Excellent anthologyBy New River Valley OutdorsmanA lot of really good stories here. I read a lot of Golden Age stuff and this volume included many not often anthologized. A few hoary old chestnuts like Asimov's "Youth," but for the most part very well written tales by skilled writers, mostly from the mid '50's, the peak of the Golden Age. Only way to improve it would be to include some Heinlein....0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. DisappointingBy Paul HartigRather disappointing reading. I made it through most of the stories, except for the last one, which went on and on in rather pointless battle scene after battle scene. I found some of the terminology off-putting: "Geeks," for example. I continued reading, hoping that this terminology would eventually be shown to be in poor taste, but as far as I could find, this never happened, so I skimmed through the remaining chapters and eventually gave up. Since this was the longest story , at the book's conclusion, I assumed it would be the best in the book. It wasn't.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. reminder of a golden ageBy SteveSome of the stories are classics (Dick's "Second Variety"), some are duds (Asimov's "Youth"). In general the stories are ok - a pleasant reminder of a golden age of science fiction. The kindle book's layout leaves a lot to be desired. The table of contents doesn't list the author's name and there is no info on date of publication. Space Science Fiction' was launched in may of 1952. During it's impressive run it published many of Science Fiction's top writers. Collected here in this massive six hundred-plus page anthology are all of the most important stories that were published during its distinguished run. Included here are: 'Second Variety' by Philip K. Dick; 'Youth' by Isaac Asimov; 'To Each His Star' by Bryce Walton; 'Security' by Poul Anderson; 'Divinity' by William Morrison; 'The Hour of Battle' by Robert Sheckley; 'Instant of Decision' by Randall Garrett; 'Let 'em Breathe Space!' By Lester Del Rey; 'The Ultroom Error' by Jerry Sohl; 'Infinite Intruder' by Alan E. Nourse; 'Collectivum' by Mike Lewis; 'The Adventurer' by C. M. Kornbluth; 'Decision' by Frank M. Robinson; 'Pursuit' by Lester del Rey; 'Exile' by H. B. Fyfe; 'Stop Look and Dig' by George O. Smith; 'The Worshippers' by Damon Knight; 'The Hunters' by William Morrison; 'The Ego Machine' by Henry Kuttner; 'The Variable Man' by Philip K. Dick; and 'Ullr Uprising' by H. Beam Piper. About the AuthorTo list Isaac Asimov's honors, as to list his books, would be excessive. Let it simply be noted that Isaac Asimov was the most famous, most honored, most widely read, and most beloved science fiction author of all time. In his five decades as an author, he wrote more than four hundred books, won every award his readers and colleagues could contrive to give him, and provided pleasure and insight to millions. He died in 1992, still at work. The bestselling author of such classic novels as "Brain Wave" and "The Boat of a Million Years", Poul Anderson won just about every award the science fiction and fantasy field has to offer. He has won multiple Hugos and Nebulas, the John W. Campbell Award, The Locus Poll Award, the Skylark Award, and the SFWA Grandmaster Award for Lifetime Achievement. His books include "Harvest of Stars, The Stars are also On Fire, Operation Chaos, Operation Luna, Genesis, Mother of Kings, " and" Going for Infinity", a collection and retrospective of his life's work. Poul Anderson lived in Orinda, California where he passed away in 2001. [3jJgF.ebook] Space Science Fiction Super Pack By Philip K. 22 TIGHTBEAM Those multiple points of connection—and favorites—indicate the show’s position of preference in popular culture, and Tennant said he’s consistently surprised by how Doctor Who fandom and awareness has spread internationally—despite its British beginnings. “Doctor Who is part of the cultural furniture in the UK,” he said. “It’s something that’s uniquely British, that Britain is proud of, and that the British are fascinated by.” Now, when Tennant is recognized in public, he can determine how much a fan of the show the person is based on what they say to him. “If someone says, ‘Allons-y!’ chances are they’re a fan,” he said. Most people say something like, “Where’s your Tardis?” or “Aren’t you going to fix that with your sonic screwdriver?” There might be one thing that all fans can agree on. Perhaps—as Tennant quipped—Doctor Who Day, Nov. 23 (which marks the airing of the first episode, “An Unearthly Child”) should be a national holiday. Regardless of what nation—or planet—you call home. Old School Dungeons & Dragons™ Inspirational Reading List 2008 Edition Edited by Kellri [email protected] http://kellri.blogspot.com While there are bookcases in the upper studio, elsewhere on the second floor, and on the first floor, the main repository of printed lore (other than that piled here and there) is my basement library which includes thousands of reference works, maps, magazines, and works of fiction. - E. Gary Gygax Some guidelines for future contributors: (1) No Forgotten Realms/Dragonlance/etc. tie-ins. This is not a list of licensed gaming fiction. You’ll thank me later. (2) No campaign journals, fan-written fiction or other unpublished/amateur work. See (1). (3) No gaming sourcebooks, modules, rulebooks or magazines (unless they contain reprinted or original fiction). For a list of old school gaming materials, surf to the Acaeum. (4) Include in-line links to the material. In some cases these books are available online for free, if not, they are available from Amazon. Several gaming-related reader’s lists are already available at Amazon, and can be a decent way to find reviews for many of these books. c.f. http://www.amazon.com/D-Inspirational-Educational-Reading-Appendix/lm/2K4BPQB553DZ1 (5) A descriptive blurb would be great, or optionally a short list of keywords or tags for the DM looking for specific inspiration. Examples might include ELVES, DUNGEON, DRAGON, THIEVES, OGRES, etc. (6) In the case of series or trilogies, please include the titles of the individual books if possible. (7) Several of the authors listed below may need an updated or expanded listing.
