PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Parent / Carer / Reader

Welcome to the latest edition of ‘The Regis News’!

This edition continues to showcase the many opportunities and excellence at our school in many different areas. We have a particular focus on the Design Technology faculty which covers the subjects of Textiles, Food, and Product Design and also a larger focus on Sport for you to browse.

We also focus on Year 7 and 8 in this edition following the successful move to horizontal tutor groups at the start of the New Year and I congratulate those students featured for their hard work and excellent attitudes! You will know that we had a drugs awareness day recently, inviting an external ‘expert’ to talk to students, staff and parents about the current challenges facing all our communities. Students were impeccably behaved, listened carefully and many spoke of how the sessions backed up what they were learning in PSHCE lessons in the school. Having spoken to some parents who attended the evening session, I wish to remind all parents that any medication brought in by children should be notified to the medical room. We would prefer students to not bring in tablets such as paracetamol and ibuprofen and we do stock paracetamol that we can give to your children in a controlled way and with your permission. If your child does bring any medication onto site please remind them that it is for their use only and that they must not share this with their friends.

We had a very positive visit this week from our Trust Regional Director who remains impressed with our plans and strategies that aim to achieve ‘best ever’ results this year. She commented on strengths of leadership and teaching and we all remain determined to support all students consistently and continuously to be their best and achieve their best. Two areas that we need parents and carers support on are reading at home and the completion of all homework set. Please actively encourage your child to read from their school reading book for at least 15 minutes each day to compliment the reading they do in school. Please also check your child’s homework log each day on classcharts and also check that they have completed the homework set to their best quality.

This edition reminds all at The Regis School of the massive amounts of after school activities that your child can get involved in. Please actively encourage your child to take up something if they do not already, it really does build new friendships and interests! Please also remind your child that, although we welcome and indeed encourage students to complete additional studies on site up to 4.45pm, they are here to work – this is especially important as we approach final exams where those students need quiet and focused learning spaces.

Finally, I remind parents of two upcoming training days where students are not in school. The first is next Friday 8th February where staff are training with staff from other local schools, and Monday 25th February (immediately after the half term break). Students break up for half term on Friday 15th February with a normal close time of 2.30pm.

Thank you as always for taking the time to read about your school, and for your continued to support in our aim to achieve ‘The Best in Everyone!’

Best wishes

Mr Garlick Principal

Reece Saker “We get to see more of our friends from Year 7 as well as seeing people that we are in classes with. This has helped me talk about anything I was worried about, especially with Year 7 issues.”

Year 7 have some of the highest number of achievement points across the school with over 45000 points, a clear indication of the fantastic work and effort from our Year 7’s over the course of this term. We continue to have high expectations of our Year 7 students, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the support you are giving at home. Our top achievers from the week commencing 21 January are shown on this table. A fantastic achievement! We have asked all Year 7 to aim high and really focus on getting some more achievement points so that they can join the top of the table!

Every Monday, Week B, our Year 7’s attend a whole year group assembly, our theme of this cycle has been acts of kindness and respect. We are encouraging all our students to consider how they treat others and being thoughtful of each other’s feelings.

Celebration of our Year 7 Rugby & Basketball Teams The Year 7 boys had a great start to the Rugby season, with many of them representing the Year 8 team, which gave them great experience for their County Cup fixtures in December. The boys played fixtures against Hove Park and Varndean winning both which put them through to the final 8 in the County. They were then drawn against Dowlands Community College, who came to TRS with a very strong side knocking us out of the County Cup. The season is still young as they have 4 league games left against schools within the local area. What a fantastic achievement to reach the final 8, well done to all in the Year 7 Rugby team.

The Year 7 Basketball team recently competed at a Year 9 Tournament (with students 2 years older than themselves) unfortunately not winning any games, but developing their abilities and coming within only a basket of winning two of the three games. An excellent effort by everyone involved and a promising future ahead! A fantastic display of several of the ‘Regis 10’ showing great Resilience (R6), Determination (R5) and Positivity (R4).

All year 7 students prior to the Christmas break completed a survey for our sponsors and we had some fantastic feedback about their experiences so far, here are just a few of their comments:

“The school does really well including everyone and giving everyone an opportunity to do things and everything is fair.”

“I think my school as a whole does well at getting people together, overcoming challenges and getting students the grades, they want to be successful.”

“The Regis School set homework set to the standard of kids learning, teachers try to include everybody in the school. They have an amazing variety of clubs and fun days out for everybody”

“They have good systems in place to make the school function easily, and they challenge you”

Year 8 are the 2nd largest year group at the Regis School with 265 students currently on role. As such we have a largest tutor team in the school with 13 tutors. Our tutors are here to help, if you have any questions and concerns, please feel free to contact them, you can find all of our teachers’ email addresses on our website or by clicking this link: https://www.theregisschool.co.uk/contact- us/all-staff-contact. Tutors are also there to ensure your child starts the day prepared for their learning. If they feel there are any aspects of uniform or equipment that need some support they will contact you discuss and help resolve any issues.

Year 8 have been awarded many achievement points for great work in and out of lessons since September. These points allow students to work towards their student pledge and they are awarded bronze, silver and gold certificates for achieving key milestones of achievement points, 150 points, 250 points and 300 points. We are pleased to say that we have some students who have already achieved their gold certificate in just over a term.

Alongside this, Year 8 has an attendance figure above the schools expectations and we havea significant number of students who still have 100% attendance, with no days off at all this so far. There are also a huge number of students who have good attendance which still sits above the schools expectations.

To celebrate this, below 3 students who have the highest number of achievement points and 100% attendance.

Recently year 8 have completed their mid-year assessments. This was supported with letters home, timetables for every student and support in preparation through assemblies. These assemblies looked at revision, specifically how to revise, what type of space to have to revise in, how long to revise for and what to use (knowledge organisers). We will now look to review where we are as a year group, what the students want to aim for in the next set of assessments and how to achieve this.

Year 8 Reports All Year 8 students will receive their second report of the year during tutor time. The reports you receive will look as shown in the picture below.

These reports look very different from previous reports, they are less complicated but contain all the information you need to know regarding your child’s progress and effort, as well as attendance. You will be given the percentage that your child received in the mid-year test and how this is compared to others in the year group by using a rank order indication. There will also be an age Related grade, as shown in the example of the report, this is based on a students test results and it indicates the grade a student could gain at the end of year 11 if they continue on their current flight path.

Subject Focus- DT To give an idea what year 8 have been up to in DT we have visited some lessons to find out what students are doing and celebrating their work with them. Here are some classes in Textiles, Product Design and Food Technology.

Students featured in the photographs: Textiles: Angel Mathew, Ellie Poyser, Maddison Williams Product Design: Sophie Brazier, Isabelle King, Emily Parsons,Ellis Illsley, Chester Banton Food Technology: Charlie-Jack Solomon, Amy Buckfield, Luke Hauxwell

Textiles Here students are in the process of initial designs for a soft furnishing. Students are really letting the

creative juices flow as they draft ideas to come up with one final design for Head of Faculty for Technology, Mrs Smith.

Product Design Mr Curthoy’s (STEM Coordinator) has students busy in the production process for their Toy truck to teach practical skills with a focus on accuracy and safety in a workshop . Below you can see students using different tools and techniques to create their designs. Students are working independently to complete their design pieces.

Food Technology Mrs Owens’ class have just finished cooking their own Bombay Potatoes from scratch and then enjoying the fruits of their labour by tucking in to their dish. The smell is captivating and it is really pleasing seeing students complete the whole process from start to finish (including the washing up of course).

Some of these students are planning to enter the ‘Create & Cook’ competition for which entries must be in by March. Students who enter will be tasked with making 2 courses from locally sourced ingredients and will have 1 hour and 30 minutes to prepare their dishes. For those who make it through, the finals will be in June…. Go Regis!

We look forward to letting you know more about Year 8 as they journey through the academic year, Best Wishes, Mr K Gardner (Raising Standards Lead) and Mrs N Wiles (Head of Year)

#EducationwithCharacter

The Year 10/11’s played a basketball fixture against Felpham Community College, the game finished with a dramatic loss 21-20. The game was tight throughout, with no team having more than a 3 point advantage. The boys represented The Regis superbly and with a bit more luck could have easily won.

Alfie Spurle - Year 12 competed in the Sussex Schools Athletics Association Cross Country championships after qualifying at an event earlier in the year.

He was running in the under 18 age category and managed to finish 21st in the county. He showed incredible determination on a windy, wet and hilly course and did both the school and West proud.

Well done Alfie!

The U15 boys won the area Indoor Cricket competition this Monday. They all played extremely well, with our team made up predominantly of Year 9 students. The boys won their games through ex- ceptional bowling and fielding, with some good performances with the bat to back this up. The boys are now through to the County Indoor Finals which will be held at Sussex County Cricket Club held in the near future. The team consisted of: Max Wladon, Frankie Bigwood, Finlay Chadwick, Billy Bicknell, Hadley Long & Bradley Caparo.

Wed 23rd January St Philip Howard - Away The boys played with only 11 and no subs. They put in an excellent first half performance to be 2-1 down 2 minutes into the second half with a great goal scored by Conolly. Unfortunately a good SPH scored a few more goals after we gave away some penalties (one was a cracking save by Shezza in the yellow jersey) the final score was -7 1 which did not reflect the quality of football in the first half. First game managed by Owen and was thoroughly motivational on the side-lines and made some changes during the game to tighten up the defence. Thanks to the supporters who travelled over to a cold exciting game.

Wed 30th January St Pauls - Home We hosted St Pauls on Wednesday who are top of the table and unbeaten. TRS fielding yet another first 11 saw some quick goals scored in the first half before we gathered a better formation in the back restricting them to 3-0 in the first half. The Year 9 we had in goal made some good saves to keep us in the game but lapses in concentration allowed goals to be scored. Changes again made by the manager Owen with his helpful and motivating comments to support the team. Toby Buck scoring a cracking goal in the second half. Again we had 12 fabulous cheerleaders freezing and giving motivation to the lads.

This week we host Oriel at home. Highest Standards + Highest Focus = Outstanding Outcomes

SPORTSHALL ATHLETICS COMPETITION

The Sportshall Athletics Competition was

held at Bishop Luffa, with 5 schools competing in four categories: Year 7 girls

Year 8 girls Year 7 boys Year 8 boys

Everyone represented The Regis School impeccably with standout performances coming from the Year 7 4x2 relay team who won their race, Maccoy Lewis who won the Year 7 boys vertical jump and Grace Eminson finishing nd2 in the Year 7 girls 6 lap race.

We look forward to an exciting Summer of athletics with these, and many other students, where we can compete again.

YOUTH SPORTS LEADERS TRAINING MORNING

th Saturday 19 January 2019

We had a record turn out for our 10th year of the Youth Sports Leader programme. We have had numbers steadily grow over this time because of the leaders going to our feeder Primary Schools and leaving such good impressions. Those primary pupils in turn want to become one when they reach TRS. We had 77 applicants turn up for the Saturday morning training recently.

They all worked well together to complete a number of team challenges and then in small groups created a small game. It had to meet a set criteria laid out by Mr O’Connor and top of the list was it being fun and active.

We had 13 groups who delivered their bespoke activities, thrown in the deep end of presenting to their peers and they all took it in their stride.

The next step is to complete the monitoring period, which runs from now to half term. They have reports to be signed each PE lesson which indicate how well they are meeting the Regis 10.

In addition, they must be supporting the PE department with attendance to an extra- curricular club.

Finally and most importantly, they must show us what good role models they can be by getting no behaviour points.

They are acutely aware that a Youth Sports Leader must be a role model in the entire school community not just in PE lessons.

We are excited to have such a strong cohort of pupils taking these positive steps to becoming a Youth Sports Leader.

Watch this space. Mrs Barlow and Mr O’Connor

MUSICALITY

On Friday 25th January, Music students from Years 9 to 13 performed in the annual Music Show ‘Musicality’. The theme this year was ‘Switch’.

Students performed covers of songs which were played in different styles to the original. The evening was organised by the sixth form BTEC Extended Diploma music team: Jade Brighten, Emma Warburton, Anna Wisdom and Faith Harding. They were supported by James Hurren, Luke Cooper and Katie-Louise McDougall.

The evening was a great success and enjoyed by all. A huge congratulations to all performers for an amazing performance. The Sixth Form Music students are now looking forward to The Big Sing and our annual performance at St Wilfrids church later in the year.

RIGHTS RESPECTING SCHOOLS AMBASSADORS We went to Ford Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) on Wednesday 23rd January 2019 The safety precautions they take were incredible, everyone has to hold handrails on the stairs wherever they go, no food or drink may be consumed anywhere on site, and no photographs are to be taken.

We first saw a video explaining how the MRF works, and the fact that it works for 24 hours a day and processes paper, plastics, metals and glass.

One of the activities we took part in was to sort out some pre - prepared articles into containers which looked like rubbish, but by having more knowledge we discovered was in fact either recyclable, reusable, or reduceable with only a tiny amount going to landfill.

So now working with the Green Team at school we are really keen to reduce the amount of landfill we produce and increase the amount we recycle. We think this is going to be a very exciting time for our school and changing the way we look at our rubbish.

We have really had our eyes opened to think differently about how we can recycle at home and at school and would like to say a massive thank you to the team at the MRF for their time. CHANGE IS IN THE AIR AT THE REGIS SCHOOL School Wins National Sustainability Competition Run by Virgin

The Regis School is celebrating after being chosen as one of only five schools nationally to receive the Virgin Atlantic Change is in the Air Award.

The award, which is run by WE Charity,

recognises schools who display a Virgin Atlantic Change is in the Air Award commitment to sustainability. The school’s Rights Respecting School Student Ambassadors, who applied on behalf of The Regis School, submitted an application overflowing with ideas on how to improve sustainability across the school. As part of their application, the students pledged to reduce the number of rubbish crates being sent to landfill and to significantly increase recycling rates.

The school now has £2,000 to spend on recycling initiatives and awareness raising.

Article 29 Education must develop every child’s personality, talents and abilities to the full 01/02/2019 REGIS NEWS VOLUME 2 ISSUE 10 PAGE 25

Their application stated: The Green Team are a group of students from The Regis School who have made it their mission to reduce waste and increase recycling at their own school and beyond. The team are made of students from our School Council, the A Team and our Rights Respecting Ambassadors. They are keen to uphold Article 24, ‘the right to a clean environment’ and have set themselves the challenge of creating a junk band to spread this message loud and proud. They have visited Ford Recycling Plant to find out what can be recycled locally, are making instruments from recyclable materials and are booked in to perform at assemblies in school to encourage their fellow students to double the amount they recycle.

To ensure their message goes further, they are going to play at the local Felpham and Bognor School Councils Day and hope to enter the Bognor Carnival!

So look out for their green t-shirts, their green message and a whole lot of noise as they encourage us to think twice and recycle, reduce or reuse!

Caroline Saunders, Assistant Principal with responsibility for Education with Character at The Regis School, said: “We are thrilled to have won this award. The student ambassadors worked incredibly hard on their application and are very worthy winners. This award, however, is only the beginning for us and kick starts a new sustainability focus at the school. As part of our commitment to deliver an Education with Character, we constantly seek to impress on students how they have a responsibility to protect the environment they live in. Our students take this responsibility very seriously and have an excellent understanding of the steps they can all take to reduce their impact on the environment.”

Laura Reynolds, Senior Programmes Manager at the We Charity, said: #EducationwithCharacter

“In late 2018, WE launched the Change is in the Air Award for the third time, enabling education groups and individuals in the UK to submit an application about a sustainability project they are looking to launch. Thanks to the generous support and funding from Virgin Atlantic, WE were able to offer five schools up to £2000 for their projects. WE received 53 applications in total from across the UK mainly covering prevalent sustainability issues such as air pollution, food waste, recycling, reducing single use plastic use, increasing local wildlife, and creating green spaces at school and within the community. In mid-January four Virgin Atlantic staff members and one WE staff member came together to read through all of the submitted applications and take on the tough job of narrowing them down to just five! The winning five applications were chosen based on local and global community impact, creativity and uniqueness, and longevity.”

“I’m so pleased to say that The Regis School has won one of the Change is in the Air Award grants for 2019! The judges from Virgin Atlantic absolutely loved the application and how much it stood out from the others for creativity and the amount of detail and research that had gone into it. I’m also so glad that all the hard work that the group put into the application paid off and they are able to make this project truly come to life! Huge congratulations again.”
