Dear Friends, October 13, 2019, 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C Fr. John Britto Antony, C.S.C. This week we are so blessed to have Bishop Stephen Rotluanga visit us and celebrate the Eucharist for us. We have many reasons to celebrate and rejoice Please Pray for: with him. He is one of only two Holy Cross (CSC) bishops in unlike in Bangladesh where we have 8 CSC bishops including one who is a Cardinal. He Carlos Abueg Mary Adams is visiting Florida and our parish for the first time. My close association with him Pat Altzner goes back to 1986 when I was assigned to Champhai, a very remote corner of Frank Amoroso India bordering on Myanmar (Burma). I was at the Holy Cross School Gina Amoroso administered by the Holy Cross Brothers and Fr. Stephen then was the Pastor of the parish. Carolina Ararigo That was my first official mission experience and I absolutely loved it. I am extremely happy to Virginia Bennett see Bishop Stephen after a very long time. Bishop Stephen was consecrated as the Bishop of Maurice Blier, Jr the Diocese of on February 2nd 2002. Thank you for visiting us Bishop Stephen and Laurette Bryan have a blessed stay with us! Nancy Caricchio Ray Carlson Recently Fr. John Patrick and I had the privilege of meeting with those involved in the Prayer Gloria Collins Line Ministry and we were so edified to see the passion these prayer warriors have for prayer. Harper & Colton Cornelius Every request for prayer that comes to us through phone messages or emails or personal Bart Corrigan contacts are modified to express the intention of the one seeking prayers and is disseminated to Robert Coxe the group via email and each member of the ministry at once swings in to action. One thing was Carol Crisman Albert DeBono very evident in the way they expressed what they do with the requests. They take every request Thomas De Cicco very seriously and begin to pray from the instant they receive the request. I am deeply Mark Ellis indebted to these unassuming prayer warriors. Thank you for doing this very vital ministry Todd Falanga to our parish. I also request our parishioners to take advantage of this ministry and send your Teresa Fletcher requests for prayer to them. A special thanks to Cindy Baten who has been leading this Adrian Daniel Fonseca ministry from the inception. She had served with passion and has passed on the baton to Frank Debbie Ganey Iolee. Thank you, Frank, for taking on this responsibility adding to the long list of ministries Angie Heartlzer that you are already involved in. Joanne Heckman Pat Henneberry Today we celebrate the 28th Sunday Year C and the readings invite us to reflect on one of the Aleida Hernandez quintessential themes of Christianity namely “Thanksgiving.” In the Second Book of Kings Vilma Koehle (chapter 5) we read the breathtaking episode of Naaman, the army commander of the king of Joseph Mazany Aram, who was afflicted with leprosy, who at the suggestion of his servant girl comes with Rose McCoach huge expectation to seek a healing from the prophet Elisha. At the suggestion of Elisha, Sam Merriman Carol Monz Naaman plunges into the Jordan seven times and gets healed and then he does something very Valerie Morgan becoming of a human person: he comes with a gift to present to prophet Naaman in Gale Novak thanksgiving recognizing the only true God who has the power to give life and to heal. Luke Rae Pallone (17: 1119) presents the unforgettable encounter of Jesus with the 10 lepers and how he cures Dr. Daniel Pepe them and how only 1 of the 10 healed lepers comes back to give thanks to the Lord. This is the Marie Peter story we hear read on the Feast of Thanksgiving every year. Jesus’ question continues to Gilbert Pharam emphatically reverberate in our hearts and minds: “Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where Karen Ball Potucek are the other nine?” We live in a culture that has forgotten the most fundamental value of Carmen Reich being a human. Being a human person and most especially being a Christian consists in giving Judy de la Rosa Diana Carolina Saenz due honor and glory to God and to continually thank Him for the gift of our lives. The church Sherri Taylor attendance today is symptomatic of our culture. Those who are in the church represent that one Shawn Thomas grateful leper who comes back week after week to acknowledge God as our Father and to give John Thompson proper honor and glory and thanks for all that we are. The others have innumerable excuses to Joe Vining be elsewhere sadly and willfully ignoring what is essential. Meghan Witsaman Richard Young To those of you who have faithfully come back to celebrate with the community the most All Military Personnel important act of thanksgiving for Catholics, namely, the Eucharist, Jesus says: “Go, your faith Contact: Louise Vine, Bulletin has saved you.” Yes, dear friends the Eucharist is not only the source and summit of our Editor [email protected] Christian faith but it is also the source and summit of our life and mission. That is why despite knowing that Jesus is really and truly present in the Eucharist, we do not remain in the Church adoring Christ 24/7 but to go forth and live our lives as the Eucharistic People. That is where we can join St. Paul and live his conviction: “to bear with everything for the sake of those who The Prayer Line are chosen, so that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 2: 10). That is where we can truly display our faith commitment: “If we have died with Him, we shall St. John the Evangelist has a team also live with Him; if we persevere, we shall also reign with Him” (2 Timothy 2: 1112). of individuals who will lift up your intention and surround it in prayer. Prepare for Next Weeks Scriptural Readings 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time October 20, 2019 St. John’s Vocation Cup Gospel Luke 18:18 Every member of our parish is Jesus told his disciples a parable about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming requested to pray the following weary. He said, “There was a judge in a certain town who neither feared God nor respected prayer for the Vocations: any human being. And a widow in that town used to come to him and say, ‘Render a just God most merciful and fountain of decision for me against my adversary.’ For a long time the judge was unwilling, but eventually all graces, thank you for opening he thought, ‘While it is true that I neither fear God nor respect any human being, because this wide the doors of the church to us widow keeps bothering me I shall deliver a just decision for her lest she finally come and strike and for inviting us to extend your me.’” presence in a world that keeps moving away from you. Thank you The Lord said, “Pay attention to what the dishonest judge says. Will not God then secure the for nurturing in us a longing to be rights of His chosen ones who call out to Him day and night? Will He be slow to answer of service to your church. Enkindle them? I tell you, He will see to it that justice is done for them speedily. But when the Son of in us a deep love for you that the Man comes, will He find faith on earth?” men and women of our parish might be more deeply inserted into ©2019 United States Conference of Catholic Bishops the mystery of your Son and thus joyfully serve you in the Priesthood “Questions of the Week” October 20, 2019 and Religious Life. TWENTYEIGHTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME 4 OCTOBER 13, 2019 Parish Information

Stewardship Reflection: Gratitude is the key to a stewardship way of life. Today’s readings demonstrate the power and vital importance of gratitude in the life of the Christian disciple, for gratitude leads us to worship God, who offers us salvation. We see the power of gratitude on display in the Gospel passage from Luke after Jesus heals 10 lepers. “And one of them, realizing he had been healed, returned.” Only one of the 10 recognized the tremendous blessing he had received from Jesus, and he returned to thank Him. While it’s easy to feel indignant at the failure of the nine others to return and thank Jesus, how often do we fail to recognize the blessings, answered prayers, and healings (both physical and spiritual), that the Lord showers upon us day and night? The truth is that our very lives and every breath we take are His gift to us. But we can get so caught up in the stresses and distractions of daily life that we lose touch with this truth. The Samaritan reacts to his gift of healing with the proper response to our loving God. Recognizing what he had just received from the Lord, he “returned, glorifying God in a loud voice; and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked Him.” He was grateful for what God had done for him and this gratitude led to worship. And because of this response, Jesus offered him a far more precious gift that physical healing; He offered him the gift of salvation. “Stand up and go; your faith has saved you.” Too often we hear the phrase, “Count your blessings,” and write it off as nothing more than a trite saying. Today’s Gospel shows us otherwise. Gratitude is powerful. It deepens our faith in God and leads us to fitting worship of Him. Copyright ©2015 Catholic Stewardship Consultants, Inc.
