1 Annual School Report 2017-2018 Our School Introduction Maryknoll Convent School (MCS) Secondary Section is an EMI Anglo-Chinese Roman Catholic day school for girls. It is financially assisted by the Government of the Hong Kong SAR as a “Grant-in-Aid” School. The language of instruction at MCS is English except in classes where Chinese or Putonghua constitutes the subject material. History In 1925, the Maryknoll Sisters began teaching 12 students in the convent parlour at 103 . They taught classes in basic subjects. In the decades that followed, the number of students grew, as did the number of teaching staff. After six years on , Maryknoll Convent School (MCS) moved to in 1937. World War II interrupted their teaching, but the Sisters resumed their work in 1945. In 1960, the Secondary Section relocated to 5 Ho Tung Road while the Primary Section remained on Boundary Street. From an initial class of 12 students and a few Sisters, the school (both primary and secondary sections) has grown to its current full capacity of 2000 students with a faculty of over 100.

Since 2005, the Maryknoll Convent School Foundation Ltd., comprising Maryknoll Sisters and former teachers and students, has assumed the sponsorship of the school.

School Facilities The secondary section of MCS has been operating in a single building of three storeys. The Jockey Club Wing with additional classrooms and other facilities was erected in 1995. There are 31 classrooms as well as laboratories for biology, chemistry, physics, and junior science. In addition to a lecture room, the student canteen, assembly hall, conference room, staff resource rooms, staffroom, prefects' room, Student Association room and prayer room, there are special rooms assigned to visual arts, music, cookery, sewing and computer studies. In 2002, a Multi-Media Learning Centre was added to facilitate computer-assisted learning of all subjects. There are also outdoor and covered playgrounds and a swimming pool and basketball court shared with the primary school. The campus features lawns, trees, bushes and flowerbeds. The Rogers Annexe, constructed under the School Improvement Programme, was opened in September 2004. This has facilitated various aspects of learning with the provision of more classrooms as well as rooms for specific functions, namely the Multi-Purpose Area, Student Activity Centre, extended Library, and the Computer Assisted Learning, Geography, Careers, Character Building Committee, Guidance Activity and Editorial Board Rooms, etc. In 2016-2017, all classrooms and special rooms were covered with wi-fi and in 2017-2018, all classrooms were equipped with digital media players to facilitate e-Learning. A 21st Century Classroom and a 21st Century Supportive Education Room were set up. The rooms were furnished with furniture and equipment which facilitate learning 21st Century skills.

2 Annual School Report 2017-2018 School Management School Organization: We follow a school-based management framework with the sponsoring body exercising the highest authority. 3 Annual School Report 2017-2018 Achievements and Reflection on Selected School Goals

Priority Task 1: To encourage and empower our students and staff to pursue excellence and realize their potential to the full.

Ultimate Targets: I. To develop and enhance the capacity of staff and students. (Pursue Excellence, Realize Full Potential & Be Forward-Looking)

II. To develop and enhance students’ 21st Century Learning Skills: critical thinking, creative thinking, communication and collaborating skills. (Pursue Excellence; Realize Full Potential; Be Forward-Looking)

III. To develop and enhance students’ 21st Century Literacy Skills: information literacy, media literacy and technology literacy (Pursue Excellence; Realize Full Potential & Be Forward- Looking).

Achievements:  Students participated in a wide range of activities to pursue their interests and broaden their horizons with outstanding results. Beyond the traditional activities such as debates, speech and music festivals and sports competitions, our students have been exposed to more STEM competitions and other longer-term projects that require creativity, teamwork and entrepreneurial skills. Details to be found under “Student Achievement” under Section 6.

 Enhancement and enrichment classes of English (F.1 & 2), Chinese (F.1, 2 & 4) and Maths (F.2, &3) held were able to help those with different academic potentials to stretch further and scale new heights. Feedback from students and teachers concerned found the arrangements of split and pull-out classes conducive to the learning and teaching process and optimizing student outcome.

 School-Based programmes, namely the Extended Learning Programme, Project-Based Learning and STEM Ed Programme, helped the F.1 students to enhance 21st Century skills and knowledge and increase their interest in STEM-related activities to build a solid foundation for success in senior secondary years.

st o The Extended Learning Programme was revamped to help develop the 21 Century skills in students. The F.1 programme was changed from subject-based extended learning activities to skill-based modules, namely Library and Information Literacy, Communication & Interpersonal Skills and Self-management Skills.

o The Project-Based Learning Programme teachers continued to help students research on Personal, Social & Humanities Education topics of their own interests. This served as a good foundation for students in their completion of Independent Enquiry Study Reports for Liberal

4 Annual School Report 2017-2018 Studies in the Senior Forms. L.S. teachers were able to find majority of the IES reports of satisfactory standards.

 The systematic approach to promoting STEM education has paid off with increased student interest and achievements, supported by additional resources from alumni donations.

o The STEM Education Programme was introduced in F.1, sharing lesson time with Project-Based Learning Programme. The 11-week programme during class time was a good taster activity for the majority of students involved. The programme included 1) microbiology (a student-centred inquiry comparing the cleanliness of chosen places), 2) flight investigation (study of aerodynamics, where students designed and constructed their own planes), 3) building blocks for stimulating creativity and innovation (building windmills, compressed air turbines, solar vehicles, etc.)

o Students’ interest in STEM-related activities was demonstrated by the increase in participation rate. The rate in STEM-related extra-curricular activities in 2017-2018 was higher than the previous school years. In terms of the number of events, it was nearly double of that of 2015-2016; in terms of the number of participants, it was 50 percent more than that of 2016-2017. With the STEM fund provided by the government, various panels (Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Junior Science) were able to use the extra resources effectively to facilitate students to participate in activities outside school.

o Participants of STEM-related extra-curricular activities were mainly from the senior forms. These students, who studied the science electives in F.4, were able to apply what they were learning during class time to complete projects in a variety of STEM-related competitions.

 A 21st Century classroom was launched, based on the pedagogy-technology-space concept. The room is equipped with iPads, Apple TVs, full length glass walls, projector and electronic screen, sound system, WIFI internet access and reconfigurable furniture. Teachers from different subject panels were able to engage in e-Learning pedagogies and make good use of e-Learning tools and facilities. The high usage rate of the 21st Century classrooms and other e-Learning tools, e.g. iPads and e-Learning platforms e.g. Socrative etc. showed teachers’ readiness to create technology-infused classrooms with multiple pedagogies to foster student engagement and networked and personalized learning. Majority of students (across the board) were able to demonstrate Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Communication and Creativity in their work and projects.

 Through learning about the Sixteen Habits of Mind (HOM), students acquired targeted habits to help them to excel and stretch their potentials. Incorporating the targeted HOM and 21st Century skills in their year plans, all panels and committees contributed to the fulfillment of the school goal concerned. Selecting HOM relevant to the year group to be incorporated into Class Goals was able to achieve desirable results. E.g. “Think Interdependently” and “Finding Humour” (HOM) are selected to be class goals for F.6. The F.6 students were able to demonstrate how they supported one another in group work and also how they faced their joint challenge of the public exams. Positive feedback in the evaluation of the Class Goals achieved across the forms. 5 Annual School Report 2017-2018  Teachers sought out professional development opportunities provided by the EDB and other organisations to stretch their potentials and enhance their various skills. One such focus was eLearning and teachers were able to share their knowledge and skills across the panels during staff meetings and also within panels and committees during their meetings. One staff development day was dedicated to promoting teacher well-being, while the other was spent visiting Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Chinese University so teachers can learn how 21st Century skills are being cultivated in tertiary education.

Reflection  The systematic approach to presenting the Sixteen Habits of Mind and their corresponding 21st Century skills has worked well, and can continue to be promoted as a useful tool to help students acquire the skills to excel and fulfil their potentials. More flexibility can be allowed for the panels and committees to pick relevant Habits to align with the new school goals.

 The School-based Programmes will be further developed in the junior curriculum so that students can acquire necessary 21st Century skills and build a solid foundation for senior secondary years learning. The STEM curriculum in F.1 will be expanded to become a 1-year programme to give time for students to acquire STEM related knowledge as well as have hands-on experiences in engaging in STEM projects. STEM activities will also be introduced in F.2 to take the place of Tech-Ed contact hours. Teachers involved will make time to learn related skills and help to develop a STEM curriculum for F.2 in due course.

 Due to the demands of the senior curriculum, many new initiatives including STEM-related ones could be introduced as extra-curricular programmes. These exposures could help enhance the interests of students and help them apply their knowledge in research projects.

 21st Century skills development can be further enhanced in the curriculum, both senior and junior, through curricular and extra-curricular programmes.

 Pull-out enrichment and enhancement classes for Chinese, English and Maths should continue as they yield good results in helping students with very diverse academic needs.

 By joining the profession development courses organised by the EDB and other institutions, teachers are able to keep abreast of the latest development in teaching and learning. Their capacity in facilitating students’ learning has been enhanced. The Staff Development Programme for promoting teachers’ well-being was well-received. More wellness programmes would be organised in the future to foster an organizational culture of health and well-being.  Teachers have got insights on how the 21st Century skills could be cultivated through the visits to The HK University of Science and Technology and The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

6 Annual School Report 2017-2018 Priority Task 2: To instill in our students the importance of trust and integrity, an appreciation for cooperative teamwork and respect for others.

Ultimate Targets I. To develop and enhance the spirit of service by promoting the values identified: “trust”, “integrity”, “cooperative teamwork” and “respect for others” (Serve Home, Country, World)

II. To develop and enhance students’ 21st Century Life Skills (Flexibility, Initiative, Social Skills, Productivity, Leadership) (Be Forward-Looking)

Achievements:  All subject panels and committees have helped to promote the targeted values and enhance students’ spirit of service through activities in and outside school. Teachers gave positive feedback towards students’ attitude and performance. Students who excel in this area were recognized by teachers who nominated them for service awards. The Character Building Committee and Prefects’ Board’s records and evaluation showed that our students were generally well-behaved and were able to live up to our high expectations. The majority of the students were able to demonstrate their “integrity” or “respect for others” etc.

 The 21st Century Life Skills were promoted in all student activities. The Student Association and the Prefects Board played an important part in promoting and helping our students live out the skills concerned.

 The trip to Maoming, Mainland China, enabled our students to serve in the orphanages and also primary schools. Students found the trip meaningful and their performance was complimented by the organizer. Their spirit of service was evident and “cooperative teamwork” and “respect for others” were values lived out through their actions. Students also learnt to treasure what they have.

 The visit to the Maryknoll Motherhouse in New York was well planned and it was not only a great opportunity for the students to broaden their global horizons while getting in touch with our school heritage, but also a way for students to serve the Sisters, who founded our school, and to learn from them about their visionary projects to serve their home, their country and the world.

Reflection:  Students’ creativity and spirit of service can be further stretched so that service becomes a “way of life” for Maryknollers. Class-based service projects can be facilitated in the coming years.

 The values identified should continue to be emphasized and promoted in different school activities regardless of the changing of the school’s major concerns. They are very much part of the mission of the school.

7 Annual School Report 2017-2018 Our Learning and Teaching

Learning & Teaching Strategies We have clear-cut objectives and policies for fashioning a curriculum in line with the school's vision and mission, and with the intellectual, spiritual, psychological, emotional and physical needs of our students. We provide our students with different learning experiences as an integral part of education for whole person development. Our curriculum is balanced, comprehensive and multi-faceted and caters for a broad range of abilities and needs. We have flexible timetables to accommodate our diverse, cross-curricular and extended learning activities, particularly those designed to promote civic and moral education. Student-centred Learning and eLearning activities are systematically introduced in class. Extended Learning Programme lessons are in place for students to enhance their learning in different subject areas outside the classrooms. They help to enhance the acquisition of 21st Century learning, literacy and life skills. STEM Education is introduced in F.1 and students were exposed to in and out of school STEM activities and competitions.

Key Tasks (Reading to learn & Project-based Learning): A reading session is built into our Monday to Thursday regular timetable. The school also runs an on-line reading programme for Chinese books and English reading materials. In each junior form classroom, a reading corner has been set up. Each student also keeps a reading profile listing the books she has read. Our P.T.A. Reading Club organizes regular sharing sessions featuring famous authors and speakers in order to promote students’ interest in reading. The school library team introduced the mobile library and initiated book floating activities to encourage the reading habit. Students' critical thinking skills and creativity are improved through classroom discussion, project work and intranet learning and teaching. Form 1 students have two lessons of Project-based Learning each week, through which they can acquire the skills required for effective independent learning by working on group projects. They learn to carry out research on a topic of their own interest and write up a research report at the end of the school year. As they move up to higher forms, they expand their knowledge and skills by working on projects in different subject areas.

Teaching & Learning in Information Technology: We have 3 computer rooms, including a multi-media learning centre (MMLC), to serve our students’ needs. In addition, our students can go online in the school library to gather information. Every one of our classrooms is equipped with a computer, an apple TV, a visualizer, a screen and an LCD projector to facilitate eLearning where deemed appropriate. All classrooms and most special rooms have wi-fi access and eLearning activities are employed when appropriate. Computer notebooks and tablets are available to facilitate eLearning. An intranet and tools like eCampus and eClassroom make it possible for teaching-learning and 8 Annual School Report 2017-2018 communication to take place outside school hours and outside the school setting. Each teacher is issued with a notebook computer. Preparations have been made to facilitate e-learning in all classrooms.

Medium of Instruction Policy: All classes, apart from Chinese Language, Chinese History and Putonghua, are conducted in English. Putonghua is a compulsory subject from Forms 1 to 3. Our English Club runs the annual English Week and English camp. Through Chinese and English reading schemes, prose reading and verse speaking, drama and musicals, we seek to maintain a high level of proficiency in biliteracy and trilingualism well beyond the requirements of public exams.

Curriculum Tailoring and Adaptation for Learning and Assessment: We administer a midyear and a final examination every school year, supplemented by regular quizzes. The Common Test Week, introduced in 2017-18, allows students to study at their own pace and develop self-directed learning. It also gives room for teachers to have more diverse teaching strategies to cater for students’ needs in the first term. Our method of assessment takes into consideration both a student's written assignments and her performance in class.

The school provides additional resources to provide pull-out programmes for Non-Chinese students. These will prepare them for the alternative Chinese Language public exams recognized by the universities. Additional resources are devoted to help Non-Chinese students to be able to catch up with their Chinese counterparts in terms of their Chinese Language standards. Other than preparing for the alternative Chinese exams, more emphasis has been put in enhancing the Non-Chinese students’ language skills beyond the examination curriculum. Extra-curricular activities are also run to promote understanding and create harmony among students from different cultures. These also help the Non-Chinese students practise the Chinese language in a meaningful way.

Students with Special Educational Needs can apply to have special arrangements made in internal and external examinations and assessment. These depend on the recommendations provided by experts in the area. Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) are drafted and implemented under the guidance of the in-house Educational Psychologist. Regular case conferences are held to ensure specific needs of students’ concerned are made.

14 Annual School Report 2017-2018 Support for Student Development

Healthy Lifestyle: At MCS we set great store by our students' physical and mental health.

Physical Wellbeing We offer a wide range of intracurricular and extracurricular sporting activities. All classes, F.1 to F.6, have Physical Education classes which offers a comprehensive curriculum. Besides having sports clubs and teams for selected athletes, the school organizes annual sporting events open to all students e.g. inter-house activities e.g. the Annual Swimming Gala, Annual Athletics Meet and inter-class running competitions and ball games. Besides exploring in class the importance of eating healthily to stay fit, the school conducts events focusing on healthy eating such as 'Fruit Day', ‘Green Friday’ etc. to put into practice our belief in a healthy lifestyle. To ensure that our students follow a balanced diet and sound eating habits, the lunch dishes and the snacks that our school canteen provides are decided on and vetted by qualified nutritionists.

Mental and Psychological Wellbeing The school put great emphasis on promoting mental health. For Staff Development Programmes, the school has invited experts including psychiatrists, clinical psychologists and educational psychologists to conduct seminars and workshops to equip teachers with professional knowledge in tackling issues related to mental health. The school has been promoting positive psychology for more than 10 years. The in-house clinical psychologist has conducted courses for teachers and students to introduce the background and merits of positive psychology. Teachers and student ambassadors have been trained to promote positive psychology. The student ambassadors, called the Smileys, organize programmes to help the junior-form students to get to know and enhance different character strengths. They also help to boost the morale of F.6 students who are stressed due to the exam pressure. The school adopts a comprehensive whole-school approach involving religious and moral education, the homeroom period, guidance provided by a full-time social worker, the Careers Committee, the Extra-curricular Activities Committee and the Pastoral Care Core Group, under which the Character Building Committee, the Counselling Committee, the Prefect Board, the Homeroom Teachers’ Committee work together to promote the mental and psychological wellbeing of the students.

15 Annual School Report 2017-2018 Catering for learner diversity Funding from the EDB and the MCS Educational Trust helps to pay for extra services like the running of Learning Support Groups and the provision of school-based educational, psychological and clinical psychological services. Individualised Education Plans (IEPs) are drafted and implemented for students with Special Educational Needs. Case conferences are facilitated by the SEN & Gifted Education Committee regularly between the in-house Educational Psychologists, the School Social Worker, homeroom and subject teachers to discuss students’ learning needs. The Educational Psychologists also conduct surveys to help gauge the different learning styles and identify learning issues of students. Based on the findings, homeroom and subject teachers can offer appropriate assistance to individual students. Enhancement and enrichment classes are run, where appropriate, to help students of different levels of academic ability to excel, stretch their potential and improve. Split classes and pull-out tutorial sessions are run to help students who can benefit from having more individual attention from teachers or instructors.

18 Annual School Report 2017-2018 Students’ Reading Habits This wide range of activities helped to cultivate a reading culture among the majority of students. The more avid readers were able to act as role models for the others.

Students’ reading habits were promoted through:

1. the daily reading session (20 minutes) from Monday to Thursday; 2. a recommended reading list drawn up by the Chinese language and English language teachers; 3. Chinese and English book review assignments; 4. the addition of new Chinese and English fiction and non-fiction titles to the school library every year;

5. film appreciation: in-class screenings of feature films (e.g. Bloody Sunday, Match Point, The Kite Runner, Girl with a Pearl Earring, Charlotte’s Web, etc.) and adaptations of plays by Shakespeare and other classics (e.g. Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the Odyssey etc.);

6. English quiz shows based on Mary Glasgow magazines; 7. the ‘Hylda Christie Book Award’ for the best readers in English in Forms 1 – 6; 8. the book forums organized by the English Club; 9. junior- and senior-form writing competitions; 10. the book review displays mounted by the Chinese Club; 11. book exhibitions; 12. new initiatives of the Library Team such as book floating and 13. the Parent-Teacher Association Reading Club.

46 Annual School Report 2017-2018 Feedback on Future Planning

This was the third & last year of our 3-year development cycle. The school incorporated into the school plan Four Strategic Foci, namely, “Serve Home, Country and World”; “Pursue Excellence”; “Realize Full Potential” and “Be Forward Looking”, identified by our School Sponsoring Body as crucial to the development of the school. With the new school development cycle, the school will continue to embrace these Four Strategic Foci as one of the school goals.

Our school will maintain a balance in the opportunities we offer to ensure students can have a holistic outlook. STEM education will continue to be developed, and will be balanced by innovation in other areas, whether we call it STEAM, or STREAM education. eLearning activities will be part of the daily routine for classes whenever applicable. The three school-based programmes i.e. Extended Learning Programme, Project-Based Learning & STEM Education, will be fine-tuned and further developed in the junior forms to encourage and empower our students in their acquisition and application of 21st Century skills. Students in the senior form will be encouraged and empowered to achieve the same goals via continued refinement in the teaching and learning of the Senior Secondary Curriculum and wider exposure to extra-curricular activities.

As the school is moving towards the celebration of the centenary in seven years’ time, we will revisit the our school motto and our school’s vision and mission to devise forward-looking plans in the context of the 21st Century and the education landscape in Hong Kong. We will continue to be committed to providing quality education to our students.
