REACH HIGH - STRIVE FOR KNOWLEDGE - LIVE WITH ALL YOUR HEART

Kia ora koutou te whanau Dear Parents/Caregivers

Welcome to the following children who have started with us recently; Leon Clarence (Rm 4),

Lincoln Gibb (Rm 7) and Harrison Ladds (Rm 3).

We also welcome student teacher Sam Baxendine who is on a teaching placement in Room 15.

We now have our Gilbert Street crossing operational and a new group of senior students trained to run the Road Patrol before and after school. Please be patient as these students become more familiar with the traffic flow in the area. Please also be aware that the Police are continually monitoring school crossings in the area and will ticket those who park on yellow lines or across driveways – no matter how brief your stay is!!!

Last week I visited a number of schools in Christchurch and it was interesting to see the changes going on in terms of school design, classroom layouts and the move towards collaborative teaching. The earthquake rebuilds of schools has led to a fresh approach and provided opportunity for many of the affected areas to embrace the change. It will be interesting to see how all of the totally open plan schools develop, as the style of teaching will also need to be adapted. In my opinion it is the quality of the teaching that is most crucial - as opposed to the type of building or furniture. Winter sports are now well underway and Henley is represented by miniball (three teams) and (nine teams). Interestingly we have netball teams from Year 1 through to Year 6. The School Cross Country league has two more Saturdays to run with 1km races at Rabbit Island this Saturday and Miyazu Park on Saturday 23 rd May. All races start at 3pm, no entry fee, register on the day or by email to nelsoncrossc [email protected]

I hope all the mums had an enjoyable Mother’s Day. Don’t forget Father’s Day is coming up in September. Finally, congratulations to Room 19a Teacher, Sabine Reinert and her partner Andrew who got engaged last weekend. We wish you all the best. Kind regards , John

Last time I shared some thoughts about how reading aloud to your child makes a difference to their learning. This time I’d like to offer some advice on how to encourage home reading by your child. It’s important to keep homework reading a positive experience. Choose the time for reading carefully, perhaps after your child has had some afternoon tea, or first thing in the morning. If your child is tired, try saying “I’ll read a page and then it’s your turn for a page”, this works well particularly on longer reading books. Play games with the book by asking your child to find a common word on each page. With longer iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiistories, ask your child a question about the story, or ask them to tell you iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiithe main points of the story. Many children learn to read fluently iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii but lack a thorough understanding of the text.

Good luck and keep it positive!

Entertainment Book School Fundraiser

The school is once again offering Entertainment memberships (book or digital memberships) to our families. The brand new 2015/2016 Entertainment Membership features many of the area’s restaurants, cafes, attractions and activities and covers Nelson, Marlborough and Canterbury. There are hundreds of up to 50% off and 2-for-1 offers that you and your family can enjoy until June 2016. The best part is that for only $65.00 you’ll be helping our fundraising as $13.00 from each Book or Digital Membership sold comes to the school Please let your family, friends, neighbours and work colleagues know we are fundraising as the more we sell, the more funds we raise! For more information on the book you can visit http://www.entertainmentbook.co.nz/about/Tell -Me-More/Christchurch and there is a sample book at the school office.

Order forms were sent home for both the books and the digital memberships (android or apple devices) and can be returned to the school office as orders are still being taken.
