This is a sequel to his 2015 film Maari. Dhanush, in addition to producing a film under his company Wunderbar Films, also stars as the main character, reprising his role from the first film. The plot picking up from the prequel, the film begins with Maariyappan aka Maari as a hilarious gangster with his pals Sanikkizhamai aka Sani (Robo Shankar) and Robert aka Adithangi (lit. punching bag). Maari chased around Araathu Aanandi, a loosu ponna (lit. crazy girl) auto rickshaw driver who is head over heels in love with him. However, try as best she could, Maari does not give her a second look and constantly shows her irritation to her. In a parallel storyline, Gangadhar Bija is seen escaping from prison, killing two police officers, with the walls of the cell scrawled with the words Kill Maari. He wants revenge, because his brother, who was a lawyer, promised to release Bija from prison. Unfortunately, his brother was killed at the hands of Maari, as the former tried to molest Aanadi's older sister. It's also the reason why Aanandi loves Maari. Maari gets his 100th attempted murder of his life by his rival Singayya, and celebrate, Kalai, Sani, and Adithangi quit Maari Party. When Maari returned, he was attacked and taken to hospital and cared for him. Under Biji's plan, Wallawan asks Sani to send Aanandi to work that turns out to be a drug smuggler, a job maari hates. Aanandi goes to do the job and comes across the feces. Faced with Aanandi, she tells him that Maari asked her to do so. This raises doubts in Kala Wallawan is caught by Maari with drugs, and when Maari confronts Kalai, a fight breaks out. Maari and his buddies set all the drugs on fire, and Bija kills Wallawan to make it appear that Maari killed him. Kalai is furious and orders his men to kill Maari. Vijaya, now deputy interior minister, in an attempt to find Maari, posts his picture alongside Aanandi in the newspapers. Maari sees this and meets Vijaya, asking her to delete the photos. Maari says he lived in Tenkosi with an elderly couple. Aanandi became pregnant and a healthy boy was born. However, due to complications caused by paralysis, Aanandi dies a few minutes after giving birth. Maari then raises a boy named Kaali (Master Ragavan) with the help of an old couple and sani. It is shown that Kaali inherited his father's behavior and continues to collect fights at school. Maari asks Vijay to stop coming for him (at his request) and says he has changed his path. When Kaali sees some senior students taunting the teacher, he complains to the principal. In retaliation, the boys chase him and try to teach him a lesson, only to get beaten black and blue by Kaali. A council member (Stalin), the father of one of the boys, calls Kaali to hit him, but Maari goes and asks for forgiveness. Meanwhile, the commissioner of the city police mentions to the media that there is an informant in the Biji gang. Using his moles in the police station, Bija tries to find out who the mole, but fails. It then emerged that there was no mole and that the whole story had been fabricated to identify corrupt police officers in the department, including the commissioner.
