It was 1993, the first year of major league baseball in Colorado. In front of 67,000 fans at Mile High Stadium, freshly minted Rockies closer Darren Holmes dashed from the bullpen to the mound, unaware that he was heading straight into the teeth of the monster. “I thought I was Lee Smith,” recalls Holmes, then a brash, goateed 27-year-old righthander whom the Rockies regarded so highly that they had taken him with the fifth overall pick in the expansion draft five months earlier. In his Denver debut Holmes gave up three straight singles, a double and a walk before recording his first out. He threw 24 pitches and allowed seven runs in a 19–9 loss. He took the mound again in the following game, and with the chance to close out a 4–2 win, Holmes—suddenly unable to locate his curveball, his signature pitch—walked the first three hitters he faced, allowed three runs to score, blew the save and took the loss. The previous season, in Milwaukee, he had been one of the best relievers in the game. It took two weeks in Colorado for him to be banished to the minors, his confidence in pieces.

While the NBA Development League is merely an afterthought to basketball fans and the NFL draws talent essentially directly from the college ranks, MLB clubs boast a vast array of minor league affiliate teams with player skill levels ranging from teenagers from foreign countries and fresh high school graduates to seasoned veterans. But even aside from the advantages clubs gain from allowing young prospects to season for 3-5 years in low pressure situations before throwing them into the fire of major league competition, the Minor League Baseball (“MiLB”) system allows baseball to expand the sport into various locations untouched by the 27 MLB markets. The 240 MiLB clubs range from Portland, Maine to Lake Elsinore, California and bring professional baseball to media markets as expansive as San Antonio, Texas, as well as towns as small as Greeneville, Tennessee. Unlike the European Premier League system where minor league affiliates are merely extensions of the top-level club, MiLB teams generally act as their own separate entity exclusive from their MLB parent club. Independent minor league teams are not controlled by their parent club. They are free to pursue their own affiliate relationships as governed by the Major League Rules in the same way that a free agent player is free to choose the team of his choosing. The altitude effect present in Denver, CO potentially plays a role in why hitters thrive for the Rockies and pitchers struggle. Player’s statistics are altered by playing in Denver, and these performance indicators’ significance diminishes, especially for Rockies players. Statistics are influential in determining player compensation in professional baseball. The statistics of Rockies players, however, are biased because they play 81 home games at high altitude each season. The results of this paper support the notion that the Rockies capitalize on their unique effect by paying players differently than the rest of the league. To partially nullify this effect in 2002 the Colorado Rockies began humidifying the balls use there. In this paper we show that doing so statistically reduced the number of home runs hit there. Introduction Coors Field, where the Colorado Rockies play, has always been regarded as a home run friendly ballpark. It is at an altitude of approximately 5280 feet. According to the Physics of Baseball [1], a batted ball travels approximately 10% farther at that altitude than at sea level. Figure 2 compares the flight of two batted balls with the same initial speed, angle of elevation, and wind speed. The lower curve represents the path if the ball is hit at sea level and the upper curve shows the path at an altitude of 5280 feet. In the latter case the ball clears the fence but not in the former. Bohn JILA, NIST, and Physics Dept., Univ. of CO, Boulder, CO 80309 (Dated: June 18, 2008) Abstract We investigate whether storing baseballs in a controlled humidity environment significantly af- fects their aerodynamic properties. We measured the change in diameter and weight of baseballs as a function of relative humidity in which the balls are stored. The trajectories of pitched and batted baseballs were modeled to assess the difference between those stored at 30% relative hu- midity versus 50% relative humidity. We find that a drier baseball will curve slightly more than a humidified one for a given pitch velocity and rotation rate. We also find that aerodynamics alone would add 20 to the distance a moister ball is hit. This increased distance is compensated by a 60 reduction in the batted distance due to the change in the coefficient of restitution of the ball. We discuss consequences of these results for baseball played at Coors Field in Denver, where baseballs have been stored in a humidor at 50% relative humidity since 2002. 1 I. INTRODUCTION The game of baseball is strongly influenced by the aerodynamics of its central object, the ball. A typical home run ball hit at sea level will travel 4000 rather than the ∼ 7500 it would travel in vacuum.1 And the same batted ball might be expected to go 4200 in the thin air of Denver, one mile above sea-level. This increase is less than might be expected from aerodynamic considerations alone due to the prevailing northeast winds in Denver.2 Because the ball is expected to travel farther, the idea of introducing a major league team (The Colorado Rockies) to the Denver area was met with opposition in the early 1990's.

Coors Field, the home ballpark for the National League’s Colorado Rockies, is, because of the very high altitude, a hitter-friendly park. In 2002, the Rockies (with permission from Major League Baseball) installed a humidor, that is, a humidity- and temperature-controlled room to store their baseballs. Humidifying baseballs by placing them in a humidor adds moisture to the balls and thus makes them heavier and harder to hit. While installation of the humidor would make the baseball more like what visiting teams hit at lower altitudes, the change might be expected to have the biggest (and not necessarily a favorable) effect on the home team Colorado Rockies. In this note, we compare the number of home runs hit at Coors Field one season before and after the installation of the humidor. Table 1 summarizes the results for the home team Rockies and all visiting teams, not all of which were the same in both 2001 (before the humidor) and 2002 (after the humidor).1 The average number of home runs hit by the Rockies in their 81 home games each season fell dramatically from 1.53 to 1.20 (p = .037 for a 2-sample, one-tailed test).
