PLEASING PEOPLE IS OUR BUSINESS Telephone: 51204 GALTEE RVS./ ST. PECAUNS lBB5 - 19B5 by David Moloney A hundred years is a very special occasion in any walk of life and so this year marks, for us, a century of affiliation to the Gaelic Athletic Association. although Gaelic games were played in the parish way before the G.A.A. was formed. In the year of its affiliation in 1885. the club adopted the now familiar red and white colours instead of the old green jersey with a red sash . Our first appearance in the County championship was in 1889. when the club affiliated a Senior Football team in the South Championship, but we had to wait until 1912 for our first Divisional title when led by the great Jack Kennedy we beat Mullinahone 2-2 to 1-3 in a controversial game. Mullinahone had been nomtnated by the South Board to contest the County Championship and duly won, Bansha went on to beat Mul1inahone in the South final and Bansha objected to the Munster Council having beaten the County champions, but lost the appeal. John Cullinane of Bansha was a very prominent official in the early days of the G.A.A. He was a member of the first Central Council and was part of the famous American invasion of 1888. In that year also he had the honour of refereeing the first All-Ireland Senior Football Championship between Limerick and Louth, played at Dublin. So began the fine tradition of top flight referees from the parish. This tradition has been kept prominent in recent times by John Moloney, who has proved without doubt to be one of the best referees in modern times and has received every honour in the game. Todays Senior final referee, Paddy Lonergan, is just beginning his Inter-County career and has the ability to go to the very top. Hurling came into prominence in the parish in the early twenties, when a team from Kilmoyler, captained by Ned Crowley, won the South Seniortitle of 1923, and were unlucky in the County final to be beaten bya North selection. The lone surviving member of that great team is Bill Tierney of Cappa. The golden era of the club began in 1949 and lasted 'till 1954, winning two COUnlY Senior Football t.tles in 1949 and 1950 and six consecutive West titles between those years. This was the era of Larry Maher, Larry Quinnand Jim O'Connor and it was the success of this great team that fashioned the club into a football stronghold. We had to wait until the mid seventies for a return to prowess, but between 1976 and 1981 the club played in six consecutive County finals winning three in '76, '80 and '81 . The secrel of our present success lies in the attention paid to our Juveniles from the mid-sixties onwards when many good under age teams were kept together under the guidance of John Moloney. Today the Juvenile Committee are as active as ever and hold parish leagues on a regular basis. So as we enter our second Century the immediate challenge facing the club is the replacing of the present Community Centre with new dressing rooms and a function room. Twenty thousand pounds has already been collected by a very active Development Committee under the guidance of Seamus Grogan, work is expected to begin on the new building by the end of September.

They were underdogs for thai 1934 final as their opponents. , had lorded it In the West since the formation of the West Board. Michael Burke remembers "We were afraid of our lives of the opposilion- They were big men, they had Jack, Larry and " Fox" and others, but we were young and fit and ran them off thel( feet. Playing on that victorious leam was Mickey Murphy, who went on 10 establish a club record for West Senior Hurling successes. He played on the winning 1936 team that defeated Golden Fontenoys 6·2 to 4-' In the final at Clonoulty on August 30th. Cashel completed a double by beating Clonoulty in the 1937 final. Cashel won another double In 1939 and 1940. In the former year they defeated Golden and retained the title in 1940 when they defeated Clonoulty at Dundrum to become the first holders of the new Divisional CuP. the O'Dwyer Cup. They had 10 wait until 1945 for their next success when they defeated Eire Og at Cashe!. One of the stars of that team was and his brother Pat was the captain. Cashel and Mickey Murphywon their seventh title In 1948. on September 5th, at Golden. their opponents were Kickhams. Mickey Murphy was the only player from the 1934 team. Cashel had to wait until 1965 for their next success, beating Eire Og at Golden. This was the first of five titles for Peter O'Sullivan. He remembers it as the most satisfying. "It was a fantastic final. Therewasa great atmosphere among the members of the team. Eire Og had two goals early on. r remember. to my regret that Gleeson of "Concrete" fame, buried me in the net. but I learned". Three other players won their first of five titles that day. John Darmody. Angus Ryan. Patsy O·Connor. the other four were in 1971 . 1975, 1976. 1980. The Cashel team for to-days final contains an array of talent. 14 CAPPAWHITE G.A.A. CLUB cappawhite G A A. Club was founded m 1886. The early years of activity were confined to football. In 1910, Cappa were defeated In the Mid. S.F. fmal by Borrisolelgh, who went on to County hOllOurs. The 'irst taste of success was achieved ,n 1913 when Cappa won the South JunIOr Hurling Championship, defeating old nvals Hollyford With the founding of the West Board In 1930. at the Golden Vale Hall, cappawhite finished its search for a Division. Geof"ge Furlong represented the club at that historic meeting A comb, nallOn from cappa and Donohill won the first ever West Tipp Junior Hurling title in 1930. Pat Furlong was a member of the Junior County team that figured in the Triple Crown success of 1930. The '40s were golden for the club, with Cappa capturing the County JUnior titles m 1942 and '48 This was the era of the late great Willie Barry who won an All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship medal with TIpp In 1937 In 1957, cappa united With Glengar l Solohead to form St Nicholas Senior Hurling team and they had a notable West final victory over Kickhams who were gOing for their eight West crown In succession. The club·s Juniors captured the Divisional title to make 1957 a golden one. Another gloriOUS era of caman WleldlllQ by the cappa men and youth was heralded by the advent of Fr James Power as curate In Cappawhite. ln 1961, united with Annacarty under the name of SI. Vincents, Ihe Cappa men brough the West Senior title back to the combo. The Junior title was also captured the same year Under Fr. Powers expert tUitIOn the Cappa Juveniles had a great spell In 1961 and 1962 wmnlng West and County titles In Hurling and a West Football crown also. Three years later these youth matured to bring a Cou nty Minor Hurling victory to the paflsh. In 1965the County U/ 2 1 Championship was taken.

The seventies were very successful for cappawt1ll6. e g , 1977 two Counties were recorded U/ 21 Hurling in combo With Eire Og and JUnior Football After th ree epIc games With Galtee Rovers, Cappa won the West Senior Footba ll final by 0-7 to 0-5. That same year Cappa captured three other West's; Minor and U/ 21 Hurling and Junior Hurling In 1983, cappa broke the barren spell of the Senior Hurlers, when the West Senior Hurfl ng Championship was brought home, a feat they repeated in 1984 And now 1985 IS here and the lads from "the lovely vi llage" are but one step from their third success at Senior level, Can Cappa do It? The question Wilt be answered today

16 THE LATE BILL HAYES

One man who would have been amonglhe a!tendance at IOOay's West Final, if the grim reaper hadn't made the unwelcome call less than a fortnight ago, IS the late and loved Bill Hayes. For sheer length of service, his fifty one years as Board Registrar, marked him as a uniQue personality in the Division's fifty live year history.

Bill was both an Institution and a character In the best sense of both terms He seemed ageless. He was There almost from the founding of the Board in 1930 and year after year BIll's presence was virtually taken for granted- a rare absence would be more noted than his presence. He was "Mr West Board" Itself who had seen officers come and go, had indeed fought a number of ballots to retain his own post. and seemed as mdeSlructable and timeless as the mountains which overlook Bansha's Park today But Bill was also a character, a rare Individual whom you simply couldn't typecaSt as "Mr Average" For him The SOCial Side of the GAA was as important as the games themselves He wasn't one 10 miSs the chat and banter of a gathering where he could Joke and taunt In hiS own roguish way. Even harsh words from Bill didn't seem harsh because behmd the sounds you knew from the glint m his eye thai there was a fun-loving Inlentln his brusque utterances In the sadness of BIH's passing it was amazing how little was known aboul the man's past I myself gOI some glimpse of II last December as we waited together outside the meeting hall in Dundrum for a finance meetmg to end before the start of a Board meeting In the midst of a few typically brash statements about what the hell they were dOing at the meeting and why couldn't they speed it up, a few teasing questions set him reminiscing about hls early years. He spoke about beulg born in Tipperary town and reared In Hollyford; about his emigration to America m Ihe late twenties and the hornble depreSSion that he met; about how he scrounged to survive in "Uncle Sam's" land; about the long boat Journey home with the Tipperary team In 1931 and the vanous escapades where he tried to shelter stowaways and how he himself was then mistaken for one; and fmally hiS relief at setting foot on home SOil again. What he didn't tell was that when he got off the boat at Queenstown (Cobh) his happmess to be home was such that he went (Pope -like) on hiS knees and kissed the ground Then began Bllt's lengthy aSSOCiation with the West Board whlch lasted to hiS death. He never played much, but he did II seems at one stage Ime-out With Arravale Rovers In both hurling and football games. He also refereed. In other areas he was prominent as In the LD.F. and later the F.CA. But always the West Board remained his abiding love, the centre of hiS life. Bill was I suppose In the most affectionate sense a Simple man. He wasn't one for sophisticated or colourful language or long-winded eulogies I could Just imagine him seeing this being wrmen and he'd surely urge to "cut the crap and keep It short" Yes, indeed, all we need now is a fine day, a good attendance, both teams properly registered and somewhere in his "Misty Abode" Bill, With a drink and a villamous smile Will admire the work, Rest peacefully, Bill, your splnt remains with us J.J, KENNEDY.

17 50 YEARS AGO ... comp;,ed bY J , J , Kennedy Half a century ago, the year being 1935, Knockavilla and DonaskeighJolned !olorm the K.ckham club and met Donohilt in the Senior Hurling West Final of thai year The only other teams In the championship were Cashel K.C., the defending champions. who were ousted by Klckhams In the first round, and Arravale RV5 who were put oul by the Donohill men The ',nal was played al DonaskelQh on August 25th. The Tipperary Star headed its report "SPLENDID GAME AT OONASKEAGH" and the follOWing are some extracts. KICK HAMS 7-4 DONOHILl 4- 1 Before a fme hosting of Gales from the surrounding districts the curtain rang down on the West TIPP Senior Hurhng Championship at Donaskeagh on Sunday last. It was won by K,ckhams, representing the Jomt parishes of Knockavilla and Donaskeagh. Their opponents \Nere their clubmates of last year, the sturdy, rugged men of OonohiU, but the enforcement of the parish rule threw each parish on Its own resources. The game was one of fierce tackling and close marking a very pleasing feature of the play was tile almost complete absence of frayed tempers, so infectiOUS of late. "The honour of the IInle Village" was the watchword and the game of our fathers the propelling momentum. John Hennessy. Emly had charge of the whistle and creditably acquitted himself A DING-DONG GAME. .. .by "FULL TI ME". The score suggests a one-Sided game Twas the reverse. Right through the hour from the first to the last whistle It was a ding-dong game WIth hard gOing all the time Many of the winners scores were obtained more or less from faulty goalkeeping which IS not uncommon nowadays Kickhams Victory over Cashel In the first round put the verdict In thelf favour But the display put up by the Donohlll selection, new to Senior Hurling, was tip-top and more or less unexpected. Klckhams had one change from the team which defeated Cashal; Tom Duggan coming In In place of McKenna and he capably filled hiS former position between the posts. J . J .
