10P Dayslayers Onboarding Guide By Patrick Donabedian Welcome to the 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu HQ morning program (aka 10th Planet ‘Dayslayers’). Our mission is to mold you into a dangerous grappler—both off your back and on your feet. Below is all the information you’ll need to get started on the epic journey… JOIN THE TEAM #10PDaySlayers FB Messenger group: https://m.me/join/AbYWHEg_iTh-mixx This group’s primary purpose is for instructors--myself and AJ--to post class announcements. So please message (or emoji) sparingly as to not spam everyone. HOWEVER, you are encouraged to direct message me, AJ, or any other teammates anytime. 10th Planet HQ Private FB Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/377655388921916/ Click “join group” to request access. 1 GEAR AND APPAREL Required Class Apparel: ● Sandals- no bare feet off the mat ● Athletic shorts or board shorts- no pockets preferred ● Compression underwear and/or jockstrap underneath shorts ● Rash guard or tight-fitting gym shirt- no sleeveless tees/tank tops; must change if back-to-back classes Optional Class Apparel/Gear: ● Mouthguard ● Ear guards (my recommendation: Matman Halo on Amazon) ● Protective Cup (FYI: most practitioner’s opt to not wear) ● Wet bag for soiled rash guard/shorts (ex: plastic grocery bags) ● Spats (tights) ● Ankle sleeves ● Tight knee sleeve (if sore or sensitive knees) Shop: ● 10th Planet Apparel: http://www.10thplanetjj.com/shop/ Get free shipping by writing note at checkout: “Deliver to HQ” ● Phalanx Apparel: https://phalanxfc.com INJURY PREVENTION Partner Responsibilities (Illegal Techniques): ● No jumping moves or falling weight during stand-up or wrestling exchanges (i.e. jumping closed guard/guillotine, scissor takedown/leglock) ● No grabbing or twisting individual fingers when defending chokes (must be at least 3 fingers) ● No “cranking” on chokes or joint locks- slow steady pressure is safer and optimizes technical prowess; if opponent is stubborn, make “awkward eye-contact” or employ “catch and release” like a vegan fisherman :) Self-Responsibilities: ● Do not free-roll within your first 2 weeks to 2 months of training--use self-awarenss or ask me ● Tell partner experience level ● Wear a mouthguard ● Just drill when nursing an injury ● Notify instructor of any prior injury or physical limitation related to the assigned class technique ● “Catch and Release” when you suspect a sparring partner does not know to tap ● Tap-out to submission holds by distinctly tapping your opponent’s body, the floor, or clearly stating “Tap” ● Note for emphasis: Tap early and often--it’s the only way to learn and live to fight another round/day 2 RULES & ETIQUETTE Dos: ● Sign-in at the front desk before class ● Ensure fingernails and toenails are trimmed before class (may use spare nail clippers in locker room) ● Practice good hygiene (mouth, body, and fresh clothing) ● Reset sparring location if you get too close to another group--even if you were there first Don’ts: ● No chewing gum or eating on the mat ● No glass bottles permitted in gym ● No elevation drills on padded pillars ● No bare feet off of Mat- always wear sandals so as to not tread dirt onto the mat ● No speaking when coach is giving instruction or gives clear direction to drill repetitively ● No stealing or “borrowing” property of other students without express permission If you’re late to class: ● Don’t sweat it, we know it’s early and traffic is a pain. Once you arrive, stay near the edge of the mat to do a mini-warmup/stretch. When ready, find a partner in a 3-group or I’ll select a partner for you ● Tip: Aim to show up 10-15 minutes early before every class. This is valuable “found time” for extra drilling which will give you an edge over sparring partners. You’ll need it! Tips for Success: ● Ask or message teammates and instructors questions when you get stuck or frustrated ● Help guide along and teach less experienced teammates during and/or after rolling rounds ● Drill techniques from class instruction for 5 minutes after class or rolling rounds ● Never miss a day (sort of)--on days you can’t make class, drill basic solo warm-ups at home ● Write down a minimum number of classes per week you’ll attend (be realistic). Mark the specific days in your calendar for extra accountability 1-ON-1 PRIVATE COACHING A systems-based approach to become untappable, unpassable, and, ultimately, unbeatable. A few of the things you’ll discover: 3 ● The 6 world championship level attack systems -- then select the one that would be perfect at your stage of development ● Step-by-step escape routes against the most dangerous submissions: leg locks, triangles, guillotines, and armbars ● Brain training for improved memory, self-discipline, and independent problem solving ● The exact micro-skills and drills I use to increase coordination, leg dexterity and endurance Contact [email protected] or direct message on Facebook Messenger to schedule your call SCHEDULE AND PARKING Parking: Parking on Grand (in front of gym) is 50 cents/hour starting at 8 am. Most students who plan to stay past 8 am opt to prepay the meter via credit card when arriving before 6:30am. Class concludes at 7:30 am followed by optional sparring rounds. F.A.Q. What is Ayahuasca LLC? This is the registered name for 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu that will show on your credit card statement each month. 4 Is there a Lost and Found? Yes, but only instructors have access. Please ask your instructor to check for the item you’ve misplaced. The gym is not responsible for any stolen or lost property. When do belt promotions occur? Typically, belt promotions occur every 6 months--in August and February-- after Gracie Worlds/Nationals. With a fair bit of consistency, each belt may take 1-2, even sometimes 3 years to obtain. Why didn’t I get promoted? Every student progresses at their own pace based on a myriad of factors. Also, “belt math” can appear very muddled. For example, a white belt may able to tap out a blue belt, but the professor may still wait to promote the white belt. Feel free to ask/message me if you believe your progress is going unrecognized. 5 .
