MEMORIAL FLOWERS The Altar flowers this morning are given in memory of Polly C. Horn.

Language In Worship: Because language has the power to shape our thinking about one another, All Saints Church makes every effort to bring the language of worship into conformity with the principles of biblical theology that affirm that the personhood of God embraces all expressions of gender lovingly and equally. Therefore, in our worship, we take our Bible readings from an inclusive language lectionary, that is often truer to original sources in references to people, and expands our concept of God beyond exclusively masculine terms. In Prayer Book liturgies we make minimal but symbolically important changes which denote our commitment to inclusive expression. Some historical texts that are widely known and loved are left unaltered. The words of the liturgy are from the 1979 Book of Common Prayer. The readings are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible, lectionary year A, as well as from The Message and from Inclusive Hebrew Scriptures and New Testament published by Priests for Equality.

Assisted listening devices are available at the Accessibility table on the lawn, for use at the 9:00 and 11:15 services and Rector’s Forum.

We ask that you extend a respectful courtesy to others by silencing all devices when entering the Sanctuary.

PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP IN GOD’S NAME

PRAYER OF MEDITATION As the people gather before the service begins, we encourage you to use the following prayer for meditation. Holy One, your Spirit moves in provocative ways. Though evil seeks false peace, you shake things up. You turn things upside down. You leave us surprised and inspired. When we are confronted by the radical nature of your love, do not let us push you away or remain unchanged. May we embrace discomfort with joy, that we might be friends of justice and companions to peace. Amen.

VOLUNTARY Played by Grace Chung.

MINISTRY OF THE WORD

ENTRANCE HYMN “Hail to the Lord’s Anointed” Stand — all who are able — as the procession enters the church; everyone sings.

—Words: James Montgomery (1771–1854) Music: Es flog ein kleins Waldvögelein, German Folk song

SALUTATION Remain standing. 9:00 Susan Russell 11:15 Sally Howard Minister: Blessed be the one, holy, and living God. People: Glory to God for ever and ever.

COLLECT FOR PURITY Remain standing. Minister and People: Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

6

GLORIA Remain standing; everyone sings.

1. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill to all. 2. We praise you, we bless you, we worship you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory.

—Setting: Perla Moré (d. 1985), Misa Cubana

COLLECT OF THE DAY Minister: God dwells in you. People: And also in you. Minister: Let us pray. Remain standing; silence is kept. Minister: Almighty and everlasting God, you govern all things both in heaven and on earth: Mercifully hear the supplications of your people, and in our time grant us your peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

7

LESSON Seated. 9:00 Alma Stokes 11:15 Paul Keeley A Reading from Micah (6:1–8). Hear what our God says: Come and plead your case before the mountains, and let the hills hear your voice. Listen to God’s indictment, you mountains, and you enduring foundations of the earth; for God has a dispute with the people, and is putting Israel on trial. My people, what have I done to you? How have I wearied you? Give me an answer! For I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and redeemed you from the house of slavery; and I sent Moses to lead you, and Aaron, and Miriam! Recall how God brought you justice! What shall I bring when I come before God, and bow down before the Most High? Am I to come before God with burnt offerings? With year-old calves? Will God be placated with thousands of rams or ten thousand rivers of oil? Should I offer my firstborn for my wrongdoings – the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? Listen here, mortal: God has already made abundantly clear what “good” is, and what is required from you: simply do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God. Minister: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People: Thanks be to God.

A period of silence is observed following the reading.

ANTHEM Remain seated. Sung by the Trouvères. My Good Lord’s Done Been Here My Good Lord's done been here, blest my soul and gone away. Never did I think that he was so nigh, he spoke and he made me laugh and cry. Sinner better mind how you walk on the cross, your foot might slip and your soul get lost. —Traditional spiritual: arr. by Moses Hogan (1957–2003) Choral adapt. And arr. by Rollo Dilworth (b. 1970)

HYMN “What Does the Lord Require” Standing — all who are able; everyone sings.

8

GOSPEL Remain standing. 9:00 Lynn Jay 11:15 Susan Russell Minister: The Good News of Jesus as written in Matthew (5:1–12). People: Glory is yours, O Christ. When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” Minister: The Gospel of the Savior. People: Praise to you, O Christ.

Children in kindergarten – fifth grade are invited to follow the banner to the Learning Center for Children’s Chapel.

CONSECRATION Kneeling or standing — all who are able. Priest: We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In Christ, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In Christ, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper Jesus took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore, according to his command, O God, Priest and People: We remember Christ’s death, We proclaim Christ’s resurrection, We await Christ’s coming in glory;

14

Priest: And we offer our praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Priest and People: Unite us to your Son in his self-offering, that we may be acceptable through Christ, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, align all things with your love, and bring us to that heavenly country where with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your children; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty God, now and for ever. Amen. Priest: And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, in the language of your heart, we are bold to say, Priest and People: Our Father, who art in heaven, Padre Nuestro que estás en el 我们在天上的父, hallowed be thy Name, cielo, santificado sea tu Nombre, 愿你的名被尊为圣,愿你的国降临, thy kingdom come, thy will be venga tu reino, hágase tu 愿你的旨意行在地上,如同行在天上。 done, on earth as it is in heaven. voluntad, en la tierra como en el 我们日用的饮食,求父今日赐给我们。 Give us this day our daily bread. cielo.
