s term of office be limited to a maximum of two consecutive periods and that of members of the Supreme Council to three. No one should hold the same office too long. We must realize that each generation can only do so much, and we should be happy to make way for the next generation, which will adapt our ideals to new conditions in a new era, a new century. It was the former Most Puissant Grand Commander of the French Federation, the Very Illustrious Sister Elise ROUET, who asked me to stand as a candidate for the office of Grand Master. Her idea was to underline the need to strengthen the international character of our Order. That is precisely what I have endeavoured to do, though it is hard, especially for me, to see what has actually been achieved. More generally, it is no easy matter to judge how successful any of our work may have been. It is like trying to evaluate a school: its results are invisible and cannot be measured. One possible way would be to try and look at the situation our Order was in 10 years ago and compare it to that of the present day, though even that is very difficult to do with any certainty. I am proud to be able to say that not only am I the first Grand Master to visit Africa, I am the first Grand Master to have visited all the Federations, all but one Jurisdiction, and several Pioneer Lodges.

It is an exceptional moment of coming together, enabling us to experience universal brotherhood first hand. This is what our founders wished for. In creating our Order, by way of the Declaration of Principles and the first three Articles of our International Con- stitution, they expressed the desire that our meetings and exchanges should take place marked not by religious, ethnic or national identity but simply by our common humanity.

THE ANCIENT* LANDMARKS OF THE ORDER *Throughout I have used the spelling “Ancient” rather than “Antient.” W.BRO. A.D. MATTHEWS PPGReg Issue 4: - 9th April 2013 Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set. Proverbs 22: 28 What are the Landmarks? How many are there and where are they defined? I turn for guidance, first to the Book of Constitutions of the United Grand Lodge of England, which states in: Rule 4: “The Grand Lodge possesses the supreme super-intending authority and alone has the inherent power of enacting laws and regulations for the government of the Craft, and of altering, repealing and abrogating them, always taking care that the ancient Landmarks of the Order be preserved.” 1 Rule 55 “If it shall appear to the Grand Master that any proposed resolution contains anything contrary to the ancient Landmarks of the Order, he may refuse to permit the same to be discussed.” 1 Rule 111 “Every Master Elect, before being passed to the Chair, shall solemnly pledge himself to preserve the Landmarks of the Order.” 1 Rule 125(b) “No Brother who is not subject to the Grand Lodge shall be admitted unless his Certificate shows that he has been initiated according to the ancient rites and ceremonies in a Lodge belonging to a Grand Lodge professing belief in TGAOTU…… nor unless he himself shall acknowledge that this belief is an essential Landmark of the Order ……..” 1 These are the only references to the Ancient Landmarks in the Book of Constitutions and there is no defined list therein, so all we can determine so far is that a professed belief in TGAOTU is an Ancient Landmark of the Order and the only one specifically defined as such by the United Grand Lodge of England.

  • In This Brochure We Present a Brief Overview of When and How Freemasonry for Men and Women Began
WHEN AND HOW DID FREEMASONRY FOR MEN AND WOMEN BEGIN? In this brochure we present a brief overview of when and how Freemasonry for Men and Women began. Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest non-religious fraternal societies. It is a society concerned with moral and spiritual development. Its members explore this development through a series of ritual dramas, symbols and allegories. There is no actual proof or historical fact indicating the origins of Freemasonry. But it appears to be accepted that Freemasonry as we know it today was born out of the Master builders of cathedrals and other large buildings in the Middle Ages. Because of their skills and the need for numbers of them to gather together to build complex structures, they were free to travel from one building site to another. To identify one another and protect their skills they formed their own Guilds and eventually became known as Freemasons. WOMEN IN FREEMASONRY There is written evidence that influential women were initiated into the precursors of Freemasonry from as early as 1256. But these were predominantly men only organisations. The tradition of the involvement of women was perpetuated when a woman named Marie Deraismes, was initiated into a French masculine Lodge called, appropriately, “Les Libres Penseurs” (The Free Thinkers) in 1882. A year later, in 1893, Dr. Georges Martin, a French Senator and advocate of equal rights for women, joined Marie Deraismes along with other male Masons in founding La Respectable Loge, Le Droit Humain, Maconnerie Mixte in Paris. The International Order of Freemasonry for Men and Women, LE DROIT HUMAIN (originally translated as Co-Freemasonry or Universal Co-Freemasonry) traces its origin to this foundation.

  • Royal Order of Scotland
A History of The Royal Order of Scotland Taken From: “ High-Ways and Bi-Ways of Freemasonry” 1924 MOST of the authentic information regarding the establishment and history of this ancient and distinguished Order has been collected by those indefatigable Masonic historians, Brothers Hughan, Gould and Murray Lyon, and, during the year 1910, the various facts available were collated and put together in a very readable form by Brother E. Fox Thomas, the Provincial Grand Master of the Order for Yorkshire, in the pages of the Freemason. The fact that, as regards authentic documentary records, the Royal Order of Scotland can claim seniority over every other Masonic system - the Craft only excepted - is alone sufficient to invest it with the highest degree of interest, but, as a matter of fact, its antiquity is only one of its many claims to our respect and veneration. At one time it was considered right to ascribe a French origin to the Royal Order, but now the accepted opinion is that it is essentially British. On any other assumption it would be difficult to account for the Ritual which is in a rough but attractive doggere verse, undoubtedly early even if here and there it betrays signs of more recent modification. The Legends and all their associations are purely Scottish, but curiously the earliest authentic records have to do with England not Scotland, and the Ritual contains but little indication of any Scottish dialect. There are two degrees: I. Brother of Herridom (H:.R:.D:.M:.) II. Knight of the Rosey Cross (R:.S:.Y:.C:.S:.) The former is conferred in a chapter of H:.R:.D:.M:.
