John Britto Antony, C.S.C. This week we are so blessed to have Bishop Stephen Rotluanga visit us and celebrate the Eucharist for us. We have many reasons to celebrate and rejoice Please Pray for: with him. He is one of only two Holy Cross (CSC) bishops in India unlike in Bangladesh where we have 8 CSC bishops including one who is a Cardinal. He Carlos Abueg Mary Adams is visiting Florida and our parish for the first time. My close association with him Pat Altzner goes back to 1986 when I was assigned to Champhai, a very remote corner of Frank Amoroso India bordering on Myanmar (Burma). I was at the Holy Cross School Gina Amoroso administered by the Holy Cross Brothers and Fr. Stephen then was the Pastor of the parish. Carolina Ararigo That was my first official mission experience and I absolutely loved it. I am extremely happy to Virginia Bennett see Bishop Stephen after a very long time. Bishop Stephen was consecrated as the Bishop of Maurice Blier, Jr the Diocese of Aizawl on February 2nd 2002. Thank you for visiting us Bishop Stephen and Laurette Bryan have a blessed stay with us! Nancy Caricchio Ray Carlson Recently Fr. John Patrick and I had the privilege of meeting with those involved in the Prayer Gloria Collins Line Ministry and we were so edified to see the passion these prayer warriors have for prayer. Harper & Colton Cornelius Every request for prayer that comes to us through phone messages or emails or personal Bart Corrigan contacts are modified to express the intention of the one seeking prayers and is disseminated to Robert Coxe the group via email and each member of the ministry at once swings in to action. One thing was Carol Crisman Albert DeBono very evident in the way they expressed what they do with the requests. They take every request Thomas De Cicco very seriously and begin to pray from the instant they receive the request. I am deeply Mark Ellis indebted to these unassuming prayer warriors. Thank you for doing this very vital ministry Todd Falanga to our parish. I also request our parishioners to take advantage of this ministry and send your Teresa Fletcher requests for prayer to them. A special thanks to Cindy Baten who has been leading this Adrian Daniel Fonseca ministry from the inception. She had served with passion and has passed on the baton to Frank Debbie Ganey Iolee. Thank you, Frank, for taking on this responsibility adding to the long list of ministries Angie Heartlzer that you are already involved in. Joanne Heckman Pat Henneberry Today we celebrate the 28th Sunday Year C and the readings invite us to reflect on one of the Aleida Hernandez quintessential themes of Christianity namely “Thanksgiving.” In the Second Book of Kings Vilma Koehle (chapter 5) we read the breathtaking episode of Naaman, the army commander of the king of Joseph Mazany Aram, who was afflicted with leprosy, who at the suggestion of his servant girl comes with Rose McCoach huge expectation to seek a healing from the prophet Elisha. At the suggestion of Elisha, Sam Merriman Carol Monz Naaman plunges into the Jordan seven times and gets healed and then he does something very Valerie Morgan becoming of a human person: he comes with a gift to present to prophet Naaman in Gale Novak thanksgiving recognizing the only true God who has the power to give life and to heal. Luke Rae Pallone (17: 1119) presents the unforgettable encounter of Jesus with the 10 lepers and how he cures Dr. Daniel Pepe them and how only 1 of the 10 healed lepers comes back to give thanks to the Lord. This is the Marie Peter story we hear read on the Feast of Thanksgiving every year. Jesus’ question continues to Gilbert Pharam emphatically reverberate in our hearts and minds: “Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where Karen Ball Potucek are the other nine?” We live in a culture that has forgotten the most fundamental value of Carmen Reich being a human. Being a human person and most especially being a Christian consists in giving Judy de la Rosa Diana Carolina Saenz due honor and glory to God and to continually thank Him for the gift of our lives. The church Sherri Taylor attendance today is symptomatic of our culture. Those who are in the church represent that one Shawn Thomas grateful leper who comes back week after week to acknowledge God as our Father and to give John Thompson proper honor and glory and thanks for all that we are. The others have innumerable excuses to Joe Vining be elsewhere sadly and willfully ignoring what is essential. Meghan Witsaman Richard Young To those of you who have faithfully come back to celebrate with the community the most All Military Personnel important act of thanksgiving for Catholics, namely, the Eucharist, Jesus says: “Go, your faith Contact: Louise Vine, Bulletin has saved you.” Yes, dear friends the Eucharist is not only the source and summit of our Editor [email protected] Christian faith but it is also the source and summit of our life and mission. That is why despite knowing that Jesus is really and truly present in the Eucharist, we do not remain in the Church adoring Christ 24/7 but to go forth and live our lives as the Eucharistic People. That is where we can join St. Paul and live his conviction: “to bear with everything for the sake of those who The Prayer Line are chosen, so that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 2: 10). That is where we can truly display our faith commitment: “If we have died with Him, we shall St. John the Evangelist has a team also live with Him; if we persevere, we shall also reign with Him” (2 Timothy 2: 1112). of individuals who will lift up your intention and surround it in prayer. It is with real pleasure that I write these few words of introduction to our Congregation Mission Plan. There has been much conversation, discussion and brain storming over the last year to bring the Congregation Mission Plan (CMP) into being. In provinces and regions you carried out an analysis of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) and looked at what your priorities were for the next five years. In the early stages we wondered how we could achieve such a plan and now with your collaboration and the dedicated work of the members of the EGC, the CMP has become a reality. After the EGC, the leaders of each province and region confirmed some final details which were submitted to the CLT and the final document has been produced. At the EGC, there was a real sense of satisfaction and excitement when we had a ritual to accept the CMP and commit ourselves to its implementation over the next five years.

Along with the Feast of the Passover and the Feast of Tabernacles, Pentecost was one of the major feasts of the Jews. During these three great Jewish festivals, every male Jew living within twenty miles of Jerusalem was legally bound to go to Jerusalem to participate in the feast. The word Pentecost is Greek for “pentecostes” which means “fiftieth.” The feast received this name because it was celebrated fifty days after the Feast of the Passover. Another name for the Jewish Pentecost is Shebuot or "The Feast of Weeks (the "week" of seven Sabbaths between Passover and Pentecost)." It was originally a day of thanksgiving for the completion of the harvest. During Passover, the first omer (a Hebrew measure of about a bushel), of barley was offered to God. At Pentecost, two loaves of bread were offered in gratitude for the harvest. Later, the Jews added to the Feast of Pentecost the element of Yahweh’s Covenant with Noah which took place fifty days after the great deluge. Still later, they made this feast an occasion to thank God for His Sinaitic Covenant with Moses which occurred fifty days after the beginning of the Exodus from Egypt. For Christians, the Pentecost Sunday is one of the most ancient feasts of the Church, celebrated early enough to be mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 20:16) and St Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians (I Cor16:8).

Fr Peter Marie Mermier, the Servant of God, was born on August 28, 1790 at Vouray in the parish of Chaumont en Genevois in Savoy. The Church in Savoy was badly affected by French Revolution and many priests left the country while a few went into hiding. The revolutionaries had closed churches and schools. Fr Peter Mermier had his primary education at the hands of his own mother, a woman of noble character, of whom he later said: “I repent for not having written anything about my mother. My God how much I owe her! No, no, she was not an ordinary woman” (Cf. Srs Maria Goretti and Berchmans,Trs, Family Annals, Trichy: The Printing House, 2009 - 4th Edition, p. 9). He did his secondary school studies as a boarder in Melan. In 1807 he joined the Major Seminary at Chambery. He was fervent in prayer, and a hard worker with genuine concern and love for his companions. He was ordained priest on March 21, 1813 at the age of twenty-three- and-half. His first appointment was at Magland as Assistant Parish Priest to Canon Desjacques. There he made two rules for himself on poverty and chastity. 1. Poverty: “As much as it depends on me, I will have a room without any tapestry or decoration.

Editorial: Service to God and Humankind When the Christian missionaries from Great Britain preached the Gospel in Mizoram more than a century ago, it was not well received by the Mizo audience in the beginning. To drive home their message, they looked for a point of contact and begun to theologized the Gospel for the Mizo context. Instead of talking about their need of a savior from sin, the missionaries told the Mizo people that Jesus is the vanquisher of the devil.

  • MESSAGE We Are Ending the Year 2019 on a Tumultuous Note
MESSAGE We are ending the year 2019 on a tumultuous note. The atmosphere in the country is viti ated with numerous events which have caused lot of unrest. We are in the throes of unprecedented mass protests against the Nati onal Register of Citi zens NRC in Assam; the new Act – Citi zenship Amendment Act CAA and now it is again Nati onal Populati on Register NPR! The voices for and against are quite vociferous that they are damaging to the polity of the nati on. It is quite confusing to say the least. E.g. Prime Minister of the country asks people – “Where are the detenti on camps?” And others are bringing out the facts and fi gures to show that detenti on camps are there for real and that they are not imaginary. It looks like it is the duty of those in power to confuse people when they begin to face the challenge! Scrapping of Arti cle 370 in Kashmir and reducing the Jammu and Kashmir state to a Union Territory causing a great shut down in the beauti ful snowy valley is another issue that has taken a toll on the citi zens of the country specially those of Kashmir. Ayodhya wrangle seems to have been resolved by the Apex Court of the country. There was the great fi asco and high drama regarding the formati on of government in Maharashtra aft er the Assembly poll results. All in all the country was on tenterhooks for a long ti me. In our home front Bethany Sisters are in the midst of Centenary mood.
