Sydney University Football Club 2016 Annual Report | 7 President’s Report

Members and friends, I’m proud and honoured to be delivering my first annual report as President following David Mortimer, who was at the helm for 16 successful and rewarding years.

I know I speak on behalf of all SUFC players, volunteers, supporters and sponsors in acknowledging the huge contribution David, and his wife Barbara, made to the club in ever-changing times on and off the field.

The on-field success during that period is evidenced by the number of Colts and Grade premierships we won, the number of Club Championships we won, and the number of players we have provided for

the Wallabies, Waratahs, franchises, SUFC President Angus Stuart and the NRC.

Off the field, David led the club into a new era, finding At the heart of our approach has been the adoption new ways to fund the club operations both through of a character-based program. Thanks to Helmut Gebels for being our assistant referee all year and for the pizzas after round 18 which has become a fantastic tradition.

While all the players are to be congratulated for their efforts we should mention a few who achieved personal milestones. Tom Wilson was our top point scorer for the season and surpassed 500 points for the club during our Grand Final victory. Tom’s goal kicking this year was outstanding and it was rare that he missed from anywhere on the pitch; it gives a team a huge confidence boost to have a good player in that position. Max Hughes was consistently one of the best players on the pitch week in and week out, which earned him the best forward award.

Finally, we’d like to thank all the 4th grade players. Thank you for being a great group of blokes and for fostering a positive team culture that made training somewhere we all wanted to be. I felt a bit like a 1st year Colt personally, walking into a new challenge, a new environment, working with new players, coaches, learning the playing philosophy of the competition, not knowing what games were the big ones. Looking back on the year, I now feel a genuine part of the SUFC legacy and family and I hope all our new and 2016 returning Colts can feel that same way.

That is always the primary aim, to create long lasting connections between; the players, the Club, the three Colts teams, the coaches and players. Connections that are forged through extremely hard work and navigating numerous on and off-field challenges.

There were numerous mountains for the players to climb, coming out of the school system into a SUFC preseason is a seismic shift out of ones’ comfort Colts Back Rower Davis Jensen zone.
