Publisher: Riël Hauman ____________________________________________________________________ EDITORIAL One of the truly great athletics performances of all time was seen in Berlin on Sunday when Haile Gebrselassie became the first man to go under 2:04:00 for the marathon. Geb, who ran 2:03:59, now owns the top three marathon times in history. With this he slashed his previous world record by 27 seconds and brought the average of his five fastest marathons down to an amazing 2:05:07. Set up as a time trial, the race produced a thrilling contest, with relatively unknown James Kwambai finishing second in 2:05:36, an improvement of almost 5 minutes on his personal best. Kwambai kept Geb company up to 36 km, when even he had to concede to the greatest marathon runner on the planet. In the women’s race Irinia Mikitenko broke through the 2:20:00 barrier with her 2:19:19 win, a national record and the second fastest time in the history of the race. Mikitenko accelerated towards the end and her last full 5 km were run in 16:17, with the last 2.195 km passing in 6:57 – just 32 seconds slower than Gebrselassie.
