The Oratory Church SMART THINKING! Everyone Welcome! SMART LEARNING! THE VATICAN HAS RELEASED THE DATE FOR THE CANONISATION OF JOHN HENRY NEWMAN: Sunday 13th October 2019! On Monday 1st July, Pope Francis formally approved Blessed John Henry Newman’s canonisation. He will be canonised at a ceremony led by Pope Fran- cis in St Peter’s Square, Rome on Sunday 13th Octo- ber. Blessed John Henry Newman, one of our school patrons and our founder was one of the most prominent converts to Catholicism from Anglicanism of the 19th century. He was renowned as a brilliant thinker, educationalist and missionary to the people of Birmingham. He was made a cardinal by Pope Leo XIII. He died in Birmingham in 1890, aged 89, after found- ing the Birmingham Oratory. When he died, more than 15,000 people lined the Hagley Road and streets of Birmingham for his funeral. Newman is the first English person who has lived since the 17th century to be recognised as a saint by the Catholic Church. Fr Ignatius Harrison, our Provost of the Birmingham Oratory which was founded by Newman in 1849, said: “Newman's lifelong success in bringing others to Christ shows us that the apostolate of Christian friendship achieves much more byattracting people to the Lord than by aggressive po- lemic. Newman's long and incremental spiritual pilgrimage shows us that God leads us to Himself step by step, in ways that He customises to our individual needs, and in His own good time.” More information about Cardinal Newman can be found at www.newmancanonisation.com. To celebrate this momentous occasion the school is organising events throughout the next academic year with other schools and Friends of the Oratory School (FOTOS). On the additional sheet attached to this newsletter please make your views know on events or activities you would like to occur. Ideas sheet to be returned to school by Friday 19th July 2019. 1 2 SAVE OSLER STREET PARK FROM BEING BUILT ON! Attached to this newsletter you will find a questionnaire about how often you use Osler Street Park. The park is extremely important and a well-used green space for the local community, especially the families and children of the Oratory. For our voice to be heard in relation to the public consultation on the Edgbaston Reservoir Master Plan it is vital that you make your feel- ings known. Please, if you haven’t already done so, take time to complete this questionnaire; the results of which will handed in to Birmingham City Council on Tuesday 9th July at the council meeting. th Please complete and return to school by Monday 8 July. If you have already completed a questionnaire there is no need to do so again. Parents and carers of the school are also planning to take a group of people and children with signs and banners to protest outside the council chambers to ensure the local community’s voice is heard. I know that many of our children feel very strongly about saving Osler Street Park. The meeting at the Council House in Birmingham is at 2pm on Tuesday 9th July. If you wish your child to attend this protest, alongside yourself, parents and carers may come and collect their children at 1pm. Happy Healthy Holidays Please let Paramjit Sall, Mrs Dickinson or Suzan Yaman in the main office know if you are interested in registering your child / children for a Family Programme running four days a week, over 4 weeks, for four hours a day. Daily fun, creative and physical activities and lunch will be provided for all participants . Children must be aged between 5 and 12yrs and entitled to free school meals. More activities which include: A BIKE, SCOOTER AND ROLLER SKATE ZONE, HULA ZONE, JUMP ROPE UK DOUBLE DUTCH ZONE AND LOCAL ARTISTS! Please note it will be a CASH ONLY BAR No CREDIT OR DEBIT cards will be accepted. 3 4 THE VATICAN HAS RELEASED THE DATE FOR THE CANONISATION OF BLESSED JOHN HENRY NEWMAN: Sunday 13th October 2019! “Heart Speaks Unto Heart” Throughout the next academic year September 2019 - July 2020 we will be holding a number of events to celebrate Blessed John Henry Newman becoming a Saint! One idea that we have had is to combine the postponed St Philip’s Fayre (due to new perimeter fencing being installed) with celebrations for the canonisation on Friday 11th October. Current initiatives under way: 1) Family Learning Room renamed and reorganisation of space: Saint John Henry Newman Room to be blessed on 9th October (Feast Day). One wall dedicated to his life story and legacy. (Mini Museum) 2) School Chapel - for class, group, pupil, staff and family prayer in addition to class, staff and governor Masses. Children to work with local artist on murals and stained glass window effect to adorn the in- side of the chapel. Chapel dedicated to our three patrons: Our Lady of the Oratory, St Philip Neri and Blessed John Henry Newman 3) Canonisation Area on Website (Oratory children to create the content relating to local, national and international celebrations and the impact of Blessed John Henry Newman’s legacy on communities throughout the world; past and present) 4) A CD of music and poetry written and created by our children inspired by the hymns of Blessed John Henry Newman. CD to be on sale for Christmas 2019 We would be really pleased to hear your ideas on special events or activities we could hold throughout the year including a whole week of celebrations from Monday 7th October to Friday 11th October.     The Oratory Catholic Church of St Aloysius, Oxford Parish Priest’s Report 2011 2011 has been another busy and grace-filled year for our parish, with many events to report. In addition to the statistics attached, we have also seen two ordinations: both of the same person – Fr Nicholas - first to the diaconate and then to the priesthood, and the clothing of a novice: Br Oliver. In February, Fr Daniel was elected Provost, and Fr Robert has taken a well-earned sabbatical after over 20 years as Superior. He went first to the Oratory in Genoa and then (after the American visa finally arrived) to the Philadelphia Oratory. Fr Richard has returned to us after his time as Provost of the Birmingham Oratory, meaning that we now have nine members of the Oratorian community here. Funerals have taken place in our church in 2011 of Mary Abel, Alexandra Konopelska, Martin Moran, Mary Burnell, Paul Carroll, Basil Burwood-Taylor, Mary Selwood, Andy Sivewright, Patrick O’Kane, Vera Ryhajlo and Caja Bayley. Since the beginning of 2012 we have also had the funerals of Professor Sir Michael Dummett, Valerie McNichol, Baby Marco Pezzini and David Whitaker. May they rest in peace. Obituaries for David Whitaker and Sir Michael Dummett have been printed in the national newspapers, so it will suffice to say that we shall miss the twice-yearly confusion of the Emeritus Wykeham Professor of Logic whenever the clocks went back or forward. I would like to single out two of those who died during 2011 who were particularly long-standing and faithful parishioners: Mary Burnell was the inspiration of the St Aloysius’ Drama group since the 1950s.

    Catholic officials seek permission to exhume Cardinal Newman’s body LONDON – Catholic officials have applied for permission to exhume the body of a 19th-century cardinal whose cause for sainthood is expected to soon progress to beatification. They want to transfer the remains of Cardinal John Henry Newman from a grave in a small cemetery in the suburbs of Birmingham, England, to a marble sarcophagus in a church in the city where they can be venerated by pilgrims. A July 14 statement said that the Archdiocese of Birmingham was now in direct contact with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Sir Suma Chakrabarti, to obtain the necessary permission to exhume Cardinal Newman’s body. “One of the centuries-old procedures surrounding the creating of new saints by the Catholic Church concerns their earthly remains,” said Father Paul Chavasse, provost of the Birmingham Oratory and postulator of Cardinal Newman’s cause. “These have to be identified, preserved and, if necessary, placed in a new setting that befits the individual’s new status in the church,” he said in the statement issued by the Archdiocese of Birmingham. He said the Vatican had advised the archdiocese that this would be the normal course of action. “We hope that Cardinal Newman’s new resting place in the Oratory church in Birmingham will enable more people to come and pay their respects to him, and perhaps light a candle there,” he said. Father Chavasse added that he felt certain that many people would “surely wish to honor this great and holy man.” He said the government decision on the exhumation was expected in the “near future.” Cardinal Newman’s cause took a step forward in April when Vatican medical consultants ruled that an inexplicable healing in August 2001 was a result of his intercession.

We began the year with celebration: for Fr Robert‟s silver jubilee of priesthood, both with a splendid Solemn Mass, which he celebrated, and then a reception at St Benet‟s Hall. During dinner on the day itself (5th January) it started to snow, and the Fathers enjoyed throwing snowballs at each other, and at those attending the meeting in St Giles‟ Church Hall opposite us! Snow became something of a feature of 2010.

The making of a saint is a multi-stage process: Stage 1 - local interest – All processes start from the bottom, by a grassroots movement of many people who are convinced that someone lived a very holy life. For the process to start at least 5 years must have passed since the death of the candidate, to allow greater balance and objectivity in evaluating the case. However, in some few cases, this requirement has been waived as in the cases of Mother Teresa of Calcutta (died 1997) and Pope John Paul II (died 2005) whose causes started earlier than 5 years by popular demand. Stage 2 – information gathering - The Congregation for the Causes of Saints (in the Holy See) instructs the bishop of the diocese in which the person died to begin collecting the evidence for their claim of holiness. Witnesses are called before the tribunal and all documents regarding the candidate must be gathered. At the end of the stage, the candidate might be declared to be a ‘Servant of God’. Stage 3 – study of the life and writings – A full scrutiny is carried out of the life and writings of the candidate.

    Pope beatifies Cardinal Newman, calls him a model BIRMINGHAM, England –In the central liturgical moment of his four-day trip to Great Britain, Pope Benedict XVI beatified Cardinal John Henry Newman and said his vision of religion’s vital role in society should serve as a model today. Celebrating Mass in Birmingham Sept. 19 for more than 50,000 people, the pope read aloud the decree proclaiming Cardinal Newman “blessed,” a major step on the way toward official recognition of sainthood. A giant portrait of Blessed Newman hung behind the altar, and smaller likenesses were carried to the Mass by many of the faithful who filled Cofton Park in a suburb of the city. Pope Benedict and the main concelebrants of the Mass processed to the altar while the choir and crowd sang “Praise to the Holiest in the Height,” a hymn with lyrics written by Cardinal Newman. The lyrics to the offertory song, “Firmly I Believe and Truly,” also were written by the cardinal. Blessed Newman, a 19th-century theologian and a prolific writer on spiritual topics, left the Anglican Church and embraced Catholicism at the age of 44. The pope announced that his feast day would be Oct. 9, the day of his entry into the Catholic Church, but he did not mention his conversion or his relationship with the Anglicanism. But welcoming Pope Benedict, Archbishop Bernard Longley of Birmingham offered a prayer of thanks for the Anglicans who nurtured Cardinal Newman’s faith and for Blessed Domenico Barberi, a Passionist priest who welcomed him into the Catholic Church in 1845.
