Renowned as a center of tourism and culture, Lucerne is also a capital of education where the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts plays an important role. With an enrollment of approximately 3,000 in the bachelor program and over 1,500 in its professional development programs, the university is the largest higher edu- cation institute in central . Its five schools, which specialize in engineering and architecture, business, social work, art and design, and music, make it a power- ful driver of business and cultural life in central Switzerland and the Lucerne region in particular. As one of the country‘s eight of applied sciences, it is an in- tegral part of the Swiss higher education system.

Its innovative and attractive programs on both the bachelor and the master levels are designed to encourage students to explore a wide range of interdisciplinary studies – and in turn allow the university to offer specialized courses as well. Hands- on programs geared to the needs of clients and their employers have made the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts a leader in Switzerland in the area of professional development. The university also offers postgraduate courses that confer a Master of Advanced Studies, Diploma of Advanced Studies, or Certificate of Advanced Studies upon completion.

The school takes part in research projects aimed at putting theoretical concepts into practice. For example, the Prevention Foundation recently commissioned a pro- ject to find ways of reducing damage to building facades caused by extremely high winds. Another project involved working with Microsoft Switzerland and other partners to examine the state of IT security in small- and medium-sized enterprises. In co- operation with the city and , as well as the FC Lucerne, the univer- sity has developed a concept to promote peaceful and creative ways of behaving for soccer fans.

On a broader scale, networking and collaborating with other universities and institutes here and abroad is becoming ever more important. While this development boosts the mobility of students and instructors, it also opens up new prospects for research projects.

Comprehensive music education in Lucerne, the city of music The Lucerne School of Music has established itself as an internationally renowned conservatory. Its close ties to other cultural institutions are of particular significance: the Lucerne Festival Academy, Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, and the Luzerner Theater. The curriculum emphasizes the importance of practical artistic experience gained in performances. Its superior course offerings allow students a great deal of freedom in combining the subjects they take. The program‘s cornerstones constitute jazz and classical music, music and movement, and sacral music. In addition, students can specialize in music pedagogy, instrumental training (including voice), interpretation and performance, composition; folk, chamber and orchestral music; opera, conducting (choir, brass band, orchestra), and music theory.
