Classic Stony 2019 At our 11th annual summer event, again part of 'Stony Live', a record was broken. A massive £6,225.00 was raised, the largest amount by any of our events to date, all of which has been donated to our local Hospice at Willen. Well done to all concerned especially our event sponsors, marshals, and of course you the residents of Stony. Without your co-operation the event could not take place, so again a big thank you.

The town was once more filled to capacity with friendly vehicle owners and spectators. There was great live music in the Market Square, supplied free by our superb local musicians as their contribution to the Hospice. A fly past by a Battle of Britain Memorial

Flight 'clipped wing' Spitfire, so close to the 'D Day' anniversary seemed very poignant.

Please visit our website gallery at www.classicstony.co.uk to see the brilliant varied turnout of all types of vehicles that joined us on the day.

There seems to be a little confusion, so I would like to confirm that 'Vintage Stony' will again be taking place on New Years Day 2020. If you would like to be involved, that would be greatly appreciated. Please register your interest at [email protected] in whatever capacity, and for what time you are able to spare. For further information visit our website at www.vintagestony.co.uk which will be updated as the event organisation progresses.

Thank you again. Ray Cobley, On behalf of the Event Team

Stony Stratford Riverside Fair on the Millfield - 8th June 2019

Attractions at the Riverside Fair this year included trampolines, swing boats, circus skills, the Wolverton Town Band, roundabouts, children’s entertainer and our new activity – Soccer Tots which was extremely popular, with children running around all afternoon. Indeed all activities were fully in use throughout the Fair. Our new field layout meant that Circus Skills was much more central and very busy, with juggling, balancing, unicycles, and plate spinning – children largely showing their accompanying adult how to do it. The Wolverton Town Band were on good form and their charming music carried to all corners of the Fair. Our own acoustic band added some folk music too. We hosted fewer stalls than usual this year, with some cancelling because of the weather forecast, which was understandable. We very much missed the Hobby Horse sponsored toddle and are going to do our best to ensure that this takes place next year. However we were really lucky – we had a fair afternoon with a slight breeze, no rain, offering a good chance for everyone to be outdoors. The breeze meant that for safety reasons we could not use the inflatable attraction. Another effect of a slightly cool and slightly damp morning was that as well as fewer stalls, we had fewer people bringing picnics. But the catering this year was varied and excellent. We offered pizza, curries, coffees, teas and other hot drinks, ice cream and artisan ice cream, and the Lions van, as well as cakes and snacks. Families enjoyed looking round the stalls, having a bite to eat, and then children could have a go on any activity they chose completely free.

New members of the RPG have spread the work load and made the fair more sustainable. The Riverside Parks Group craft stall had children making super aliens while they waited for the face-painting. There were bug hunts in the wildflower meadow and stalls such as hand-made hair bands which were lovely and sold well. Altogether there was lots to do and enjoy, and we welcomed 1000 – 1200 people as the afternoon went on. Constant litter collection ensured that no litter was apparent at any time, and our usual sparkly clean portaloos were there for those who needed them. We are always pleased to welcome stalls from our local primary schools to the Fair.

We are more than grateful for our kind sponsors, Milton Keynes Community Foundation, Stony Stratford Town Council, and the Ancell Trust, whose generosity brings this invaluable community event to life. In addition our Quiz Night in March, run by RPG members, brought in substantial funding for the Riverside Fair. Also we are indebted to The Parks Trust who unfailingly offer support, knowledge, equipment and expertise.

We have plans for further stalls and attractions for the 2020 Riverside Fair, to fulfil our aims of encouraging healthy outdoor activity and providing things to do on the Millfield as a wonderful play space for local families. 5 www.stonystratford.gov.ukPhotos courtesy of Derek Gibbons

Bulb Appeal for Stony Cemeteries

A group of local people are working together with the Fantastic theming for ’Space Chase’ Summer Reading council to improve Challenge the Calverton Road and London Road Cemeteries. Two years ago we had a very successful bulb appeal which we would like to do again. This year we would like to plant miniature daffodil bulbs and dwarf narcissi around the grounds. If you would like to donate a bag of bulbs for the cemeteries we would be very grateful.

Odells have very kindly offered to be a drop off point. You can mark your bag with an L for London Road Cemetery or a C for Calverton Road Cemetery, and drop them off at Odells.

If you would like to help plant the bulbs please email [email protected] for further details. Thank you.
