2005 COLORADO Football: GAME 9 — MISSOURI Saturday, November 5 in Boulder (1:30 p.m. MST; ABC Regional) RELEASE NUMBER 9 (October 31, 2005)
QUICKLY SPEAKING…
The No. 25 (AP)/24 (Coaches) Colorado Buffaloes (6-2, 4-1 Big 12) can take first control of the Big 12 Conference North Division race this Saturday, as they play host to the Missouri Tigers (5-3, 3-2 Big 12) in a 1:30 p.m. kickoff at Folsom Field… ABC will televise the game on a regional basis, with Brad Nessler (play-by-play), Bob Griese (analysis) and Lynn Swann (sideline reporter) to call the action; the network did last year’s game as well, which was ABC’s first CU-MU game since 1978 (it’s only the fourth time it is doing a Colorado-Mizzou game, with both CU wins by a single point: 7-6 in 1961 and 28-27 in ’78)… CU and Mizzou are the only schools with winning records in league play in the North; a CU win would give the Buffs a two-game lead, while an MU win puts the Tigers in command… TE Quinn Sypniewski is on schedule to play in a school record 49th regular season game for CU this week (51 including bowls); he now shared the mark of 48 with Derek McCoy (2000-03)… The Buffs have not allowed an opponent a 100-yard rushing game in 2005; the last player to do it was Oklahoma’s Adrian Peterson in the 2004 Big 12 title game… CU’s website, www.CUBuffs.com features game day updates and live stats for all games… Colorado’s next game at Iowa State (November 12) will either be televised on Fox Sports Net at 5 p.m. MST, or not be televised at all and will kickoff at Noon MST; that decision will be made either this Saturday night or Sunday morning depending on ABC’s selection for that day (it is picking between Texas A&M-Oklahoma and Texas Tech-Oklahoma State; FSN will take the CU-ISU game if ABC takes A&M-OU)… There are roughly 5,700 tickets remaining for the Missouri game, and less than 1,000 for the Nebraska game on November 25. IN THE POLLS
Colorado was ranked No. 25 in the Associated Press (media) and No. 24 in both the USA Today Coaches and Harris polls of October 30, reappearing three weeks after dropping out following the loss at No. 2 Texas. In the BCS Standings (Oct. 31), Colorado moved up two spots to No. 22, as the Buffs are tied for 18th in the six averaged computer rankings. CU had returned to the polls after a 25-month hiatus on October 9, as the Buffaloes were ranked No. 24 in all three. Dating back to the 1989 preseason, CU has been ranked in 184 of the last 273 polls (AP; 69%), which includes a tremendous run of 143 consecutive between 1989 and 1997 (the 10th longest streak of all-time). CU has been ranked 291 times in its history, tied for 21st all-time with Michigan State. Since 1989, CU has played the fourth most ranked teams in the nation (85), trailing Florida (94), Michigan (90) and Florida State (88).
STAT OF THE WEEK
It’s that time year: “the games they remember are played in November”… The Buffs are 47-16-1 in their last 64 November games, including a 14-6 record under Gary Barnett. Colorado rode 3-0 marks in November in winning both the 2001 and 2004 Big 12 North Division titles (3-1 in 2002, when CU won its other divisional crown). Colorado is also 42-8 in its last 50 November games against all-comers aside from Nebraska, going 4-8-1 against NU in turkey month.
OBSCURE NOTE OF THE WEEK
Colorado is 11-2 in its last 13 games where the final margin has been seven or fewer points, dating back to the start of 2003. That includes two games this year, the season opening 31-28 victory over Colorado State and 23-20 win at Kansas State, both thanks to the foot of PK Mason Crosby. In head coach Gary Barnett’s tenure, the Buffs are 18-12 in such games, but lost eight of the first 11 games decided by a touchdown or less, including the first three games of the 2000 season by a combined 10 points. But starting with a 22-19 come-from-behind win at Oklahoma State in 2001, CU is 15-4 in seven point contests.
