Mantle’s numbers jump off his Hall of Fame plaque: 536 home runs. Winner of the league homer title and slugging crown four times. Collected 2,415 hits. Batted .300 or over in ten individual seasons with a top average of .365 in 1957. Voted A.L. Most Valuable Player in three different seasons, 1956-57-62. Named on 20 A.L. All-Star Teams. Mantle was the linchpin of the Yankee’s epic dynasty during the 1950s and early 1960. He collected seven World Championship rings while hitting a record 18 World Series home runs. He symbolized the 1950s— a period of American exceptionalism, peace and prosperity, and the golden era of baseball when all three New York teams dominated the country’s national pastime. His cards and memorabilia command some of the highest prices of any sports collectibles. Starting in the late 1970s, Mantle ushered in the sports collectible craze through his autograph appearances and the soaring value of his early baseball cards. THE OFFERING The 1953 Topps set is one of the most condition sensitive sets because of its design. The notable red and black name plates are prone to chipping and wear. The smallest nicks and dings expose the white paper stock beneath. Most 1953 Topps have borders favoring one side. Print standards were inferior back then, so the centering seldom achieves 50/50 proportion that would yield a perfect grade as this one has. The print focus and registration on this card is flawless, too. There is no speckling in the background blue sky, as is often the case with this card. The card’s overall freshness and gloss makes it appear as though it was just pulled from a pack, showing no wear to the edges and four perfect corners. It has been perfectly preserved since the year it was made. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Terry Melia – 949-831-3700, [email protected] HONUS WAGNER 1909-11 T206 CARD AND HIS PERSONAL SAFE TO BE AUCTIONED AS PART OF SCP AUCTIONS’ ‘FALL PREMIER’ Auction of Wagner’s T206 Card and Safe Winds Down Saturday, Dec. 6 Laguna Niguel, Calif. (Dec. 3, 2014) – SCP Auctions’ “Fall Premier” online auction ends this Saturday, Dec. 6, at www.scpauctions.com. It features more than 1,150 lots including the coveted Chesapeake Honus Wagner 1909-11 T206 card and a small but highly significant group of Jackie Robinson related memorabilia including his spectacular Hillerich & Bradsby Model S100 ash bat, one of only two Robinson game-used bats that can be definitively documented as having been used during his 1949 MVP season. Also included is Wagner’s personal safe which was part of Wagner's estate collection received directly from the Wagner family's home in Carnegie, Pa. and sold by SCP Auctions in 2003 on behalf of Leslie Blair Wagner (Honus’s granddaughter). Can you imagine a more ideal place to store your prized T206 Honus Wagner card? For decades, Honus Wagner himself stored some his most important possessions in this floor safe. The safe, manufactured specially for Wagner by the F.L. Norton Safe Co. of Pittsburgh, Pa., dates from the turn-of-the-century. Its dimensions are 25" high by 16"wide by 17"deep and weighs about 250 pounds. Wagner's name "J.H. Wagner" is stenciled across to top in gold paint. A decorative border is stenciled around the perimeter of the door, which also bears the manufacturers markings below the dial.

  • A Review of the Post-WWII Baseball Card Industry
A Review of the Post-WWII Baseball Card Industry Artie Zillante University of North Carolina Charlotte November 25th,2007 1Introduction If the attempt by The Upper Deck Company (Upper Deck) to purchase The Topps Company, Inc. (Topps) is successful, the baseball card industry will have come full circle in under 30 years. A legal ruling broke the Topps monopoly in the industry in 1981, but by 2007 the industry had experienced a boom and bust cycle1 that led to the entry and exit of a number of firms, numerous innovations, and changes in competitive practices. If successful, Upper Deck’s purchase of Topps will return the industry to a monopoly. The goal of this piece is to look at how secondary market forces have shaped primary market behavior in two ways. First, in the innovations produced as competition between manufacturers intensified. Second, in the change in how manufacturers competed. Traditional economic analysis assumes competition along one dimension, such as Cournot quantity competition or Bertrand price competition, with little consideration of whether or not the choice of competitive strategy changes. Thus, the focus will be on the suggested retail price (SRP) of cards as well as on the timing of product releases in the industry. Baseballcardshaveundergonedramaticchangesinthepasthalfcenturyastheindustryandthehobby have matured, but the last 20 years have provided a dramatic change in the types of products being produced. Prior to World War II, baseball cards were primarily used as premiums or advertising tools for tobacco and candy products. Information on the use of baseball cards as advertising tools in the tobacco and candy industries prior to World War II can be obtained from a number of different sources, including Kirk (1990) and most of the annual comprehensive baseball card price guides produced by Beckett publishing.

A HISTORY OF TOBACCO TRADING CARDS From 1880s Bathing Beauties to 1990s Satire Alan Blum Doctors Ought to Care (DOC) Department of Family Medicine Baylor College of Medicine 5 510 Greenbriar Houston, TX In the mid-nineteenth century, colorful paper trading cards were given away for the first time by French tradesmen to customers or potential clients as a means of advertising. Aristide Boucicault, founder of the Parisian department store Au Bon Marche, is credited with having introduced the first collectible set of picture cards in 1853. Manufacturers of chocolate, coffee, soap, and patent medicines began issuing trading cards, and by 1880 several American tobacco companies were including cards in cigarette packs, the most popular of which depicted buxom women in bathing attire. It was hoped that such sensuous images would build brand loyalty as smokers collected the entire series. (An additional purpose of the cards was to keep the cigarettes from being mashed.) By the tum of the century, tobacco cards bearing the pictures of sports heroes were collected by young and old alike . The rost celebrated of these cards is that of baseball star Honus Wagner of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Wagner abhorred smoking and succeeded in having his card withdrawn. Each of the handful of his cards that slipped into general circulation has an estimated valu~ of $500,000. The British were by far the largest producers and collectors of tobacco trading cards. In the first half of the twentieth century, thousands of series were issued on subjects ranging from orchids to chess problems, and Shakespearean characters to military battles.

  • Honus Wagner T206 Baseball Card to Be Auctioned ...Often Referred To
Honus Wagner T206 Baseball Card to be auctioned ..... Often referred to as the holy grail of baseball cards, a Honus Wagner T206 Baseball Card will be will be auctioned live at the Showplace in Binghamton, NY as well as on the Internet on August 12 th by Bob & Sallie Connelly. The opening bid is $300,000. Bob Connelly estimates the card should sell in the range of $750,000 to $850,000. For several reasons this particular card is probably the most controversial of all the Wagner T206 baseball cards known to exist. Almost all of the 50 to 60 known examples of the Honus Wagner T206 have an advertisement for Sweet Caporal Cigarettes on the reverse. Only a few have surfaced having a Piedmont back as this card does, making it perhaps the third known such specimen. The back of the card is printed in dark blue ink and at the bottom is Factory No. 25, 2 d Dist. VA. The card is owned by John Cobb and Ray Edwards, both of Cincinnati Ohio and has a very sorted history. Cobb purchased the card over 20 years ago for $1,800 from a broker. For the past 10 years, the cards’ authenticity has been questioned. It is important to note that none of the accusers have ever actually seen or examined the card. The allegations have gone so far that the owners have even been accused of stealing the card. In 2002 the owners' state they contacted Pro Sports Authenticators about having the card authenticated. Fearful of having the card out of their sight, the owners requested that PSA only authenticate and grade the card in their presence.
