Chelmorton

Parish Statement (draft)

Chelmorton parish is centred around the settlement of Chelmorton, a small linear settlement, which grew alongside a surface flowing stream – Illy Willy. The village also includes a linear settlement at right angles along The Ditch – following an ancient man made water route. Chelmorton is located 4 miles south west of Taddington and 7 miles west of and is one of the highest villages within the National Park. The whole of the village is located within the Conservation Area and is characterised by the use of rubble limestone which unifies the properties in the village and the strip-field system which still remains. The church of St John the Baptist, dating back to the 13th century, is one of the few listed buildings in the village. A recent community initiative saw volunteers clearing the land around the Illy Willy water spring, to the north of the settlement, of dead and dangerous trees and replant with 100 new trees. This has improved the environment, attracting birds and other wildlife. Chelmorton has an active community centred around the War Memorial Institute, church and public house. The village has a thriving annual festival in July and hosts a MacMillan coffee morning and local groups and caters for visiting events at the Institute. Chelmorton is located within the limestone plateau pastures of the White Peak area as described within the Landscape Characteristic Assessment (LSAP 2009). The landscape is characterised by planned small- medium fields bounded by limestone walls. There is limited tree cover in the village, except to the north of the church and public house, which affords long views across the upland pastoral landscape. Chelmorton Parish Statement (draft)
