1.0 Introduction

Great Horwood is home to 3,074 people and provides 900 jobs in 265 businesses. Of these businesses, 17 (6.4 per cent) are Buckinghamshire Business First members.

There were 1,569 employed people aged 16-74 living in Great Horwood ward at the 2011 Census, 127 more than the 1,442 recorded in 2001. Over that period the working age population fell 136 to 1,995 while the total population rose 269 to 3,074. The number of households rose by 90 (8.2 per cent) to 1,187. This was the 10th largest increase of all wards in Buck household numbers.

The largest companies in Great Horwood include:

 D G & R G Young;  Buckinghamshire Scaffolding Specialists;  Casa Grande Kitchens Ltd;  Cooper Armer Trading Co Ltd;  Country Hardwood Conservatories;  Great Horwood Church of Combined School; and  M K Hydropoics Centre.

There are 11 Great Horwood, representing 0.6 per cent of working age residents, including five claimants aged 18-24 and five who have been claiming for more than six months.

Commercial fibre coverage (as provided by BT) is set to cover 30 per cent Great Horwood by 2015. The Connected Countiesi project run by BBF will deliver a further 64 per cent through intervention in the , Shenley Church End and Winslow exchange areas. The project will deliver extended superfast footprint via additional funding, adaptation of downstream technology and contract claw-back mechanism. The Universal Service Commitment will address all premises where speeds are below 2 Mbps.

At the time of the 2001 Censusii, of the 1,535 employed residents 453 people lived and worked in the ward, with the most common destinations by local authority district being:

2.0 Industrial structure

There are 265 businesses located in Great Horwood employing 900 people. Of these businesses, 227 are micro businesses, employing fewer than 10 people.

Great Horwood -up is largely dominated by the property sector which makes up 11.9 per cent of employment in the ward; this ranks Great Horwood at 92nd of all wards in the country. This is significantly higher than the national average and accounts for the trends as identified in Chart 1. Other over-represented sectors include motor trades and construction which have a proportion of 5.2 per cent and 10.6 per cent respectively. Great Horwood is ranked 871st of all wards for employment in the motor trades sector and 1590th of all wards for employment in construction.

2.1 The Industrial Strategy and the Plan for Growth

sustainable economic growth. The Plan for Growth and the Industrial Strategy set out policies to realise this objective and to rebalance the economy, which include focusing on sectors expected to deliver strong -represented in these sectors, particularly aerospace, the information economy and professional and business services.

While Great Horwood provides jobs in these sectors, the industrial strategy sector where the ward delivers the highest share of national employment is professional and business services, which accounts for 16.9 per cent of employment. This is a very significant proportion of employment in the ward and ranks Great Horwood at 1076th among English wards.

Shown in Table 1 below is the proportion of jobs in Great Horwood in the Industrial Strategy sectors. These are the largest industrial strategy sectors in the ward and both

At 18.8 per cent, the proportion of Great Horwood jobs in the professional & business services sector is the 799th highest of all wards in England and exceeds the district, county and national level.

3.0 Labour market

At 69.1 per cent of 16-74 year olds, Great Horwood highest in the country. Great Horwood has a proportion of 39.2 per cent of its residents qualified to degree level or higher. Furthermore, 56.4 per cent work in managerial, professional or technical occupations.

In Aylesbury Vale the wards most similar to Great Horwood are , and , with 20 of the other 35 wards among the thousand closest matches. The least similar ward in the district is , one of three wards in Aylesbury to rank lower than the 6,000th closest match along with Gatehouse and .

Great Horwood has a relatively low level of those who work from home and are self- employed, reflecting the importance if professional and business services to the ward. Great Horwood ranks among the top quartile of all English wards for working from home, self-employment, working in managerial, professional and technical occupations, holding degree level qualification and employment rate.

4.0 Occupational Structure

Great Horwood remunerated occupations, with 56.4 per cent of working residents employed in managerial, professional and technical occupations, ranking in the top quartile nationally for managerial, technical and professional occupations. In contrast Great Horwood ranks in the bottom quartile for all other occupations except administrative occupations., with only 5.4 and 4.0 per cent of working residents employed in sales/customer service and process plant and machinery operating occupations.

Buckinghamshire has the lowest level of economic deprivation of any Local Enterprise Partnership, with Aylesbury Vale having the 37th lowest economic deprivation of all 326 local authority districts in England, behind South Bucks (10th) and Chiltern (13th) but ahead of Wycombe (69th). Chart 4 demonstrates the concentration of Aylesbury V among the least deprived in England with 17 of the 36 wards featuring among the least deprived 10 per cent of all wards in England and only six ranking among the most deprived half of English wards, a stark contrast to the London Borough of Newham where no ward ranks above halfway, highlighting the challenge Aylesbury Vale faces to attract resource tackle deprivation.

Great Horwood has the 514th lowest economic deprivation of the 7,707 wards in England and the 8th least economically deprived of the 36 Aylesbury Vale wards. Great Horwood is the 33rd least economically deprived among the 108 ward in Buckinghamshire. Great Horwood ranks 6595th out of all wards in England based on the Index of Multiple Deprivation; this makes it among the less deprived wards in England. The rank is just above the average rank in Aylesbury Vale of 6006th and demonstrates that the ward is less deprived than the district as a whole.

6.0 Demography

At 41.0 years, Great Horwood above the 40.0 recorded across Aylesbury Vale and matches the county average which is also 41.0. This makes Great Horwood one of the older wards in the district as suggested in Chart 6. In terms of age structure, two of the wards in Aylesbury Vale most similar to Great Horwood are Cheddington and both of which have average ages of 40.9.

Great Horwood has a slightly higher proportion of working age residents than Aylesbury Vale at only 64.9 per cent. This ranks Great Horwood at 2,581st of all wards in England based on proportion of residents at working age. Great Horwood has a significantly high proportion of those aged 0-15 at 20.6 per cent. This ranks Great Horwood at 1,735th of all wards in England putting it among some of the youngest wards in the country.

7.0 Educational attainment

Aylesbury Vale is one of the best qualified places in the country, with only 17.8 per cent of residents aged 16 and over holding no qualifications, well below the 22.5 per cent recorded across the country as a whole, while 32.0 per cent hold degree level qualifications, well above the national level of 27.4 per cent.

7.1.1 Thornborough Infant School (Key Stage 1)

In 2012, 100 per cent of pupils attained Level 2 or higher in the Key Stage 1 reading, writing and mathematics assessments, This placed the school in the highest quintile for each subject. Attendance at the school was 95.5 per cent which was an increase of 0.9 percentage points on the previous year. The school was placed in the 3rd quintile of all schools with regards to attendance.

7.1.2 Wadden Church of England First School (Key Stage 1)

In 2012, 100 per cent of pupils attained Level 2 or higher in the Key Stage 1 reading, writing and mathematics assessments, This placed the school in the highest quintile for each subject. The attendance for this school was 96 per cent which was an increase by 0.7 percentage points. The attendance rate is in the top 40% of all schools.

7.1.3 Great Horwood Church of England Combined (Key Stage 2)

In 2012, 100 per cent of pupils attained Level 2 or higher in the Key Stage 1 English (overall) and reading assessments, this placed the school in the highest quintile for each subject. In the same year, 85 per cent of pupils attained Level 4 or above in the Key Stage 2 writing assessment placing it in the third highest quintile of all schools. In mathematics, 92% of pupils attained Level 4 or above in Key Stage 2, an increase of 6 percentage points on 2011. The school was place in the top 40% for mathematics out of all schools.

In English, 100% of pupils attained their expected progress placing the school in the highest quintile of all schools. In Mathematics, 92% of pupils achieved their expected progress which is an increase of 6 percentage points since 2011. This placed the school in the 2nd quintile of all schools. The attendance rate for the school was 95.3 per cent, a decrease in 0.6 percentage points since 2011. The attendance is in the bottom 40 per cent of all schools.
