We are not talking about just any ”average-Jensen,” when it comes to the silversmith whose first name is Georg. In 1904 he founded what has since become one of the greatest successes in the history of . At a time when traditional craftsmanship was otherwise threa- tened by the mass production of industrialisation, the Georg Jensen silver smithy in Bredgade paved the way for a whole new freedom in the design of silver. One of the fascinating things about the company Georg Jensen is that you are invited on a unique journey through the 20th century’s changing styles. Now the 150th anniversary of Georg Jensen’s birth is approaching. This is being celebrated with the exhibition “Georg Jensen – A Tale of Danish Silver” at Kol- dinghus Castle, and we mark the occasion with a wide selection of silver works created by the company’s trendsetting designers. We find a fine example of Art Deco with Sigvard Bernadot- te’s rare table clock, while the more modernistic tones are struck by Henning Koppel with his three-branch candelabrum from 1946 and the impressive dish with a sculptural foot, which he designed two years after (cat. no. 1143, 1148 and 1147). You can read more about Georg Jensen on p. 14, or come and hear silversmith Claes Hansted talk about his 25 years at Georg Jensen on Friday 20 November at 3 pm in our preview rooms at Bredgade 33.

We stay with the Art Deco of the 1920s with the curious and unique longcase clock called ”The Pyramid Clock” from 1928. Its clockwork was created by Jens Olsen, who is famous for his ”World Clock” at Copenhagen’s City Hall. The practitioners of Art Deco focused on past, foreign and exotic cultures. The clock’s Egyptian-themed decorations testify that the opening of the enigmatic pharaoh Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922 was in the public spotlight. The Swe- dish interpretation of Art Deco is called ”Swedish Grace”, and its representatives include Erik Mattsson and Carl Bergsten, who are the makers of two of the auction’s beautiful and unique cabinets – the music cabinet for notes and the very early cabinet with marquetry in the shape of flowers with mother of pearl (cat. no. 1279, 1242 and 1220).

The auction also offers ceramic art of a unique quality, centred on the two craftsmen Axel Salto and Alev Siesbye. The colossal vase made of stoneware from 1945 is modelled in Salto’s characteristic budding style with fruits and branches. As an opposite to this style stands Sies- bye’s large turquoise table bowl. Siesbye grew up in an intellectual and creative environment in Istanbul, yet she achieved her real breakthrough in Denmark in the early 1970s - a time when Danish ceramics were dominated by coarse structures and earth tones. She therefore caused quite a stir with her bright, light and almost floating bowls with silky glazes inspired by Medi- terranean colours (cat. no. 1170 and 1182).

You can also find all the usual furniture classics by our greatest Danish architects Finn Juhl, Hans J. Wegner, Ib Kofod-Larsen, Viggo Boesen, Kaare Klint, and more.

Georg Jensen (1866-1935) had great artistic ambitions right form the start. He was trained as a goldsmith in 1886, but continued his studies as a sculptor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in 1892. From here his path led him to become a ceramic designer, but after a stay in Paris during the years 1900-1 he returned to his starting point, and silver became his favourite artistic material. In 1904 and at the age of 37 Georg Jensen opened the silver smithy in Bredgade 36, which quickly gained international recognition. The smithy’s ar- tistic idiom and quality of craftsmanship revolutionized Danish artistic crafts, and he managed to attract the best designers of the day, which became the seed for the company’s early success. His starting point was Art Nouveau, which in Det Kongelige Bibliotek, Denmark was known as ”skønvirke”, and his work is characterized by the style’s © Copenhagen soft lines and organic ornamentation. This effort is incarnated in the grape motif, which he became particularly known for.

861_design_s001-236.indd 27 05/11/15 15.18 Johan Rohde

Johan Rohde (1856-1935) was a bit of a multi-artist. Originally he was educated as a doctor, but at a mature age he wanted to live the life of an artist and became one of the most important figures in Danish art, artistic crafts and art criticism in the years around 1900. He rebelled against the established art scene in Denmark and was heavily influenced by international trends. Rohde’s work as a whole is in line with the ideals of the Art Nouveau style about a “Gesamtkunstværk,” where all the arts play together in harmony. In 1906 he began his lifelong collabora- tion with Georg Jensen, where he with his traditional ornamentation retained the tradition of the smithy. His silver works were, however, in their simplicity and respect for the possibilities of the material, also in many ways ahead of current Georg Jensen A/S trends and pointed towards the functionalism that would only become modern © decades later. Johan Rohde is especially known for the “Acorn” flatware, which he designed in 1915.

Harald Nielsen (1892-1977) became an apprentice as a chaser at Georg Jensen in 1909 and later became the silver smithy’s artistic director. Influenced by the idiom of Art Deco Harald Nielsen found his own way and used distinct references to nature. His work is both a contrast to Georg Jensen’s lush designs and Johan Rohde’s simple lines. He placed high artistic demands on both his own and his colleagues’ designs, and for him the ornament was never allowed to overshadow the design and vice versa. Harald Nielsen had a special eye for what was in demand, and he created some of the company’s biggest sales successes, such as the “Pyramid” flatware from 1926. © Georg Jensen A/S

Sigvard Bernadotte (1907-2002) was only 23 years old, when he in 1930 was hired by Georg Jensen. He was the second oldest son of Sweden’s King Gustav VI Adolf and was educated as an art historian at the University of Uppsala. Despite the fact that Georg Jensen’s products were a commercial success, they were met with strong criticism for being pretentious and out-dated in the late 1920s. Bernadotte’s design met this criticism and broke with every- thing Georg Jensen had previously produced, and he is seen as the person who truly renewed the work of the silver smithy. He sought a pronounced simplicity in his timeless design, removed all superfluous decoration and instead worked with straight lines and geometrical shapes. © Georg Jensen A/S

Henning Koppel (1918-81) grew up in a culturally radical environment in the interwar period, and he was part of the circle around , and Alvar Aalto. He initially wanted to become a sculptor, and after his time at the sculptor school at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts he went to Paris and became acquainted with the modern trends of contemporary art. At the end of World War II Georg Jensen hired him, and the relationship would prove re- warding for both parties. Koppel became probably the most significant designer in Georg Jensen’s history, and his modern approach to the design fused the ideals of functionalism with the silver. For him, the sculptural form was the most im- portant, and he preferred smooth surfaces and had a predilection for asymmetry. Georg Jensen A/S The collaboration with Georg Jensen lasted until Koppel’s death, and he left a © portfolio of innovative silver products - from jewellery and watches to hollow- ware and flatware. Among the most famous is the pitcher “Pregnant Duck” from 1952 and the “Fish Dish” from 1954.

Upon his return to Denmark, he began at the school of sculpture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and was hired by Georg Jensen the same year. Over the next four decades he became a prominent figure for the company, where he tried to preserve Georg Jensen’s original principles while adding a modern touch to the products. He was inspired by the era’s Art Deco movement and was in favour of a more simple design. In 1925 he received a gold medal at the World Exhibition in Paris.

Jørgen Møller (b. 1930) was educated as an architect and industrial designer in 1961. He founded his own design studio in Fredensborg in 1969, and his idiom was nurtured by the collaboration with Arne Jacobsen up through the 1960s. For Jørgen Møller functionality was paramount, and he strove for the art of simplicity. From 1981 he made his mark at Georg Jensen with his clocks, candlesticks, lamps, pitchers and the popular products with the elephant motif.

Unique longcase clock of multiple sorts hardwood, richly decorated with Egyptian motifs inspired by Tutankhamun's tomb, designed by Jens Jacob Bregnø. Decorations painted by Poul Jørgensen. Carpentry by cabinet- maker Thomas Georg Madsen. Clockwork made and dated 1927 by Jens Olsen. Case and pillar made and dated 1928. H. 212 cm. Provenance: Arbejdernes Landsbank (a Danish bank). Made by and for artistic cabinetmaker Thomas Georg Madsen. After his death in 1933 the clock was sold on his estate auction where Karl Kiefer, founder of Arbejdernes Landsbank, bought it. The clock was in- herited by his daughters, Erna Christensen & Edith Kiefer upon his death in 1946. They donated the clock to Arbejdernes Landsbank in 1985.

The Art Deco style is characterized by among other things an eclectic inspiration and choice of materi- als from exotic cultures. This trait can be seen most clearly in the "pure" French Art Deco, where the style first emerged. Pure Art Deco style is only found in very limited supply in Denmark, and the "Pyramid Clock" is a rare example of the very purest form of Art Deco style with its extremely high quality and luxurious conception in combination with the exotic, Egyptian ornamentation.
