Sporting West Final & a Celebration at the ROYAL afterwards FOOO OR INK AND ATMOSPHERE CALL TO THE ROYAL PLEASING PEOPLE IS OUR BUSINESS Telephone: 51204 GALTEE RVS./ ST. PECAUNS lBB5 - 19B5 by David Moloney A hundred years is a very special occasion in any walk of life and so this year marks, for us, a century of affiliation to the Gaelic Athletic Association. although Gaelic games were played in the parish way before the G.A.A. was formed. In the year of its affiliation in 1885. the club adopted the now familiar red and white colours instead of the old green jersey with a red sash . Our first appearance in the County championship was in 1889. when the club affiliated a Senior Football team in the South Championship, but we had to wait until 1912 for our first Divisional title when led by the great Jack Kennedy we beat Mullinahone 2-2 to 1-3 in a controversial game. Mullinahone had been nomtnated by the South Board to contest the County Championship and duly won, Bansha went on to beat Mul1inahone in the South final and Bansha objected to the Munster Council having beaten the County champions, but lost the appeal. John Cullinane of Bansha was a very prominent official in the early days of the G.A.A. He was a member of the first Central Council and was part of the famous American invasion of 1888. In that year also he had the honour of refereeing the first All-Ireland Senior Football Championship between Limerick and Louth, played at Dublin. So began the fine tradition of top flight referees from the parish. This tradition has been kept prominent in recent times by John Moloney, who has proved without doubt to be one of the best referees in modern times and has received every honour in the game. Todays Senior final referee, Paddy Lonergan, is just beginning his Inter-County career and has the ability to go to the very top. Hurling came into prominence in the parish in the early twenties, when a team from Kilmoyler, captained by Ned Crowley, won the South Seniortitle of 1923, and were unlucky in the County final to be beaten bya North selection. The lone surviving member of that great team is Bill Tierney of Cappa. The golden era of the club began in 1949 and lasted 'till 1954, winning two COUnlY Senior Football t.tles in 1949 and 1950 and six consecutive West titles between those years. This was the era of Larry Maher, Larry Quinnand Jim O'Connor and it was the success of this great team that fashioned the club into a football stronghold. We had to wait until the mid seventies for a return to prowess, but between 1976 and 1981 the club played in six consecutive County finals winning three in '76, '80 and '81 . The secrel of our present success lies in the attention paid to our Juveniles from the mid-sixties onwards when many good under age teams were kept together under the guidance of John Moloney. Today the Juvenile Committee are as active as ever and hold parish leagues on a regular basis. So as we enter our second Century the immediate challenge facing the club is the replacing of the present Community Centre with new dressing rooms and a function room. Twenty thousand pounds has already been collected by a very active Development Committee under the guidance of Seamus Grogan, work is expected to begin on the new building by the end of September. 5 Ml. In that way we can keep the resolution of the photos high and the size of both sections will be less than one megabyte. Part one is the magazine section and part two is the weekend roundup. The three Cup Finals in Croke Park provided some fine hurling but the crowd was just under 4,000 so it is probably back to the drawing board for those finals. Each needs to be played as a curtain raiser to a game from the Liam McCarthy Championship to create the right atmosphere. The Munster Final had patches of fine hurling and some fine individual displays but lacked the intensity of former classics. Both teams Tipperary and Waterford are continu - ing to make progress. Tipperary still look the best challenger to the champions but Wa - terford battled with heart and could yet make a final four berth. Best wishes ‘til next week from Hurling World. FEATURE Mickey ‘The Rattler’Byrne Issue 11 July 13th 2009 p 3 Rattle ‘em Mickey! Mickey ‘The Rattler’ Byrne from Thurles Sarsfields, held down the right fullback position for Tipperary for 12 championship seasons between 1949 and 1960 and was a substitute on the All-Ireland winning team of 1945.

14 THE ANNUAL CONVENTION OF CUMANN LÚTHCHLEAS GAEL, COISTE CHONTAE THIOBRAID ÁRANN 2015 Tuarascáil an Rúnaí 2015 (Tipperary Co Secretary’s Annual Report) eidh cuimhne ar 2015 toisc gur shroicheamar trí chinn de cluichí ceannais na hÉireann. Cé nach raibh bua againn in aon ceann acu, is féidir linn a bheith deimhneach agus bródúil go rabhamar páirteach insan méid sin de laetha móra CLG. BD’fhág Éamon Ó’Sé slán tar éis páirt a ghlacadh sna cluichí ceannais sa sraith agus sa chraobh, ach ar a laghad, bhí sé de shólás aige Craobh na Mumhan a bhuachaint, an t-aon trófaí i rith a réime bhainistíochta. Leanann an dul chun chinn sa pheil agus chuir Na Tráchtálaí marc airde nua síos leis an éacht a rinne siad i Mí na Samhna ag tabhairt an chéad Craobh Peile Chúige ar ais don chontae. It is a privilege to present my ninth report to Tipperary County Convention. 2015 was so full of promise being so near and yet so far away and could have easily turned out a great year. After a bad start losing the Waterford Crystal and League first round our Senior Hurlers had four very impressive League wins on the trot to qualify for the League play-offs. A most disappointing one point loss to Waterford in the League Semi was put aside as we overcame our bogey team Limerick in the Munster Championship with a sixteen point victory in their own Gaelic Grounds. This was followed up with a Munster Final win over Waterford and momentum was building towards an All Ireland Final.

  • Tony Brennan (1916-1965)
(1916-1965) Tony(Clonoulty-Rossmore Brennan & Tipperary) By Seamus J. King There are a number of poems and ballads written about the glorious period of Tipperary hurling, 1949-1951, and Tony Brennan features prominently in them. He is ‘a full back brave and strong’ in Champions of ’49. His defence of the Tipperary goalmouth and Tony Reddin is highlighted in Tipperary’s Hurling Men 1950: ‘Before you on the ramparts stands Brennan cool and still/Oh! Anthony, You’re grand, you’re brave – in peril we trust your skill.’ And Tipperary Fifty-One calls for ‘A cheer for Tony Brennan our peerless sound full back/Who kept the forwards all subdued and stemmed each fierce attack.’ Jimmy Finn, one of three survivors of these years – the other two being By Seamus King Mickey ‘The Rattler’ Byrne and Johnny Everard – recalls Tony as a father figure to John Doyle and himself in those years. He was protective of them, supportive of their efforts and a great leader who marshalled the defence. He was very protective of Tony Reddin and a great mentor of his in the early years. Jimmy uses the word ‘genius’ to describe his skill and his reading of the game. He was a great man to use a flick or a tip of the ball to get it out of the danger zone. Jimmy also recalls that Tony played during those great years under the severe handicap of an injured back and in many cases it was only his grit and determination enabled him to finish particularly tough games.
