50p 1 Bishop’s Letter

At this time of year, as the days draw out and the sunshine begins to turn the barley a golden yellow, many of us are fortunate enough to be looking forward to the prospect of a summer holiday and a break from our normal routine.

This year, however, it is inevitable that some of us will do so with a twinge of anxiety. One inevitable result of the recent appalling acts of terrorism in Tunisia, Kuwait and France is a heightened sense of our own vulnerability and mortality. For the friends and family of Carly Lovett and Claire Windass, who were so tragically killed in Tunisia, there is immense sadness as they struggle to come to terms with their loss.

These atrocities were perpetrated by a tiny minority who have a very warped and horrifically misguided view of what it means to be a Muslim, particularly during the month of Ramadan. The teaching of the Christian faith is that love is stronger than evil, and while proper justice is appropriate, revenge and scapegoating are not. It is incumbent upon all of us who follow Christ to continue to welcome the stranger among us, and to love our neighbour as ourselves.

Please hold in your thoughts and prayers all those who have been affected by these tragedies, that through the grace and love of God they may find strength and comfort in the very difficult days ahead. Pray too for the peace of our world, and for men and women of goodwill wherever they may be, that together we may be united in our work for peace and justice in the lives of all God’s children. Bishop Christopher

6 “The Times They Are A-Changin”

As a product of the 1960’s I have stacks of records and cd’s that really do inspire and remind me of many people and situations. Bob Dylan was always a favorite and this track seemed to speak about where I am. Listening to him stirred many memories and I began to think about my Mum and home and childhood.

My Mum’s claim to fame was nearly being run over by Cary Grant in a red MG outside Elstree film studios. She loved Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, all those wonderful bands( which sounded SO boring), Dinah Shore, Vera Lynn, Guy Mitchell, etc. etc. etc.

The 50's were the boomer years and the children from those years are now the parents and grandparents who caused that boom in the birthrate. Me included I am now the “older generation”, how did it happen? How did Ted and myself become the oldest? My grandchildren now ask me: “Ma, what was it like in the olden days?” They are incredulous when I say we did not have a car and giggle when I say that parents were to be obeyed and that you would only be told once.

I suppose The 50's were one of the last decades where we saw the traditional roles of the woman staying at home and being a homemaker and the man as the sole breadwinner for a family. Have we really advanced? Do we do it so much better today? So much happened in the years after the war that improved our lives today, but we must not wear rose colored memory spectacles. Rather take to heart the words of Bob Dylan:

“Come gather 'round people wherever you roam and admit that the waters around you have grown and accept it that soon you'll be drenched to the bone. If your time to you Is worth savin' then you better start swimmin' or you'll sink like a stone For the times they are a-changin'.”

So much is changing in my life at the moment, but I do not intend to sink like a stone. My time to me is worth saving and so I had better learn, very fast, how to swim!

Ted & I talk often of home and childhood and how fortunate we were and are as far as family goes. We take great delight in saying “when we are retired.” But that is not the same as acknowledging how much we will miss being here with you all. There is much to be done over the coming months, but we have never failed to get it done together, as Bob Dylan says:

Come mothers and fathers Throughout the land and don't criticize what you can't understand Your sons and your daughters are beyond your command

7 Your old road is Rapidly agin' please get out of the new one If you can't lend your hand For the times they are a-changin'.

10 FAMILY SERVICE.

“His service is the golden thread close binding humankind” were some of the words chosen by Rev’d Joan Thornett for the Call to Worship at the Family service on 5th July. The theme was ‘Threads’ and before the service the children threaded beads to make a bracelet or used thread to make bookmarks. They were helped by Jane and Chris. The children also acted as crucifer, acolytes and took the collection.

The first lesson, read by David Smith, was taken from Hosea and the second lesson, read by Kaye Faulkner, was the parable of the Good Samaritan. Rev’d Thornett gave a very interesting talk about weaving and brought examples of materials that were used to make a nun’s wimple and Fred Astaire’s shirts. She talked about the picking rooms where ladies would snip off any bobbles found in the material or weave in any loose threads and related this to our relationship with God and the tight thread that can bind people to Him.

The children showed their needlework and bracelets to the congregation and Jane Parker and Margaret Cook talked about the parable with the children. Margaret showed the chart for a cross stitch picture and explained how difficult it is to recognize the picture until the coloured threads are worked into the material comparing it to Jesus weaving in a message into his parables. “So many threads to the story of our lives” was a memorable sentence spoken in the prayers led by Jane.

The congregation was invited to stay for coffee, which was served by Eileen Skinner and Win Iremonger, so that the threads of our lives could continue to intertwine after the service had ended.

The team would like to thank John Hobson for producing a service sheet each month and for researching quotations applicable to the theme. One quotation used this month was; “It is threads, hundreds of tiny threads, which sew people together through the years.” Thank you John.

The next Family Service will be held on 2nd August at 10am. Everyone welcome.

12 GREGORY CROFT EDUCATIONAL TRUST

Education is a vital part in all our lives, even if it is a long time ago when we were in School! There is a bit of a jargon phrase that is banded about today “Life Long Learning” but it is so true. We learn so much every day of our lives and I feel our task as followers of “The Teacher” is to enable access for all to opened horizons.

Gregory Croft 200 years ago felt just that and endowed a school in East Kirkby. The school was originally founded as a Free School in 1719. A new school opened on 5 May 1874. Senior pupils from and Revesby Schools were admitted in March 1945. Senior pupils were transferred to the Franklin Secondary School, Spilsby in September 1957. The school moved into a new building in September 1973. Pupils from Old Bolingbroke School were admitted in April 1974. The school was closed in July 1989.

Today the School continues as the Tree House Nursery and Members of the Trust, who met there recently, were delighted to see the work continuing for the very young. The experience offered is one that enables young children to explore and delight in the outdoors as well as the homely environment of the old school building (old 1973!!).

The Trust owns the building and supports the work there as Landlord but the Trust’s main work is to widen opportunities for young people in the area through grants to those who live in the Old Catchment Area of the School.

To further this work the GREGORY CROFT TRUST are looking for (1) a CLERK to take on the Administration and (2) a MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR to look after the School Buildings and Grounds.

For details and applications please contact me as Chair. Honorariums given.

Yours Fr. Peter

News from Rev’d Fran

August is holiday time for many people. With children off school, long balmy summer evenings (well, a girl can dream!), and fewer calls for meetings, it is a good time to go and meet people who previously we have rushed past without stopping for a chat. There is time to sit and read those books which have been languishing on the shelf, where they were put with good intentions. There is time to plan events which are due to take place once the holiday period is over. But with all the meeting and greeting, the reading and the planning – suddenly there is no time. No time for me, no time for family, no time for God. So I hope you will make this holiday period a time for relaxing in the company of those who know you well and still love you. And then we will have plenty to talk about when we come back together in September – God loves a good natter. Have a good holiday!

Saints in Every Generation

To celebrate the Year of Discipleship across the Diocese there will be a day of activity and reflection in the Cathedral on Saturday 26 September. We will be joined by John Bell from the Iona Community, who is an inspirational speaker and well worth listening to. There will be seminars, discussions, and exhibitions. In addition there will be an opportunity to follow a pilgrimage around the Cathedral exploring different aspects of Discipleship.

This is going to be a fantastic occasion, and it would be a shame to miss out on the opportunity to meet with hundreds of fellow disciples. We are hoping to take a bus from the Deanery, so if you are interested, please let Jane know in the Deanery Office. It is necessary to book to attend, but we can make a block booking for people on the bus. Individual booking forms are available, but you can just email your details to [email protected]. There is a children’s programme for those aged 2 – 14.

ERESBY HALL REMEMBRANCE GARDEN

Thanks to the fund raising by Margaret Palmer and generous donations by families and friends of Eresby Hall the Garden of Remembrance is now finished.

In a quiet, secluded part of the Hall’s garden Margaret has created a quiet area where residents, friends, staff and families can sit and remember their loved ones.

Margaret has thought carefully about planting. As requested she has planted rosemary for remembrance in some of the tubs. There are two wild areas – one planted with primroses and the other with bluebells. The ground is covered with bark to help keep the weeds down and the fencing has been painted.

Colourful hanging baskets are attached to the fencing and roses and clematis will soon become established.

Margaret was told by some families that they found it difficult to go back into Eresby Hall after a loved one had died but they still wanted to visit and remember. That was when she came up with the idea of the garden. Its position means that visitors can access the garden through a gate from Ancaster Avenue and not have to go into the home.

Margaret is actually a housekeeper at the Hall but her love of gardening gave her the inspiration to create the Remembrance Garden in her own time.

Well done Margaret!
