Season Summary: After graduating 3 starters and 2 New England All‐Stars the 2009 team knew it had a tough road if it were to follow in the tradition of regular season success and post season play. There were many uncertainties going in, but as a credit to this team, especially the seniors, the 2009 season concludes with wonderful memories and a lasting legacy. The lady Pelicans kicked off the season with a match versus NMH and St. Pauls starting 3 new players at new positions. It wasn’t the prettiest of volleyball, but Loomis fought hard for 2 key Class A victories and that day set an early tone of success. Midway through the season Loomis battled through a tough stretch and found itself licking its wounds after suffering tough losses to Andover, Choate (2 times), Hotchkiss, and a heartbreaker 5 set match versus Exeter. Loomis was 5‐5, searching for its identity and wondering if the post‐season was a possibility. To make matters worse the Pelicans were plagued with injury and illness but Loomis stayed positive and found ways to win. After a key victory at Taft (1 in the midst of an 8 game win streak), everyone started to gain confidence and the identity of the 2009 team started to emerge. Loomis played 12 of its 19 matches on the road which is always tough, but in retrospect it proved to be a valuable asset as it made playing at home all that more special and gave the team an added boost of confidence. As evidence, Loomis hosted #3 ranked Hotchkiss in the last week of the season and played a memorable match. Set 1 was a thriller with Loomis holding a lead throughout. The Pelicans had set point 24‐21, but failed to tally the last point and lost a heartbreaker 26‐24. The momentum was in favor of Hotchkiss and they looked to have an easy game in set 2 holding a 7 point lead throughout much of the set, but then came perhaps the most pivotal moment in recent history. Senior captain Katie Swinton stepped back to the service line with the team trailing 17‐23. It was crunch time and everyone knew that if Loomis didn’t make a run the match was probably over. Katie and the entire team found their inner mental fortitude (something that was lacking early in the season) and executed beautifully in a classic comeback taking set 2 25‐23. The momentum was now back with the Pelicans and games 3 and 4 were drubbings of the Bearcats from Hotchkiss. Everyone played with a fire and passion for defense and executed wisely on offense. As one spectator commented after the match “Loomis broke the will of Hotchkiss and whupped them out of the gym”. It was a proud moment that finalized the identity but it wasn’t the last. Loomis concluded the regular season with a 9 game win streak going 14‐5 overall. They earned a #4 seed in the New England tournament and hosted #5 Exeter in the quarterfinal match. The storybook season continued as Loomis once again played inspired defense and avenged the early season loss, winning 3‐1 in a thrilling match. For only the third time in school history, Loomis made it to the semifinals and there they faced undefeated #1 Choate. Unfortunately, Choate proved to be the better team that day (they went on the win the Championship over Hotchkiss), but the 2009 team has nothing to shame. In my coaching career, I have never had a team play like this one. They embodied the true essence of the word team as there were no superstars or go to players. All 9 players made critical contributions and plays at some point in the season. Their key to success was a love for the game and competition and a drive to work hard in every practice. Going into every season, every coach hopes that a team will improve a little every week and I can honestly say that this team did just that and for that and so much more I am proud of all that they accomplished and I will now refer back onto the 2009 as a team to be modeled. I thank them for a fun ride! LCVB would like to thank all the parents, family, friends and the entire athletic department for their support throughout this memorable season.

Girls Varsity Soccer

First and foremost a huge congratulations is due to all of the soccer players in the girls program this fall. It's been my honor to be part of this soccer program, and I can honestly say that I've loved every minute of it. As students and soccer players, these girls are vibrant, passionate, ambitious ‐ dare I say, brilliant. They are a wonderful group.

They, in the tradition of Loomis, pioneered an untraditional approach to their sport. Their team was expanded to a program of 56 players all focused on the development and success of each contributor. The objective was to create an open roster and allow all players to build confidence in themselves so they bring their best skills to the field and fulfill their responsibilities on the field regardless of whomever else is on the field with them. These 56 players embraced the potential. They doubted the process, and despite realizing a different sense of camarderie, they powered through with curiosity and courage that brought ultimate success. The success is not defined by the 16‐1‐3 record, but rather the willingness of the players to learn from each other, to recognize more playing time means more touches, which traslates to increased confidence and better skills ensuring more playing time ‐ etc, etc.

Each and every player achieved at least one something great. For some it was increased leadership capabilities, others it was better soccer intelligence. For most there was tremendous improvement in overall skills on and off the ball. For all personal trust in themselves and teammates was fostered and reinforced. Such trust leads to stronger faith in their own decision making, specifically the ability to recognize the best choice quickly by considering outcomes and discerning options. This is the most critical of life skills ‐ on and off the field.

My sense is that this season was a success. The success came in the life lessons about open‐mindedness, flexibility, curiosity, and courage. All these traits are as much a part of the Loomis Chaffee Girls' Soccer Program as are speed, agility, quickness, perseverence, dedication, athleticism, and talent.

Two players who truly embraced this new philosophy of development and excelled in the process are:

Coaches' Award: Chelsea Ryan ‐ for her attributes as a great leader evidenced by her willingness to embrace all of her colleagues in the program. Her presence and humor ‐ whether she was on or off the field ‐ fostered a sense of belonging for all of the 56. It's been said that a good manager or a good captain is a leader among equals. This is the caption that best describes Chelsea's dedication, truly believing that all the players had to be in it to win it ‐ and she worked hard to motivate everyone towards their bestselves.

MVP: Kate McCarthy ‐ Typically this type of award is given a player who is a very accomplished on the field ‐ and this is no different. Kate's leadership is found by example. Her personal playing style is to leave it all on the field, and she does. More than those two key attributes, this accolade is earned because of the personal growth and maturity exhibited throughout the season. Her ever‐increasing ability to play smarter and smarter soccer game after game, and then step up to create cohesiveness after the captain's injury ‐ are contributions worthy of congratulations.

VARSITY FOOTBALL 2009

Varsity Football had a solid season this year. Senior leadership was the key ingredient for this edition of the Pelican football team. Captain Will Mucci set the example of setting personal glory aside for the team glory. The intensity and experience of our post‐graduates Griff Cardew, Cameron Sandquist, Kevin and A.J. Leary, Jake Semones, Dillon Zweifel, Ryan Hardin, Andrew Kukesh, Caleb Florence, and Mike Cifor brought maturity to our team. Seniors Seung Yong Sung, Zach Arlia, Jon Rosenthal, Mike Kielbasa, Eric Weiss, Trey Benincosa, Craig Lennon and Teddy Baker all contributed to the team in various ways, whether it was by being a starting tight end or lineman, starting on specials, or playing the role of the opponent’s top running back that we had to key on ‐ every senior played a critical role in the success of this year’s team. Victories over the New England runner up Hotchkiss and over longtime rival Avon Old Farms set the tone for a team that is on the rise to work hard all season long.

Varsity Unsung Hero: Seung Yong Sung ’10 The Unsung Hero Award is designed for the athlete who plays in relative anonymity to the fans. However, he is a crucial cog in the wheel that makes a team succeed. Seung does not score the touchdowns or throw the long passes, it is he who allows it to happen. Seung has played both tackle on offense and defense as well as special teams. It is his job to block on offense and take on double teams on defense, while getting none of the glory or the credit of success to the casual observer. Seung does not know how much of each of his roles he will play each game; however, he is always ready to do what the team needs him to do. Seung is a tireless worker in practice. When he is not in with the first group he jumps in on the scout team to make everyone better. Seung has set an example as a student at Loomis for others to follow – if someone wants to succeed at something badly enough, he/she can make it happen through hard work, dedication, and putting your personal glory aside for the success of the team.

Varsity Coaches’ Award: Mike Cifor ’10 The Coaches’ Award is designed for the athlete who exemplifies the attributes that any coach would want in his players. Mike Cifor has set an example of excellence in his only year on the team. Mike has brought a tough no nonsense attitude to the to offensive and defensive lines. Mike never took a rep off and he set the tone for every day. Every lineman knew that you had to come to practice ready to play every day because Mike Cifor was waiting for you. Mike is the consummate team player. He plays with intelligence, emotion, and toughness – the exact qualities any coach would want.

Character and Sportsmanship Award: Cameron Sandquist ‘10 The Character and Sportsmanship Award is intended for the player who represents himself on and off the field as a gentleman and exudes good sportsmanship at all times. Cameron Sandquist set an example on and off the field for others to follow. After scoring any of his multiple touchdowns this fall, Cameron always acted with class and dignity as he handed the ball to the official after the play. He also responded to adversity with the same levelheadedness that he demonstrated when things went well. Off the gridiron, Cameron is a gentleman and a scholar and sets an example for others to follow.

VARSITY GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY 2009

This year’s girls cross country team came into the season prepared. They had base trained over the summer, working up to 10‐milers, many of them. And they welcomed the work ahead. This preparation, physical and mental, made all the difference in their season. As individuals, many of these girls improved enormously, taking minutes off their best times on the home course since last year. As a team, the rewards were multiplied.

In the regular season, the team was 4‐1. Their only loss was to a very talented Hotchkiss team.

Going into the Founders League Championship on our home course, Hotchkiss was the hands‐down favorite. But we knew the fight for second would be fierce among Loomis, Taft, and Miss Porter's. Although ready to pounce if Hotchkiss had an off day, we mainly focused our strategy on winning the battle for second, and the girls ran great. Claire Conway, Brie Malanga, and Sarah Patrick earned All‐Founders honors by finishing in the top 15, and a tight pack of Pelicans followed close on their heels. We were second only to Hotchkiss and 20 points ahead of third‐place Taft. The team’s hard work, really since July; their focus; and their composure even amid the excitement of running on the home course, paid off with an impressive performance on race day.

At the New Englands the following weekend, the team capped off the season by achieving one of the goals they had set for themselves way back on Labor Day: to be one of the top five teams in New England. And they did it in the muddiest, slipperiest conditions that veteran coaches have seen in years. The girls were undaunted by the conditions, welcoming them as an opportunity. And the mud on these girls when they crossed the finish line was the stuff of legend. One of the best memories of the season will be the girls’ smiles shining out from behind the mud that covered them, literally, to their eyeballs after a race well run.

2009 LOOMIS CHAFFEE BOYS SOCCER

One indelible image that will forever remain etched in this writer’s mind is that of Jesse Wasserman, broken rib and all, grabbing the ball out of the back of our goal after Kent had scored their third goal and taken a 3‐0 lead in the second half and then sprinting with the ball up to midfield where we were about to kick off. For many the game and LC’s tournament hopes had ended. Except for Jesse and soon all of his teammates. Was it really possible?

After Mike Choquette’s well taken penalty kick with 16 minutes to play, the score remained 3‐1 until just over three minutes when Choquette’s well placed free kick skimmed off John Kramer’s head to bring the Pelicans within one goal. And then, miraculously, with but 45 seconds remaining, Jack Randazzo’s bullet from 27 yards deflected off a Kent defender and whistled past a helpless goalkeeper to level the game at 3. That final result not only stunned the home team but also when combined with Taft’s victory over Hotchkiss, gave LC their third consecutive Western New England and Founders League titles and a 12th consecutive New England Class A tournament berth.

Of course, such a comeback is rare in the game of soccer and surely the soccer gods were smiling on the Pelicans for at least those 16 minutes (as opposed to the quarterfinal game vs. BB&N). But the point of the story is to illustrate the resolve and resilience of the team, on that day and really throughout the entire season. For this was a season like no other in the past 32 years.

While no one suffered a season ending injury (like Jesse’s brother Max did two years ago), very few were spared the injury “bug.” Whether Randazzo’s hip flexor or Wasserman’s ribs or Pat Moriarty’s back or Fan the Elder’s knee or Taylor Esper’s ankle (not to mention swine flu) or Andrew Bixler’s hamstring or back or simply Chris Lee’s swine flu or Dale Reese’s bronchitis, it was a rare occasion indeed to have the entire team at a practice to train together. And in the final analysis, the inability of players to train together will lead eventually to less than desirable performances on the field especially against top flight competition.

That said, however, players learned to play with pain often in positions unfamiliar to them, key players like goalkeeper John Belanger refocused, the team became a real team and willed itself back from the depths of despair‐‐‐by the end of the first week of October, they were sitting at 3‐4‐‐‐to finish the rest of the regular season at 9‐1‐1.

Thus the comeback against Kent that final day in the rain, the culmination of a five game road trip in which the boys had won the first four, and in many ways emblematic of a season long “comeback” was surely possible and a memory to treasure.

VARSITY FIELD HOCKEY 2009

First and foremost a huge thank you to our gentlemen and coaches in the football program for your generosity and kindness in sharing the TURF field with us this season. It truly made all the difference in our program this year!

Our favorite quote from the movie Friday Night Lights: "...Being perfect is not about the scoreboard out there. It is not about winning. It is about YOU and your relationship to yourself, your family and your friends...Being Perfect is about being able to look your friends in they eye and know that you didn't let them down, because you told them the truth...and that truth is that you did everything that you could. There wasn't one more thing that you could have done...Can you live in that moment? As best you can... with clear eyes and love in your heart...with joy in your heart? If you can do that... than you are Perfect...."

The plain and simple truth is that I have delayed writing this until the eleventh hour and the reason is, by putting pen to paper, the knowledge becomes reality, and the truth sinks in…our 2009 season is finally over. It has been a season I have wanted to hang on to, not because of our wins and loss column, but because of the young ladies who share this moment with me tonight.

Our three captains, Laura McConney, Abby Ostrom and Molly Paduda along with our senior leaders: Clair Stover, Maggie Liang, Courtney Gardner, Caroline George, Dana Lerner and Rae Lerner have been the core of our team’s grit this season. Juniors Emily Fluke and Shannon Ryan along with sophomores Krista Lamoreaux, and Cally Moran even out our core strength and returning pack this season. We were fortunate to have Alexandra Crerend back, albeit in a limited capacity, but we appreciate her help with the Cally in the GK this season. This fall we planned to “reload” for the future and have fun in the process; however, fresh talent arrived in the forms of Lindsay Gabow, Lindsey MacDonald, Katie Mandigo, Devin Markison and Katie Shea making our team deep in all positions.

The girls had a great run this fall; tying the top team in the league in the regular season we finished with an 11‐2‐2 league record and our first NE tournament berth since 2006. None of this would have been possible without the help of my assistant coach Jackie Mooney who stood where these young ladies stand now only 6 short years ago.

Realizing that history repeats itself I called on Karen Parsons in the LC Archives to help me do some digging about the field hockey program. I found out that field hockey was the first and only interscholastic sport that Chaffee played back in 1950 and I took it upon myself to email some of those ladies. I contacted members of the 1991 NE Championship team (the last team to win the title for LC). I was eager for their wisdom and advice to the girls. TJ Reap came into my office one day to find me all choked up. I was plowing through several of the email former LC FH players, all of whom were following our progress, had sent me. They were eager to share their experience and reminisce with the girls, all the while wishing us well. I had tears in my eyes from the supportive and encouraging words that were flowing through my email account. It was amazing.

I shared with them the Mission Statement that the team created for their season. I figured since the school was going through a NEASC review, the girls should know exactly what they stood for. It took the squad half a practice to put out on the board phrases, thoughts, statements they held as truth about who they were and what they wanted from their season, players took turns at the white board hammering out their thoughts and encouraging one another…it was then that these ladies became a true team and forged their place in LCFH history. Their season was impressive, actually my most successful yet, but it was their character that impressed me most, for this, I am eternally grateful. Thank you girls, for sharing this time with me; I am honored to have had the chance to work with you and Coach Mooney this fall.

THE LOOMIS CHAFFEE VARSITY FIELD HOCKEY MISSION STATEMENT: With courage in our hearts and pride in our steps, we play for the Five Founders of our school and for others who don’t have the opportunities we have. We give each other the courage and the strength to succeed. Putting everything on the line, never backing down, or under estimating another team. We are a team that plays as One. We bring intensity to every practice and game having no regrets at the end of the season. We will have respect for ourselves, and our opponents and will be role models for other Loomis Chaffee teams. We will play with our hearts, filled with fire and compassion, to win the game never forgetting that we are the underdogs. We will be “perfect”.

Rae Lerner: This year, for the Captains' Award, we have chosen a player who has evolved tremendously over this past year. Since we first stepped on the field this season, she has shown an incredible amount of determination, determination to fulfill the expectations placed upon her, to lead her teammates, and to realize her full potential as a player. We are proud to present Rae Lerner with the captains' award this year. Demonstrating her development, Rae inspired her teammates during our final game against Westminster. She said to the team during the timeout, “Guys, Chloe and I have the defensive end. We need to score, so let us do what we do best and push forward to score that goal.” This statement encompasses what Rae did for the team all year; she forced the team to play offensive and took care of the defensive end. Though her demeanor remained reserved, Rae became quite the force this year. She became our silent but deadly defender. For this, we present her with the captains’ award.

Coaches' Award: Laura McConney '11

As co‐captain of her team, Laura leads by example, setting a positive hard working tone every time she steps on the field. Whether helping to carry equipment or marking an open opponent, Laura does it all for the benefit of the team, never complaining, never blaming, never giving up. As a person and as a player, Conney is the epitome of poise and grace. She is one of the most unflappable, levelheaded, even‐keeled people I have ever met and whenever a game gets intense or a our team starts to get flustered, we always look to Conney as a constant presence of calm and focus. She brought the team together this season and without her leadership, her character, and her strong field hockey skills we never would have had such a successful season. We thank Conney for her incredible work this season and her genuine dedication to the team and most especially her teammates and we look forward to another exciting and competitive season with her next year. It is with great pride and pleasure that I present you this Coaches' Award.

Coaches' Award: Molly Paduda '10 Anyone that knows Molly knows that she exudes more energy, enthusiasm and encouragement in a single breath than most of us do in a week. As a coach I love that Molly constantly kept me on my toes and drove me to demand more from our team every day. Although a dangerous game of World Cup kept Molly out for part of the season, she never let this injury get her down or define who she would be as a player or a leader. The team consistently turned to Molly for guidance and support and being the generous and positive person and player that Molly is, she was always there to lend a helping hand, offer a bit of advice or just cheer on her teammates. As friendly and upbeat as Molly is, she is a fierce competitor and a force to be reckoned with on the field. Whether flying on a defensive corner, inserting to assist a ball into the cage or leading her team with strong communication, Molly was a pivotal member of this team and an indispensible part of our success. Although I cannot imagine LC Field Hockey without Molly, we look forward to seeing all that she will undoubtedly accomplish in the years to come. Congratulations on a wonderful season, Molly and thank you for all that you did for your coaches and teammates.

MVP: Emily Fluke '11 Flukie is one of the most talented, hard working and competitive players I know. Since she has been a part of the LC Field Hockey program, she has had a hand in every goal the team has scored. With 11 goals and 31 assists just this season, Flukie is a player whose offensive instincts and unparalleled stick skills have led her team to victory. Always playing through soreness and injury (even against her coaches' wishes at times), Fluke pushes herself to be the first to every ball and to do what is necessary for her team to succeed. Fluke's work ethic and determination to be the best sets her apart from her opponents and makes her a role model on the team. She is often one of the first ones on the field and the last one to leave after practicing just a few more shots on goal. I have no doubt that Flukie will make a great captain next year and that she will lead her team to an even more successful season. I happily present you this MVP award and hope you see it as a challenge to push yourself even harder. Congratulations, Fluke!
