The Artisan Quarter is perhaps Lyme’s best kept secret. The Encompassed by Coombe Street and Church Street, and with Artisan the historic Town Mill complex as the hub, this area of the Quarter town is a treasure trove of art galleries, independent cafés and restaurants and specialist boutiques. -MEET THE- Jurassic Coast Ambassadors WORDS: Ross Packman IMAGES: Matt Austin

Established in 2002, The Jurassic Coast Trust is the charity which funds and inspires conservation, understanding and community engagement along the 95 miles of World Heritage Coastline.

The Trust co-ordinates talks, walks and family-friendly events to encourage visitors and residents alike to celebrate, understand and enjoy this iconic UNESCO-endorsed location. It relies on volunteers, grants, and donations from individuals and businesses to carry out its work along the coast.

The hard-working Jurassic Coast Trust Ambassadors are local volunteers who give up their time to tell people in their local community about the World Heritage Site and what makes it globally unique. Who better to give visitors the low-down on the best of the Jurassic Coast!

30 Meet Emily Name, age and professional background: I’m Emily Cowper-Coles, a 24 year-old environmental geoscience graduate from Cardiff University.

When did you first discover the wonders of the Jurassic Coast? I’ve visited the Jurassic Coast from birth, and remain convinced that on a dark and blowy Christmas Eve I saw Father Christmas flying over Monmouth Beach at Lyme Regis.

What inspired you to become a Jurassic Coast Ambassador? I wanted to find work on the coast, and what’s not to like about getting involved, with places to go and people to meet? I love seeing people enjoying the area and helping to protect the coast.

Describe your perfect Jurassic Coast weekend. A walk along the Undercliffs National Nature Reserve. Grab a packed lunch, get on the bus and then walk the whole way from Seaton to Lyme Regis, seeing hardly anyone. I’d then finish the day by watching the sunset on the beach.

Where is your favourite Jurassic Coast location? So hard to choose, but I would probably say Golden Cap.

What’s the Jurassic Coast’s best-kept secret? I almost want to keep it for myself, but Down House Farm Café at .

Where’s your favourite place to wine and dine on the Jurassic Coast? I’d catch or buy some local fish and cook them on the beach myself!

Founded by Keian Gillet, a chef with truly inter- national credentials and a passionate boardrider to boot, the Galley Café brings a touch of its owner’s own relaxed surf chic to Lyme Regis.

irst appearing on Broad Street in 2014, the Galley has fast Fbecome a local institution and reputedly serves the best breakfasts in town, with the ‘Full Montgomery’ and its selection of locally sourced bacon, sausages and eggs proving a winner with regulars and visitors alike. New to the menu in 2017, The Galley also offers free-range poached eggs and kippers courtesy of the award-winning Chesil Smokery.

Recently refurbished, the cosy and welcoming interior stands as a monument to Keian’s passion for surf and skate, displaying an extensive selection of vintage surf memorabilia and a substantial percentage of the owner’s own board collection!

Keian and his close-knit team pride themselves on the fact that almost every item on offer in the café, from the best-selling Guinness cake to the new Sticky Toffee Pudding, is made fresh on the premises. In fact, the only things not born and bred in Dorset are the Cornish pasties, which come courtesy of the award-winning Posh Pasty Company and are baked in-house each morning.

In addition to a window display full of enticing treats to take away, the Galley also offers a broad lunchtime menu, whether you fancy a freshly-baked baguette with your favourite choice of fi lling, or (depending on the season) a warming stew or summery salad.

Coffee lovers should pay a visit too, as the Galley boasts a traditional Italian-style coffee machine and sources its beans from Somerset-based Brazier Coffee, who produce artisan blends in their Giesen Roaster . For those looking for something a little stronger than a freshly-ground espresso, a carefully chosen selection of wines, ciders and craft ales from microbreweries in the region is sure to quench your thirst.

Throughout the year The Galley plays host to regular ‘Vittles and Verses’ evenings, curated by Tracey and Simon West of Magic Oxygen Publishing. Featuring performance poetry and delicious food, previous events have featured artists including the 2016 Bard of Exeter, Robert Sean Casey.

Roly’s Fudge ...it’s crumbly!

Based on a 150-year old Devon recipe, Roly’s Fudge has been made for the last 30 years with only the highest quality authentic ingredients.

ll of our cooking is done in front of customers in the shop A so that they can see how it is made. We use the traditional method of mixing and heating the ingredients in a copper pan, before turning it out and working until cool on a marble slab. This results in the freshest, crumbliest, most authentic fudge that it is possible to buy anywhere.

We stick to our founder’s philosophy of using real butter, milk and sugar in our fudge, with the highest possible quality ingredients to add flavour while staying free from artificial flavours, colours and preservatives. For example, we use real dark rum in our Rum ‘n’ Raisin Fudge and crunchy walnuts and 100% pure maple syrup in our Maple & Walnut Fudge.

2017 is our 30th birthday and to celebrate we will be featuring limited edition flavours available only in the summer months. At the top of our list is Gin & Lemon, which is made using locally sourced Conker Gin from Dorset’s own Gin distillery. This unusual flavour has become one of our favourites and, if you are lucky and it has just been made, you will be able to taste it while still warm and fresh from the slab! Of course, we still make our most popular flavour Vanilla Clotted Cream using vanilla extract from local Devon company Little Pod and Cornish clotted cream.

You can find us on the sunny side of the street at the bottom of Broad Street, Lyme Regis. Come in and have a taste and see it being made, don’t forget to ask if you would like to try it Find them at: 62 Broad Street, Lyme Regis DT7 3QF fresh from the slab! 62 63 A taste of the Jurassic Coast While winemaking may seem the exclusive reserve of balmy Mediterranean locales, the Jurassic Coast enjoys a temperate maritime climate equally suited to the creation of delicious traditional vintages.

ommanding a central location in the idyllic Axe Valley, the Caward-winning Lyme Bay Winery was founded by Nigel Howard in 1992 and today is supported by a growing and diverse team of wine lovers, growers and makers. Making the most of bountiful local ingredients, the Lyme Bay Winery is dedicated to producing delicious English Wines, country wines, ciders, meads and liqueurs.

The winery’s dedicated team hand-pick nettles from around the winery hedgerows, grow elderflowers on site and tap local Birch trees for their Birch Wine. For their English Wines, Lyme Bay use grapes from 26,000 vines in affiliated vineyards within a stone’s throw of the winery, making the most of the area’s long, warm growing season.

When it comes to upholding the Jurassic Coast‘s long tradition of cider making, Lyme Bay Winery use only freshly-pressed juice from locally grown traditional cider apple varieties such as Dabinett, Kingston Black and Yarlington Mill. The passion that the Lyme Bay Winery team put into their creations is reflected in the wealth of accolades they have received, including numerous Taste of the West awards and Great Taste Producer accreditation. Many of Lyme Bay Winery’s beverages are inspired by traditional recipes, partnered with up-to-date production techniques to ensure the best of old and new.

For the chance to browse (or even sample!) their full range, Lyme Bay Winery welcome visitors to visit The Winery Shop, situated just fifteen minute’s drive west of Lyme Regis and widely signposted. As well as their own produce, Lyme Bay Winery are also proud to distribute wonderful local products from the Otter Brewery, Vale Brewery, the Somerset Cider Brandy Company and Annings Fruit Ciders.

The Winery Shop is open 9.30am - 5.00pm Monday to Friday throughout the year, with weekend openings beginning from mid-March onwards.
