Annual Report 2006-2007 1

MISSION STATEMENT

The purpose of Habitat for Humanity of Evansville is to help fulfill the greater mission of Habitat for Humanity International to eliminate poverty housing in the world. We seek to witness to and implement the Gospel of Jesus Christ in Evansville, , and throughout the world by building homes with God’s people in need and by working with them to create a better neighborhood and community in which to live and work. 2

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Habitat Supporter,

Thank you very much for all you have done to make the past year one of unprecedented growth for Habitat for Humanity of Evansville.

During fiscal year 2006–2007, infrastructure development of the New Haven subdivision was a primary focus, setting the stage for an aggressive building schedule where 27 houses were completed and owner-occupied by early fiscal year 2007–2008. While this monumental effort was under way, Habitat for Humanity of Evansville was able to con- struct 9 houses with traditional families and 2 houses with Operation Home Again families outside of the subdivision. These 11 families—22 children and 12 adults—now enjoy the reality of homeownership.

Your generous financial contributions—in excess of $1.3 million—made this possible. How fortunate we are to live in a community which makes safe and decent shelter for all God’s people a matter of conscience and action.

We are grateful to God and to all of you for giving us the opportunity to serve this wonderful organization.

In Christian partnership,

Jodi Uebelhack Stephen Thomas President, 2005–2007 President Board of Directors Board of Directors 3

HOW IT WORKS

Habitat for Humanity of Evansville works with families who earn less than 60 per cent of the area median income. Families must demonstrate a need for housing, have the ability to pay off a 25-year, zero-interest mortgage, and be willing to contribute 300 hours of sweat equity to build their own home and help other families build theirs. Families must also attend homeownership training classes to learn skills in home maintenance and financial management.

Every time a Habitat homeowner makes a mortgage pay- ment, it goes to the “Fund for Humanity.” Those monies, in turn, help build more houses for others. Through sweat equity investment, skill development on the job site, and mentoring from dedicated volunteers, Habitat home- owners are fully invested in the program and empowered to break the cycle of poverty. This is the genius of Habitat for Humanity—personal empowerment leading to lasting transformational change.

Habitat for Humanity of Evans- ville relies on people from all walks of life to volunteer on the job site and to support the ministry financially. In return, they receive the hundredfold—the deep real- ization that a lasting legacy can only be achieved through a life of loving service. 5

MAKING AN IMPACT

Congratulations to the families whose houses were completed between July 1, 2006 and June 30, 2007.

VOLUNTEERS MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Although the total number of Habitat’s volunteer groups is a continuously shifting target, the following list gives some indica- tion of just how many different individuals it takes to keep our ministry growing and thriving: Board of Directors, Church Relations Council, Construc- tion Committee, Development Committee, Family Selection Committee, Land Acquisi- tion Committee, Public Relations Committee, Operation Home Again Committee, Pastors’ Advisory Council, Partner Family Council, Strategic Planning Engagement Teams, Good Sports Build Committee, Planned Giving Task Force, Office Volunteers, and the Tuesday, Wednesday and Concrete Crews.

In fiscal year 2006–2007, over 5,600 people volunteered for Habitat for Humanity of Evansville. With a ratio of over 802 volunteers per staff member, our ministry is truly powered by the hands and hearts of many.

Habitat for Humanity of Evansville is extremely fortunate to have dedicated volunteers who work tire- lessly to move our organiza- tion forward. Volunteers are our loyal advocates—contin- ually educating their fami- lies, friends, and colleagues about what Habitat is, who it serves, and how it works. 7

TITHE PARTNERS

Every time Habitat for Humanity of Evansville builds a house locally, a tithe contribution is sent to either Jordan, in the Middle East, or Botswana, in southern Africa, and a house is built there. Since Habitat for Humanity of Evansville began tithing in 1988, we’ve fostered houses for 261 families overseas.

Tithing is a world-wide Habitat for Humanity International program, and it does not mean that monies are just sent from industrial- ized countries to developing ones. For example, Habitat of Guatemala recently sent a check for $4,000 to two affili- ates in North Carolina and Virginia. All three areas had experienced devastation from flooding and felt a kindred spirit. Likewise, an affiliate in Romania, who receives help from San Diego, Calif., sends tithes to Habitat of Armenia.

During the 2006–2007 fiscal year, Habitat for Humanity of Evansville received word that we had been named a recipi- ent of the coveted Malachi 3:10 Award. This award, given by Habitat for Humanity International, recognizes affiliates who have given over $500,000 to internation- al house building. The num- ber of Malachi 3:10 affiliates is very small, fewer than 25. The award, which is proudly displayed in Habitat for 8

TITHE PARTNERS

Humanity of Evansville’s Board room, is inscribed with the Biblical injunction:

“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room for it.”

Representatives from our two partner countries applaud Evansville’s tithe support.

“Talking about the Habitat for Humanity of Botswana (HFHB) success story is incomplete without mentioning the Evansville affiliate,” says Kabelo Seadimo, HFHB’s National Director. “Evansville has emerged to be a true friend to us, and we continue to serve more people from their support.”

“Habitat for Humanity of Evansville’s strong tithe support for Habitat Jordan is contributing to steady growth,” National Director of Habitat Jordan, Philip Griffith states. “In 2008 we will serve 100 families and hope to increase that number to 150 in 2009. Thank you, Evansville!” 9
