AFS JApAn provides a wide range of programming, including summer camp programs, school-based exchanges, and shorter summer programs for high school students. With support from the Japan Earthquake Relief Fund, AFS Japan provided scholarships for students from the Tohoku region to participate in school-based exchanges, primarily to study in the United States. http://www.afs.or.jp// (JapAnese) Archi+Aid (アーキエイド) was an organization and network of over 300 architects and university professors teaching architecture across Japan that operated for five years to assist in the reconstruction efforts in Tohoku. Archi+Aid conducted many projects that preserved memories of lost towns post-3.11, and to give local citizens a voice in the reconstruction of their devAstAted towns and help them visualize their future towns. With the goAls of sAfety, sustAinAbility, And preserving locAl culture, Archi+Aid used funds from the JapAn EArthquAke Relief Fund to orgAnize workshops thAt brought together architects, students of Architecture, urbAn planners, And disaster prevention professionAls together with local businesses, cooperatives, And residents to shAre their visions for the future of their cities. News Release AGC Asahi Glass to Exhibit for Second Time at Milan Design Week, One of the World’s Largest Design Festivals April 12 (Tue) – 17 (Sun), 2016 Venue: Superstudio Più, Milan, Italy Tokyo, January 27, 2016 – AGC Asahi Glass (AGC), a world-leading manufacturer of glass, chemicals and high-tech materials, announced today that AGC will participate in Milan Design Week 2016, one of the world’s largest design festivals held in Italy in April this year. Marking its second appearance at Milan Design Week this year, AGC will use Dragontrail™ and other types of thin, chemically strengthened glass for its unique installation to showcase a “light, flexible and expressive” glass world that will dramatically change the conventional image of glass. Using Amorphous, indicating the molecular structure of glass, as the ◆Creation Partners◆ key concept, AGC’s glass installation will be created in partnership with NOSIGNER, a design firm that has a multi-disciplinary approach to design strategy, including graphic, product and space design. Space Design: NOSIGNER CEO: Eisuke Tachikawa AGC’s Dragontrail™ and other thin, chemically strengthened glass have been used mainly for the cover glass of smartphones, tablet PCs Lighting Design: and other electric devices. The chemical strengthening treatment Izumi Okayasu applied during the production process makes the glass more resistant to scratching and breakage than ordinary glass. ISBN-10: 0-9876055-0-X ISBN-13: 978-0-9876055-0-4 Artpolis Legacies Proliferation of Public Architecture Programs for Urban Regeneration in Turn of the Century Japan Ari Seligmann Monash University Inspired by the Berlin International Building Exhibition (IBA) 1987, Kumamoto Prefecture’s Artpolis program (1988- present) initiated a new paradigm for public architecture in Japan. Artpolis introduced a novel commissioner system, which reformed procurement processes, and provided poignant alternatives to master planning approaches. The multi-faceted program was established with a tripartite organizational structure divided between the Governor with the Artpolis Administrative Office, Advisor and Commissioner, all collaborating through three key enterprises – projects, awards and public relations. Entrepreneurial administrators around Japan quickly recognized the potentials of Artpolis, which was subsequently emulated by a range of prefectures and municipalities who adopted variations of the model. Examining the legacies of Artpolis and its impacts on architectural culture in Japan, this paper compares the strategies and outcomes of four progeny public architecture programs.

The 45th Central Glass Responsible Care Report International Architectural Design Competition Social & Environmental Report Theme: Housing for Better Urban Environments Today, we need to refurbish our existing knowledge on housing complexes in order to reconstruct ideal housing complexes suitable 2011 for modern cities, while at the same time protecting the good traditions of our heritage. The theme of this competition–“Housing for Better Urban Environments”–brings diversified ways of urban living under review, so that we can better cope with today’s problems, and raises the question “what makes urban life new and rich?” Demographic projections show that in the near future the majority of the world’s population will be living in cities, as evident in different forms of urban housing now appearing from region to region. Moreover, the lives of many people are no longer centered around the family these days, resulting in the appearance new kinds of residence status. People have become more environmentally conscious as we must now pay attention not only to our immediate living environment but also our surroundings. The question of how housing complexes should be in responding to such an environment thus remains as relevant as ever. We must consider how our urban societies should be in the years to come, how to respond to the requirements of an environment where resources must not be wasted, while at the same time enjoying the convenience of a highly developed urban environment, and also contribute to an urban landscape that is an asset to us all.
