DP PROGRAMMER

Summary Incumbents perform entry level programming functions under the close supervision of a Systems Programmer, System Analyst, or programmer of a higher classification. Programming functions include tasks such as program planning, block programming, coding program instructions, and compiling and testing as well as new and/or modified programs. Incumbents may exercise supervision over other personnel in lower classifications.

Examples of Basic Task and Duties

 Operates computer console and/or peripheral equipment.  Develop programs in languages, Tools and such as COBOL, JCL, CICS, IMS and DB2.  Performs basic programming functions such as block programming; planning reports formats and layouts, and coding, compiling, testing and debugging new and/or modified programs for large-scale or high volume transactions.  Design solutions to satisfy application (business and technical) requirements.  Assist in the creation and general system design and technical specifications for new/replacement systems, taking into consideration computer equipment capacity and limitations, operating time, and desired results.  Assists in setting up equipment to perform the tasks of the data processing department.  Studies existing programs and operating procedures of the department to learn programming techniques.  Ability to work effectively within a diverse team.  Strong problem solving and analytical ability.  Ability to multi-task.  Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications

A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college in Computer Science or Information Systems with one-year experience in data processing. Must be proficient in COBOL programming.

OR

High school diploma with 6 years professional experience in coding, designing, developing and analyzing data.
