ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES

The village has plenty of land suitable as plantation, which is the centre of economic activities in Kampung Belakang Pasar. Villagers are mostly owners of orchards and fruits and vegetables commonly planted are guava trees, rose apples and petai (bitter bean). They harvest the crops for local sales rather than export. However, small quantities of guava are sold in other states and even exported to Singapore. Hence, there are good prospects for the guava, rose apple and petai (bitter bean) business outside the

The drainage system is in satisfactory condition, but sometimes garbage is found in the drains.

Garbage collection in Kampung Belakang Pasar is adequate.

PROBLEMS

According to the villagers, main problems faced by Kampung Belakang Pasar are as follows:  Lack of job opportunities. This is causing village population to decline, as the sources of income are not enough to cover daily expenses and most of the youths have left for other cities, such as Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh and others in order to survive. The elderly villagers are worried the village will suffer the consequences of “aging population", as all their children have gone away to find work.

 Security. Security needs improvement, as cases of robbery, drug taking and other negative elements have been reported. These have caused villagers anxiety in their daily activities. The road system also needs upgrading, as potholes on the roads will affect the safety of drivers and passengers in the village.

Potholes on the road

 Lack of facilities. Due to limited facilities, most of the government offices are only available in the nearest town, Tapah. The hospital is also located in Tapah. This is very inconvenient for villagers who have to travel around 20 minutes to reach their destination. There are no amusement places, such as playground for the children or elderly. SMJK Choong Hua is currently facing insufficient classrooms due to high enrolment, as the school is nearest the village.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Job opportunities. Future expansion should be taken into consideration. For instance, they should expand their business to provide more job opportunities in the village. One way is by requesting the government to build a small shopping center on an idle piece of land that is suitable for this purpose. The new shopping mall will not only help create job opportunities, it will also provide convenience to the villagers. It can also include public services, such as “Jabatan Imigresen ” and others in order to solve the

12

KAMPUNG BELAKANG PASAR

problem of lack of facilities in the village. In addition, villagers could go into home- based businesses, as there are orchards and plantations in the village. They can take the opportunity to create a business with special and innovative foods or beverages.

Security. A village head can be appointed to establish a patrol team at night to ensure the safety of villagers. Other than that, having a police station nearby will mean more patrols. Moreover, the authorities should be requested to repair the roads that have potholes. Otherwise, the residents can take the initiative to repair the road by themselves with some stones.

Better infrastructure and social amenities. This will certainly benefit the villagers. For example, having public facilities, such as playground, basketball court, sports fields will give villagers a place to get together and build their relationships with each other. Most importantly, build a hospital, which provides convenience as serious illnesses can be treated in the village, and with immediate treatment, the mortality rate may be reduced. Currently, patients with serious health issues will be sent from Tapah Hospital to Ipoh Hospital and they incur long travelling time. Education. The government should provide more transportation services to allow students to pursue their education in other primary schools that are far from the village.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Villagers can establish their own business by producing special and innovative foods or beverages that will raise the profile of the village for tourists, and also enhance the income of the village. To address the issue of public transport problems, villagers can also create car pool services or provide services similar to e-hailing to generate additional income.
